  1. I guess I've been going "back a little (lot)" lately. My cd listenings yesterday and today have been: Jean Michel Jarre's 'Equinoxe', Kitaro's 'Silk Road', Andreas Vollenweider's 'White Winds', and for a change of pace, one of my most favoured folk albums, Judy Collins' 'Fifth Album' ("Thirsty Boots" and all!!). Happy listening to all!!
  2. My newest music additions: Jazz: Oscar Peterson 'A Night in Vienna' -- a new Verve dvd (w/cd) release of a 2003 concert. Bluegrass/Country: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band 'Will The Circle Be Unbroken, Farther Along' - dvd release. Rock: Eagles 'Hell Freezes Over' - dvd - an 'oldie', but 'new' in my place! All are providing some great "looks and sounds". Cheers!!
  3. I caught repeat episodes of this early-HBO series via Showcase in the late-90's. When browsing dvd's (in downtown Vancouver, BC) the other day, I was both surprised and happy to find the series has now been released on dvd -- the complete first season - 26 (half-hour) episodes, on 3 discs. One might call the show "Twilight Zone with sex". Whatever, it's fun viewing, and sure helps to fill the time between more serious stuff, and the like. Cheers!!
  4. I see no mention of 'Ten Years After' in any of the lists posted -- Alvin Lee and group were certainly "one of the best", in my opinion. Personally, "rock & roll" to me, will always be Little Richard, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly, Bill Haley & The Comets, and all the others from the 50's -- many of whom I had the good fortune of seeing in-person once or twice. Those were the days!!! Ouch -- getting old!! Cheers!
  5. I didn't get a manual with my RF-3II's -- but did with the RC-35, and RS-3II's -- figured the lack of manual with the former was probably due to some sloppiness in the original packing (everything was boxed fine, and shiny new and all).
  6. Thanks guys -- all the prompt and great advice was much appreciated!!!
  7. It's time to replace what I'm presently using for speaker wire. I added a pair of surrounds to my system recently, and now that I have what I want, and everything is where I want it, I would like to replace the speaker wire used to initially set up. My question: I've always thought it was a given that length of speaker wire run to each speaker of a pair should be the same. With my setup, doing this results in having to deal with considerable wire 'slack' on one side of each pair of the fronts and surrounds. The longest run from a/v receiver to one of the fronts is less than 15', and to one of the surrounds about 35'. Running the same lengths to the other speaker of each pair results in conderable slack to deal with and hide, etc. Is it really necessary to run equal lengths of cord to each speaker of the pair? I plan to use 14 gauge wire. Would appreciate some advice on this. Cheers!!
  8. My still very new home-theatre setup got a real boost this week when I added a pair of RS-3II's to complement my RF-3II fronts and RC-35 centre. I'm sure happy with my choice, and more than just a bit excited with the results!! Initial 'tests' included viewing a few favourite scenes from Lord of the Rings (Fellowship of ..) and Diana Krall's Live in Paris dvd. Wow -- I knew I had been missing something, but never realized how much!! It took me awhile to choose some surrounds, but I think I did good, plus, I got a great deal to boot!! Cheers to all!!
  9. Two personal opera favourites of mine: Mascagni - Cavallaria Rusticana (Obraztsova/Domingo/Bruson) (Pretre) - Philips 416 137-2 Puccini - La Rondine (TeKanawa/Domingo) (Maazel) - CBS M2K 37852 Beautiful "goosebump-producing" music!!
  10. ........ and The Wild Bunch.
  11. Put the 'Best of John Prine' on for the "million'th" time the other day. When it comes to composing 'down to earth' lyrics, there's nobody better -- at least in my humble 'geezer' opinion!! PLEASE DON'T BURY ME, ILLEGAL SMILE, DONALD AND LYDIA, COME BACK TO US BARBARA LEWIS HARE KRISHNA BEAUREGARD, HELLO IN THERE, et al. Great stuff!! Cheers!!
  12. Thanks!! Plan to catch it tomorrow -- some happy viewing/listening ahead
  13. Had a my first taste of this concert via tv the other night -- wow, it sure looked and sounded good. A little bluegrass, folk, and country all rolled into one. I've checked and now know the dvd has been out for quite some time, and it's available locally. Suspect I'll catch a copy before the day's out. Does anyone have it? Is the a/v quality as good as it looked via the tube? Cheers!!

You can audition your equipment, and rave about how it looks and does what it's intended to do, for only so long. It's the music that counts, and one must devote time to sit down and really listen to appreciate that!! Cheers!!
  15. Thanks for the posting. I too appreciated Herbie Mann's music, and had not heard that he had passed. I did a 'search' after first reading your post, and will return to some of the sites for more info. I remember his music mostly from two 'new' periods in my life -- attending university during the 60's, and when I settled into my first (full-time) job in the early-70's. I owned several lp's of his music during those days. The first time I heard Herbie was via the radio in my very new 1961 VW 'bug', while driving out to university one Sunday afternoon. I was fixed on the music playing, but didn't know who the artist was. When I got to campus I called the radio station and was told it was Herbie Mann. I went downtown the next day and bought the album!! His music transported me away on many an occasion after that!! I don't have any of his music in my current jazz cd collection -- I think I'll rectify that soon. Thanks for bringing up some fond memories of "the man and his music". He will be missed by many.

    Used DVD's

'Amazon.ca' lists new and used prices for some of their dvd offerings. Suspect 'amazon.com' does the same, though I haven't looked. Hardly buy anything new from amazon -- wouldn't even consider used -- can beat the prices locally. Most video stores here sell new and 'previously viewed' dvds. Most a/v and other stores here sell only new products, and their prices usually beat the online retailers and video stores. Sure can't see buying used when I can get new for the same or nearly the same price.
  17. Do you have any idea of when we could expect a new (and improved = revised) version of "The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary" to be released? I'm still using a 1978 version. I've seen a newer edition (1999?), but was told by a clerk in the bookstore that it only contained one more word than the edition I was presently using, so not worth the "upgrade". Whatever, happy scrabbling!!
  18. We (lady-friend and I) enjoy Scrabble too. We play more like 'fini' though, and don't follow 'all' the rules. It's nice to turn the tv off, pop some popcorn, and get into some friendly competition!! She loves to look up a "word of the day" before we start. You've given us a few pointers for the game tonight!! Whatever, it's a stimulating game and lots of fun. Enjoy!
  19. Looks like we'll start off with an episode or two from "Cheers" (season 2) and/or "MASH" (season 5) and/or "The Honeymooners" (from the Classic 39 Episodes collection), followed by the the movie "To Live and Die in LA" or "Soylent Green". Quite a mix for this Sunday eve's viewing!!
  20. Here are three that really do it for me: The McGarrigle Hour - Kate, Anna, family and friends -- some good old fashioned singing, playing, and just wonderful harmonies. One Night With Blue Note - the historic all-star reunion concert, NY, Feb 22/85 -- some great jazz artists and their talents. Diana Krall, Live in Paris - stunning presentation and performance.

  22. What's the question? A little pertinent information of what you have and what you are trying to do, might get you some of the assistance you seek. Good luck.

Sorry if I can't explain it any better for you...I'm not technically inclined like most others here on this forum. Hope this helps. ---------------- I think your reply helped "just right". Stands are a 'must' -- they will "open" the sound and give the listener what was recorded. Cheers!!
