Have you experienced an IMAX movie?

I first saw IMAX at one of the Worlds Fairs in the 60s. Definitely worth checking out, at least once. Huge screen, extremely high definition picture (frame is several times the size of other formats), great sound. I don't know how much of a difference it will make for movies originally released in another format for normal theaters. But the ones shot specifically for IMAX, with IMAX equipment, are impressive.

I love IMAX it is incredible two story movie screen whats not to love.

If your lucky you will be in a city big enough to have a screen

available for regular movies. I saw the latest Harry Potter in IMAX

format and it was very cool i would have prefered Kong but I would see

most any movie in IMAX format. Let us know how you liked it!!!!

My wife and I and some of our friends saw Star Wars Episode II a couple years ago on an iMax screen. INCREDIBLE!

We sat in the farthest row from the screen and in my opinion it was the best seat in the house. The screen was so unbelievably big that you couldn't see the whole screen in your field of vision if you sat any closer.

Killer sound system too, I remember them saying it is somewhere between 12,000 and 15,000 watts.

The weird thing was they cut out about 15 minutes of the movie. I'm not sure why, but about halfway through the movie I realized that certain scenes were shortened up quite a bit from the original theatrical release.

Saw Jurrasic Park there and the dinos looked like they were the right size. The 3-D movies are usually very good, the 3-D part. If you get motion sickness then this could be a problem since the screen is so big and the picture is so life like and clear. GO!!

I think I have seen about 8 imax movies in my life at an imax theater.

Yeah there nice and big, the three dimensional one (ones with the

googles) are a little weird but cool. I remember seeing a ocean

adventure for a class trip was nice, though take off the glasses and

your going to have a headache as the picture was very blurrry and

actually double visioned. The goggles compensate and your brain

precieves three dimensions. Than another trip to see a coney island

movie. At Liberty Science Center they have a Imax Dome in which is huge

and great for pictures, saw Everest there (I would strongly suggest

just watching it even at home and it is under a hour with Leam Neason

(sp) narrating. Also I saw a airplane imax theater that made me feel

airsick for real. There all really nice and worth it, I thought the

titles I saw were going to be boring but it could be anything but with

Imax movies. I think colterphoto would best describe it with a camera

analogy. You just cannot get a medium format quality from a 35 mm.

There is only one projector. Everthing has to fit on one "reel".

Our IMAX offers tours to see the equipment (or did when it was new). If an opportunity presents itself in your location, take it. Everything is HUGE.

Why did IMAX choose 1.66:1 for screen aspect ratio?

I bought Apollo 13 at CC for $8ish and it has 2.35 version and special IMAX 1.66 version...

I plan on sitting down and watching both versions back to back...

but wonder if on my WS TV...I will get the IMAX thrill...(doubt it...unless I sit 2 feet from 61" screen...hehe)

Also what sound do they use at IMAX...?? LCR side surrounds and rear?

IMAX is the old 4:3 aspect ratio because that is approximately the human field of view. Huge screen and high definition obviates the need for wide screen. You eyeballs are filled as it is. Some of the IMAX theaters have spherical screens that literally wrap from side to side and overhead a bit.

Sound is 6 channels plus sub bass, lots of speakers, around 12,000 watts total IIRC.
