  1. I am not really qualified on K Horn needs but a few things I could comment on. 1. Mobile knows tubes 2. 20 feet is too far away 3. Pioneer DVD player is good for movies; but you could find a better source component(or DAC) for CDs costing less than a tube amp endeavor. You have a great foundation of a system. Enjoy the tweaking. Rick
  2. Wes, One day I shall chase your direction in tubes! Too many kids to put through college. I really like reading your posts. If you hear of any beat up Hereseys or KLF 20s that need a home to resussitate them on the west side; let me know. Rick
  3. If the HT is your focus... the RC7 is totally different performance level from the RC3. I have a large room width wise but the couch is only 10 feet from the center channel; I use the RC3. If you have a larger distance or will move the distance back and get a front projector in the future the RC7 would be a good investment. If you listen to allot of music here are a few thoughts that may enhance listening more than a center rear speaker for around the price of the RC7... -2 channel separate power amp for the main speakers -Rega or Rotel CD player -MSB Link or Musical Fidelity upsampling DAC Welcome to the forum! Rick
  4. I have learned many a lesson...one I stick with is when in doubt stick with Ray! My RB5s were almost painful during the first 20 hours of service. After 25 years of listening I do not think I could have "gotten used to the new sound" in 20 hours. I did most of the break in time all night for 2 weeks when I was not listening.
  5. new rb5 & nice stands rf3 & nice cables if you have the time to go for vintage used(I do not due to busines travel and family obligations) KLF20 or LaScalas I am taking next Thursday off to cruise garage sales in rich older neiborhoods to see if I can find some older Klipsch speakers.
  6. Speaker wire... I bought a close out pair of Audio Quest(AQ) Type 6+ a few years ago from Audio Advisor mail order. It was a 10 foot pair with spades on the speaker end and bananas on the amp end. After spending a year with my RB5s with a normal wire configuration and getting a Sherwood Newcastle power amp I decided to biwire. I used the Type 6+ for the highs and Rat Shack 12 gauge for the lows. That was a pretty good tweak, it seemed to firm up the midbass most and improve soundstage as I recall but had no detrimental effect. I was trying to find a deal on a demo or close out of an AQ internal biwire cable with factory terminations for several months, did not find a good option. So I just removed the Rat Shack cable, clipped off the spades from the Type 6+, stripped the ends, twisted wire and went internal biwire. I am currently listening to the DACs in the Panny RP91 on a Chesky Super Audio Collection of music recorded at 96/24 featuring Sara K. and Livingston Taylor through the 6 channel direct input of the preamp. A very cool version of "Brick House" by Sara K. The new wire configuration seems to allow for more details. -guitar string and fret interaction -singers breath over the microphone diaphram I paid right around $ 100 for the AQ Type 6+ which was on the Stereophile recommedned list a few years back I think. For $100 I got 3 levels of tweaking to play with for the last few years so I am very satisfied. I am also considering buying the WBT crimping tool and putting on a higher quality of connector, but the WBT tool is quite expensive.
  7. I listned to the pre "2000" Rega and the top of the line Rotel CD player and liked both. Since none of those were able to be found used I grabbed the MSB Link II DAC for $ 260 as a demo. It seemed to get me 85% + of the quality of the Rega. Good job Mike; I would have definitely picked up a used Rega fro under $ 400 if availiable.
  8. Biwire with AQ or Kimber low end cable. Get them internal biwire from the mfg; I think it defines the bas better with my RB5s.
  9. I have not thought of the DQ-10 for a long time. I shared a house off Campus at Michigan State University with a guy that had a pair in 1980 as I remember. DQ-10 Bryston power Phillips turntable I had only heard Heresyes to that point in time. Not alot of slam but the DQ-10 had the best soundstage I had heard a speaker acheive in 1980.
  10. Fellas, Hero worship of the Audi? For that kinda money a Detroit boy would get a Mustang GT. I smoked many a Porche in my GT back in the 80s; but I guess American cas are too droll in the current day. The Germans need your dollars to bolster the EURO anyway.
  11. Why do you say these things? They are all different if you look at the specs RC3 has smaller woofer and no vent as I recall. Could you be more objective in the question
  12. You must be the kid who moved to Kentucky in the 3rd grade that beat me at the spelling bee. Happy 6901 to you.
  13. Adire Audio "RAVA" $ 399 plus shipping www.adireaudio.com
  14. I have been blessed as a boy many years ago(20+) to hear real guitars played by good players in family rooms and garages for perhaps 2000 to 3000 hours or more from the age of 15-22. unamplified... Martin Guild Gibson amplified... 1950s Les Paul through Music Man Stratocaster through Marshall 1970s Les Paul through Fender Twin Reverb Thes are some I remember most impressive. Horns make recorded guitars more real for me. Narada is a small CD music company that has several guitar samplers of flamenco type music that are highly recommended. It aint rock and roll but it is great playing. Stay Horny...
  15. Rotel is definitely top notch; but pricey at times. I hear good things about NAD; Stereophile just rated their new higher power integrated very nice for the money. $ 800 list I beleive. Parasound is also worth listening too.
  16. No executive washroom yet. But there is an ice maker in the fridge in the Crazy Poster lounge.
  17. I got the following in March: 1. Toshiba 36 inch HDTV $1800 2. Panasonic RP91 Progressive Scan DVD DVD-A player $ 460 3. Dish Network HDTV tuner for SAT and terrestrial signals $ too much(600), but if you are an early adopter you have to throw caution to the wind sometimes. HDTV terrestrial PBS is AWESOME! DVD via component cables...excellent Super Bit DVD of Dracula and Desperado very close to HD Discovery channel HDTV feed on "Praying Mantis" too cool Definitely if you get HDTV; get a progressive scan DVD player; not enough HDTV programming yet.
  18. I like the "Last of the Mohicans" soundtrack for testing. Allot of people like the "1812 Overture".
  19. Better off unplugging the cables and hooking up the other unit. Maybe a cheap phono stage from Rat Shack.
  20. First thing i did when i got in the rental car in Dallas yesterday was to set the tone controls to flat. And then "Back in Black" by AC/DC came on; not my normal fare but it sounded cool in the Mercury Grand Marquis. "Tone" sounds like a friendly term. It should be called "psycotic gain and distortion enhancer". There should be a nastier word for "klipping" as well; kind of an audio train wreck waiting to happen. Ray C., If you really have to be louder than the Belles(maybe poor for your hearing in the long term); an industrial model of speaker may be better or your needs. I have been there, doing sound for rock bands 20 years ago. I have adjusted my style to listen for fine details at moderate levels. Good Luck, Rick
  21. Almost as fun of a subject as interconnects and speaker cable. I have never had the time to audition the Richard Gray or PS Audio stuff. One person who has spent alot of time building Mega buck systems for rich people tried alot of AC conditioners and decided to use Panamax and Furman(?) as I remember. The guys said some of the real expensive stuff "cleaned" well but seemed to add a commpessed element to the music when used on power amps. My bang for the buck is to make your own power cables from 10 gauge industrial cable. I seemed to get better tranients and more SPL with the same preamp gain I used to use. Sometimes robust looking extension cords only have 14 gauge wire; since I started to cut them apart to see the wire, I started making my own.
  22. Why would you want to do that sustitution?

    Thank-you

What are you using for cables? HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE
