  1. I don't have a lot of experience with tubes first hand, but a pair of 30's I listened to hooked up to some Cornwall's, may be the some of the best Jazz reproduction that I have ever heard.

    Pork Rib rub

Cover it with mustard, then apply the rub. This has a very unique flavor for rub Another from amazing ribs.com . Course. Sauces and Condiments. Cuisine. American. Makes. About 3 cups. At about 2 tablespoons per slab of ribs, this is enough for 24 slabs. Store the extra in a zipper bag or a glass jar with a tight lid. Use enough to cover the meat surface but still let some meat show through. Takes. 15 minutes. 10 minutes to find everything and 5 minutes to dump them together. Ingredients 3/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar 3/4 cup white sugar 1/2 cup American paprika 1/4 cup garlic powder 2 tablespoons ground black pepper 2 tablespoons ground ginger powder 2 tablespoons onion powder 2 teaspoons rosemary powder
  4. Muskin REV 2 PC133 was the oldest sticks I had. (Just found where I sold them on EBAY many, many moons ago) I still have other versions in two other towers I have in storage, but I cant remember what they are.
  5. You could fund a heck of a DJ setup by selling the MC-30's alone.
  6. Lord, I cant remember. I can remember running 133 RAM at 150+. I may even still have a few sticks somewhere. I also remember going through quite a few hard drives over a few years as a result. Had a good time building a few setups that basically skunked most of the online guys playing the old school format of the Quake game. That and having a cable modem setup in the late 90's made the other players deem you as a bot. Those were good times back then.
  7. The Mushkin RAM takes me back to the over clocking days a couple of decades ago. Very good stuff
  8. That has to be the prettiest set I have ever seen. The Aus Walnut is the perfect touch of exotic, but not too crazy. Love the color too.
  9. Nice find. A lot of good selling points on why people should be buying acoustic panels instead of worrying about other variables not as important. Engineer: "Echo's interfere with measurements." Tuba player says: " I could finally hear the details for once." Cimbal crash could be heard decaying down to the minute level. Engineer: "The weight is lifted from your ears." Great explanations on the rewards of room treatment and showing how most will never hear the difference in components, recordings or mods until they start treating their room.
  10. Just how many speakers companies have survived for over 70 years?
  11. Im not sure about a PRE vs AVR used as a Pre, but I will give my honest opinion once I get one. Its like the last missing link in my setup and I have gone this far, so no backing up now. My room is pretty dead with panels, so Im hoping the better numbers will prevail.
  12. Even dated refurbs look expensive to me. Used units are scary in my book. Seen too many sitting on carpeted floors, or a drip or two from a cup sitting on a unit gets on a board, next thing you know you have a hot spot on the board that will rear its head a year or so later with a dead diode, resistor or cap. Heck even the new units are a crap shoot anymore.
  13. I have always liked NAD. Anthem is another that is glossed over, yet we have to consider pricing for all these too.
  14. Well the Denon has a rated THD of .05% @ its rated power output and my amp is .005% THD @ rated and Im guessing its well under that at the low levels I play. The SNR of my amp is 113db and Im not sure where the actual noise floor is when incorporating its power source on the Denon, but its not close to it. The pre side on the Denon isn't bad at all, but gaining a few DB on the noise floor will be something I welcome to aide in the blackness.
  15. Actually I have a McIntosh 7205 setup for multi channel, but Im a two channel listener 99% of the time. Even then, my multi channel use is for DVDA's and Bluray Audio now and again. I guess my post was misleading when I said buy a "matching Pre." I really don't need to spend the money and Im holding off as long as I can until at least the wife has had enough of this dated Sony AVR and its antics that happened to be in a rack when we purchased this home. I have looked at several older multi channel Pre's, but with all the HDR and Dolby Vision and all the other new gadget garb, Im a little hesitant to not buy something I may need further down the road. Having said that, I don't see my interest of Home Theater setups increasing in time, a 5.1 set up is all I need. Hard for me to sit still for a full movie and no way you catch me at a Theater, but I can waste hours out in my shop somehow DACs are definitely different. I flop back and fourth from my AVR to my MAC mini just to keep me guessing
  16. Agreed. Im in the market for a dedicated Marantz Pre/pro as I need the old Denon 4311 for a downstairs ceiling speaker setup. I figure it would make more sense to get a pre to match with my amp as opposed to buying another AVR. Of course the new Marantz Pre's have better numbers, DACs and what not, but I have been listening to my combo for a while. You get accustomed to things after a while and even though something may be better on paper, your ears may not agree.
  17. I own a 4311 and have for 8 or 10 years. The upper end of Denon is very good IMO and they bench very well. In most cases they best other AVR's when it comes to the multi channel bench power output as well as great noise floor numbers. But to say it sounds better or even as good using it as an AVR than using it as a PRE/PRO for my outboard amp has not been my result and Im basically a 1 watt listener. Maybe my amp is adding color or maybe, just maybe, its offering a cleaner sound like its specs note.

    Eye Opener

Much is the same for a lot of people that look like they have money. You get a raise, new job, etc. Here comes the bigger house, newer 4x4 truck, private school maybe for one or two, next thing you know you're back where you started, just strapped at a different level. About the only thing that can save the day is a healthy term life policy.
  19. If Im not mistaken, the battery is in the keypad which simply unlocks and pops off like the top of a smoke detector and has a wire that feeds into the safe. I would make sure this wire connection is good and doesn't have a dropped pin on a plug or anything. A few blows to the front is the next step to see if the solenoid is frozen. Just put a 2x4 on the front and hit on it. What is there to lose at this point? I think a lawyer's letter stating "company known flaw or defective keypad" might get your son a new safe.
  20. Anything truly below my enclosed K-Horns capability comes in the form of driver movement or flutter and the speed of it has to do with what Fr or cycle we're talking about. That's all I hear in subsonic range on my K's. I didn't bother kicking my sub on for the "Birds" track as I assumed we were talking about a 100ish hz "thump" that Kink56 had mentioned. I didn't turn it up and rattle the walls, I played it at a conversation level sitting about 12-14' off. I could hear it immediately and as I moved closer it got much worse. I put my ear closer to the side vent and it was a really bad buzz like the guitar body was doing the resonating or someone wasn't fretting hard enough with their fingers causing the buzz. Could have been a hot channel, could have been the mixing trying to keep up with her delicate, yet very pronounced voice after the fact. It is plainly on the track and obviously a bass horn is magnifying it. This is my interpretation, but I didn't use enough power to cause any resonance in my bass cab. I guess I could play it through my LaScala rears, but I'm pretty sure its going to be a very similar result with the audible difference being the length of the bass horn. The Bass horn is simply magnifying what its being fed. The only rasp or resonance I have heard takes quite a few watts to really rear its head on my old single wall Indy LS's which were my mains for around 15 years. Like mentioned before, its pretty telling that a DR cab is not producing or should I say, "revealing this." The K's have a hump, the LS's have a hump, The Belles have a hump and I believe the Jubilee bass cab has its short comings that have to be dealt with as well. Highly efficient Horn bass cabs are going to have these issues to deal with, but they're still the cleanest, most efficient, lowest THD setup you can build or own.
  21. No its there. I don't know if they recorded with a pickup in the acoustic or used a mic, but his hammer on with A7 I think is very harmonic as well as much more of his or her finger work in the song. That guitar could very well have a nasty resonation. The Tune finishes out much better than its starts. As far as the Belle and the LS, theyre really not full range speakers in sorts IMO. The LaScala was built straight up for P.A. action, or at least that the last story I heard. The Belle is a spruced up version with a shorter cab and shorter and more narrow mid horn for easier placement. But if you can get over their shortcomings, the rest cant be touched by a lot of the very costly cream that is out there. The Belle is better in a deeper room with its smaller mid horn, but the LaScala gets the full enchilada with the K-400 or 401. Two LaScalas and a sub will trounce 90+% of the garb on the market. What I listen to just cant be reproduced to my ears correctly without involving a horn. The cycle response humps you mention that are actually in the K and the LS's and B's are there for a reason. I know someone really smart didn't want them there, but to gain on one side you have to subtract from the other and Im pretty sure he made the most sensible decision where he had to.
  22. Ok, I hear it and its awful. Geez, the vocals were clean and almost wet sounding, but that thump was horrid. Never heard a buzz like that in any content before. Its interesting its not as pronounced in a non horn loaded bass cab. At least we know the horn loaded bass cabs are reproducing what is coming through. I didn't put enough power through it to say my cab was actually resonating, just reproducing what was there. I think thats pretty unique. I hear read flutter from Stan Getz, Coltrane, etc especially from the old recordings. That's something funky, whether mixing, drop tuned guitar or dropped and plucking the string, something is a miss there.
  23. How much power does it take to produce the resonance? Im going to listen to "Birds" in a bit on my K's and tell if I can hear what you are hearing.
