  1. A small line stage that seems to get great reviews is the Cary subsidary at the time, AES, DJH version, 6sn7 based. Most likely a great match for your Had Inspire. Both the standard or DJH version are reasonably priced on the used market. O even better Shu, have Dennis build what you want around the tube you favor. From speaking with him I know he sometimes uses some rather obscure tube types that he raves about. I also agree with the comment on the JM Merlin. I'd likely buy another if the opportunity presents itself. I've had a Peach and BBerry and found both too noisy for my tastes. Not so the Merlin.
  2. Sorry to thread crap but my first "real" speakers were a custom made cabinet housing JBL LE15a woofers and LE85 compression drivers. I would love to have those back, traded them for my first Klipsch, brand new LaScallas. Folks on the JBL Heritage site claimed I had lost my mind and had regressed rapidly.

    Friday Update

I see no reason a single family couldn't live comfortably in that finished home.

So in other words you are not willing to strap on body armor made of this and let one of Forum members have target practice? On you?! (Nor would I)
  7. Mike would you agree the 6sn7 might provide a more "tubey" vibe opposed to the nine pins? I've got both but quite honestly can't prove what I just asked! And with this question due you favor tube or SS rectifiers? Once again I am led to believe that an all tube system Must be tube rectified? I've got both as well and as stated can't prove or disprove either design.
  8. Do his health issues include doing duty aboard an ocean going freighter and won't be available for three months but his "agent" will handle payment etc. etc. etc. --- forget you ever saw it.
  9. Well then Thanks go out to Jay and/or Bobby!
  10. So what are the chances you had a hand in building my new '78 LaScallas?
  11. ----- I imagine Bullshitt and a slam of the door?
  12. Wouldn't twenty of these monsters constitute a Tiny House neighborhood of their own??!!
  13. I do find this "upgrade" sub-thread interesting as the only KHorns I've owned came to me with a complete Fastlane top hat, Elliptrac horn/K55 and Selenium horn/driver. So I really have no in-home baseline to compare to stock K's with possibly a freshened network. I can say the KHorns in the Hope listening room sound much different than what I am use to hearing. Now the caveat here is the Hope listening room/electronics are not the greatest. So now the comparison is even greater. So, is the Fastlane "modification" "better"? Some swear by it, some swear at it. Me, I don't know. But this I Do know - the Bonehaed does not accept the term "upgrade". Just ask - and stand back.
  14. ^^^^^ Offer them a peacemaker Martini. Shake it up good, ask them to Chill+Enjoy.
  15. ^^^^^ Agree to that also. Zero experience with a well designed HT/surround system.
  16. ^^^^^ Yep I'm finding my best results with a George Wright tube preamp set to low impedence. As compared to Nelson's own First Watt B1 buffered passive it provides more drive and additional bottom end. The Wright/ACA combo is extremely quiet but the B1/ACA is graveyard quiet. The B1 provides a softer presentation taking it to more of a tube level sound, surprisingly. Carl is right about the power supplies in that one would suffice but they are monoblocks so why not supply each amp with its own power? No different than a traditional monoblock with its own internal power supply these just happen to be separate. Glad he did it this way.
  17. -- not Dave here but yes Bob Huggins, his heart defibulater? triggered inadvertently and put his heart out of rhythm. Went on to coach the remainder of the game. Step in to correct but I think I got the story right as Huggie explained it. Was watching the game as it happened, kind of scary.
  18. Right at a week since receiving Justin's massaged Pass Amp Camp single ended Class A monoblocks with dual regulated power supplies. Safe to say that these amps perform Way above their price point and would easily compete at twice their price point. Graveyard quiet through the Big 402 horn, Class A articulate, far more bottom than 6 watts of typical solid state generally provides. Not only the simple genius of a Pass single ended design but incorporating dual power supplies which I believe put Justin's signature to these. In fact he said it required a fair amount work to find the right balance of amp and power supply for proper operation. Apparently the kit amps alone leave something on the table until proper regulated power is supplied. And they are as cute as a bug! The damn power supplies are twice their size and weight. Very little heat for Class A, easy to live with. As I have found with other Class A designs they do not put as much meat on the bone as my full bodied Dennis Had KT66 single ended nor the total lite up nature of a Wright 2a3 DHT but damn close to both, somewhere in between. A closer tilt to the 2a3 than Had's more gentle, extremely pleasant KT66, following the sonic footsteps from his years with Cary. Thanks to Justin for his assurance these are good match with my Jubes and Klipsch in general and a more than far value to sound ratio. And they play on ----
  19. ^^^^^ Agree with both the above. I didn't gather a wide array of tube amps, preamps, Class A SS to have a home theatre experience. Some do, some don't, I won't. I have little to no interest in HT while others have assembled and built monumental systems devoted to HT (Youthman). I use a great Kipsch sound bar and that is home theatre enough for me. And 1101 is spot on in that you can part together a speaker that soon becomes a speaker only, no longer within the Klipsch family. Very similar to HT - some do, some don't. I always remember the Bonehead telling us to stop calling them upgrades and call them what they are - changed or different, no longer Klipsch - but an upgrade is only in the ears of the beholder.
