  1. All the more reason for Hillary to stay away from the White House........... the office is ovoid....... no corners. Darn, huh?
  2. Low frequency sound waves will resonate through most walls and unless the condo itself is very well insulated for sound thumpy thumps will travel into the adjacent units w/o too much difficulty. You can mitigate it but not eliminate it. Then it comes down to neighbor relations and timing. In mine own experience just a single belligerent condo neighbor can ruin the enjoyment of a system period. No time is the right time. The CC&R's gives them the rights to a library quiet existence.
  3. Never seen this afore............ http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/ele/5014303375.html
  4. The subs have an auto 'on' function which when set will automatically power up the amps when they receive an input signal. If left 'on' all the time and light remains green all the time and red if not. Green = go. Red = no go.
  5. Blue Wind................ Unsure which album it was on and it is the only JB song I can name. Beck reminds me of the Pat Metheny group. Pretty much out there on their own with enough good stuff to keep a modest if loyal following.
  6. Looky here......... http://www.chonday.com/Videos/prinliufast3
  7. There are a number of approaches to managing body composition. Comes down to whatever works in a sustainable manner. Just keep in mind that at age, it becomes relevant to enter into the exercise schema cautiously. Most of us have existing medical considerations some of which really warrant close medical management. The bones, the muscles, the nerves and vessels are not young whipper-snapper vintage. I have shoulder joints devoid of cartilage for example. If you harm yourself in the process of trying to get better you lose ground instead of gaining ground. Is that new pain a simple muscle pull or or tendon strain or a pinched nerve? Everything matters. Of all the topics discussed here I'd contend that alcohol consumption is the most important. It is all empty calories and those calories go down the gullet quickly leading to at least a temporary caloric excess and that causes fat reserves to develop. One 'binge' can lead to weeks of extra effort removing that fat. Alcohol in modest moderation is the best message. Understand also that a conditioned body requires less fuel to do a simlar amount of work. If you are out of shape and move a woodpile in 10 minutes you actually burn more calories than if you did the same chore in good condition. Why? Conditioned muscles are more efficient. They require fewer calories for any given workload. In our youth we took good conditioned bodies and did tons of work and burned lots of calories. When older we may condition the body but we do less work with it (usually) so we really do not need loads of calories. Fats, sugars and alcohol - all are fast carbs, high in caloric content, that will lead to new fat stores if not used (burned) shortly after being consumed.............. and any of you with diabetes must deal with an entirely different set of rules. Getting elderly is not for the faint of heart.
  8. With this complex of a limiting medical issue you'd be better advised to approach the problem under medical management. You do not want to aggravate a spinal problem for any reason. Most MD's would kill to have a weight loss motivated patient. You understand the rigors and you have family support, all an excellent foundation for a comprehensive program. I would suggest a review of your pain management for starts. See if something local could not work as opposed to parenteral medications. If you live near a medical university they will have more extensive dietary and PT programs. Pool based exercise does sound ideal. There is good medical rationale for you to keep the weight down so funding might be possible for such treatment. If your weight plus the scoliosis is impeding the mechanics of respiration then losing the wieght becomes a medical necessity. A complete pulmonary function study will demonstrate this. Getting old sucks. I have 3 fused (and plated) vertebrae in my neck and a serious bone spur issue. Still I keep in the best condition possible.
  9. Y'all needs 2 b cautious............... dissing Texans can be dangerous. This'n has a phone number. Why not's give'm a call and see wots wot?
  10. It is a trick question right? CO2 in the atmosphere does not stay there, about 1/3 of it is absorbed by the oceans, turning into carbonic acid and lowering the ph level (more acedic) of the ocean, which is probably a greater concern since it is a major source of O2. The oceans have become 30% more acidic since the 1700s. As to who would know the answer, this guy would, he, like his father before him, studies the CO2 levels in the ocean and atmosphere. http://scrippsco2.ucsd.edu/personnel/ralph_keeling He has published papers that when you factor in carbon absorbtion by the oceans, O2 is being depleted, but not because of displacement if I recall, but because of consumption. To burn one carbon atom, takes on average, three O2 atoms. Well, I dunno any specific answer but methinx it is along these lines too. There are natural CO2 gas sinks and reservoirs and biota that does convert CO2 into other gases. There are deposits of methane in the oceans, etc. Plants thrive in high CO2 environs and commercial growers will feed closed green houses with CO2 to super charge plant growth. But it just dawned on me that the historical measures (ice samples) indicate that we're in this CO2 man made cycle. And I do not know which gas is being changed as CO2 increases nor where it goes. Do we lose it into space? The inert gases do not combine. Is it O2? N2? Is it another gaseous greenhouse gas? Does it matter??
  11. Atmospheric measures of carbon dioxide (CO2) show a steady increase at a now alarming rate. CO2 atmospheric levels are at a mean high not seen in purportedly millions of years and in direct correlation with human activity. Okay, so as the % or partial pressure of CO2 rises which atmospheric gase(s) does it displace?
  12. Very introspective....................
  13. Well......... obviously some folks like to think deeply about a variety of important subjects and seek to maturely interact with others - while some folks are just not interested, are unable to articulate and prefer topics of limited substance. I have an idea........... mebbe there could be like a thread limited to just moderators where they can preen one another and be all important? Being passive aggressive is a sign of maturity? Garbage in, garbage out.

  15. Moderation is about moderating, not limiting. The website has shut down major subjects as taboo. In this way it somewhat reminds me of how schools now conduct discipline. The finger point and a bang bang is now deemed equivalent to a machine gun and the 4th grader gets suspended. Et voila.
  16. And the members of this forum the company is marketing to - really cherishes their rights to voice dissent. In fact that is sort of an American tradition. Eh?
  17. What Klispch seems to forget is that this generation that so avidly supports their products was steeped in freedom of speech and expressed frank, diverse and strident opinions. We fought that war in Viet Nam in the jungles AND in the streets of this country. Every member here merits deeper respect than Klipsch seems willing to offer. Whether intentional or not - this petulant corralling is a bit of an affront. Yes, Klipsch has earned our loyalty with their products - but does Klipsch respect or even understand the character of this select customer base? Treating us like children at recess is not very respectful - with all due regard. Humanity grows from debate whether intellectual or confrontational. We all now know not to look for that here on these forums and Klipsch is losing some of the best of us for being so myopic. I do wonder how Paul Klipsch would feel.
  18. Clean and trim your fingernails and serve some fine cognac in large bulb goblets. Play Sinatra and Andy Williams, with some John Denver sprinkled in. Enjoy......................
  19. I have followed this thread from the start and not being a student of art history declined to join in............ but the dialogue has been most impressive. I have some news words for Scrabble and lots of grist for new nightmares. My brother made his living as a fine artist. He's good but poor acuz he refused to accommodate the desires of others. No patrons. Sold what he sold, and his tastes were not shared by enough folks. Mebbe after he dies.
  20. Anyone notice that this thread is over 10 years old? Thebes probably doesn't even remember how this event turned out let alone need any additional input. Then again mebbe it was the highlight of his twilight. One another note it is still useful information - so carry on.
  21. I run an older Marantz AVR. She's a tank and the programming functions are pretty Byzantine. But when all is said and done she sounds grand and is reliable.
  22. Many years ago at about 3 in the morning I am working ICU and a female colleague plugs a flowmeter into a high pressure O2 supply line. The adapter plugs in but the flow meter somehow dislodges from the adapter, so the line is wide open. She has this hurricane of gas spewing into the room. I watch and she panics. Hands shoved into the wall - finger in the dike - anything except the obvious, the cure. Her hair is now a furling flying mass, as though she'd ridden from Vegas to the Dakotas on a motorcycle sans helmet. Her eyes are like saucers. Still the winds are screaming. So I calmly walk around the bed, reach over her head and release the quick connect adapter, shut down the disaster and hand the adapter to her. Did not laugh nor impugn her dignity, at least not until we got out of the public earshot. Some folks are not technically astute.
  23. Teaching is becoming less attractive because systems do not allow teachers to educate. Discipline is lax. The purpose of education is diluted and the results reflect this. Teachers Unions are now PAC's with specific agendas purported to engender better education but often result in enhanced teachers benefits w/o improvement in education. In every community there is the annual, "it's for the kids" campaign to pass whatever supplemental tax or levy. We agree that the system is broken but I doubt if we agree on why nor who should be responsible to fix it. Parental involvement in education has always been a factor but now it is somehow the failure - not the systems. Why did it work before and not now? As I said previously, the educational system should not strive to be a social support network but an educational system. If Johnny misbehaves then little Johnny is not part of the class - period. Teach the kids who do perform. Raise the bar, do not lower the bar so everyone gets a trophy diploma. Because those are pretty much useless.
  24. Maynard......... Appreciate the response and your very circumspect approach to parenting your own children. But there is another and perhaps bigger issue here and it is the character of the community and what it accepts as behavioral norms. The girls whose parents failed them were being victimized (I think we agree). The boys victimizing those girls needed something between serious discipline and profound counseling. They all grew into young adults with some very unsavory baggage and who knows how well each of them dealt with it. As for the schools they do have expulsion and they can remove transportation privileges. That was one clear occasion where action was 100% required on everyones part. I can not believe that any parent informed of what those kids were doing would not be deeply grateful for it being brought to their attention. Outrageous behavior is an outrage and it is during those formative years that behavioral boundaries need to be established. Help the schools do this by reporting outrageous behavior. I will not guarantee that anything will be done - but the responsible parent does need to do their part IMHO.
