  1. Someone here needs to strike a deal with the seller (NOT at $1.2K) and put them out of their misery. You could probably part them out (sans cabinet) for $800 to $1K.
  2. Well... Nobody ever claimed that Klipsch fans were the sharpest tools in the shed. I know I'm not. I just know that my ears like what they hear coming out of a pair of Klipsch speakers.
  3. PM me your location (zip code) and I'll calculate the fuel cost to drive up there. If I can swing it $$ wise it might just turn in to a road trip.
  4. It bothers me too but you can rest assured that I'll remedy that situation just as soon as I can. I've owned Belles, La Scalas, Heresys (several pairs), Forte's (I & II), Chorus IIs, Cornwalls (I & II), RF-3 IIs, RB-10s, and built a killer pair of Cornscallas. If I had the room and didn't need the coin they'd all still be here. Loved em all I did for sure.
  5. Really guys. I appreciate the effort and the $$ but there is no need at all. I have plenty of speakers around here. I'm not being deprived of music in any way shape or form.
  6. That's certainly a fantastic offer and I do appreciate it. Unfortunately right now I can't afford to pay the shipping. I've been out of work for a while now and I'm watching every penny like a hawk. HMMM... What do you think it would be to ship them to 33827? Maybe I could sell some blood plasma or something.
  7. Well it's shaping up to be a total write off. The homeowners can't do anything because my name does not appear on the rental contract. The unit was rented by my friend he let me put my stuff in there as a favor. Of course he didn't buy any additional insurance at the time of the rental. The facility does have video surveillance but it runs through a HD based DVR and only has the last 7 days of video available. It's probably been 4 or 5 months since I was last there. The detective I talked to this morning wasn't very encouraging. He told me that the PD had "a number" of content theft cases from that facility. It's in a "not so nice" end of town. I did find the owner's name. He's from out of state and owns quite a few of these storage facilities. I have a call in to his office but haven't heard back yet. The woman I talked to said that the owner really doesn't get involved with any of the properties. Everything is left up to the local manager. I read through part of the rental contract this morning and yes the property bears no responsibility whatsoever for any loss due to theft of contents. I called a former coworker who is an attorney and asked him if I had any chance in small claims court. Between the fact that my name isn't on the original rental contract and the contract's loss disclaimer pretty much none. I think his exact words were "not a prayer". If there's any consolation at all it's that none of the electronics worked very well. They all needed service of one kind or another. The Heresys were real beaters that I was planning to refinish as soon as I could afford to. And best of all is that I really didn't have a lot of money tied up in the whole pile.
  8. Bill, Thank you very much for the offer but I'm already deeply indebted to you and I'd prefer to not go any further in debt. There is no lack of speakers here. Currently there's an old pair of Maggies singing in my living room. Not Kliptch but not bad either. I'm more pissed off about the theft and the managements "oh well" attitude than anything else.
  9. I don't know. I'm assuming that that's the local PO's job to investigate. Right now I'm trying to track down the owner so he and I can have a couple of four letter word laced conversation with. I find it 100% unacceptable that I pay rent and expect a level of security only to be stolen from. Also unnacceptable is the manager's attitude of "oh well". When I track down who owns this facility he's going to get an earfull.
  10. The worst part is that this leaves me Klipsch-less for the first time in a lot of years. I'm not without speakers to listen to. I currently have a pair of Maggies in the living room but I would prefer a pair of Klipsch. The Maggies are nice but my ears are acoustomed to and appreciate the Klipsch sound. I just don't have the extra coin righ now to be shopping for a new (pre-loved) pair of speaker so I guess I'll be listening to my SMG-As for a while. I could have much worse problems.
  11. I sold my RF-3 IIs this week so I decided to get one of my pairs of beater Heresys out of storage. I split the rent on a climate controlled 5' x 10' with a friend of mine. I get there this morning and as I go to unlock the padlock I notice that the shackle has been cut. From the looks of the cut it was done with a pair of bolt cutters. It would have had to been a big @$$ bolt cutter because the lock was pretty substantial. Gone was 2 pairs of Heresys, a Marantz 2270 receiver, a Marantz 2325 receiver, a Sony 3-head cassette deck and a Teac R2R deck. The rest of what I had in there looked like it had been gone through but nothing else taken. I called my friend and told him what happened and he came down to see what of his had been taken. He lost a TV, a couple of guns and some other electronic pieces. We went to the manager to ask if there was any kind of insurance or other recourse. Of course we were told "it happens... sorry about your luck". He told us that we could call the police but it probably would matter even if they did bother to show up. On the way out we walked down the row of storage units and almost all of the locks had been cut. We went back to the office and reported that to the manager and suggested he contact the people renting them. He just shrugged and said "it's not my problem". @$$HAT! My friend and I pulled the remainder of our stuff out of the unit and told the manager to kiss our lilly white @$$es as there would be no further rent forthcoming. CRUD!!! I think I'll start drinking early today.
  12. There is a bridge like that in the next town over from me. It caught a truck about once a week for years until the city finally banned truck traffic on that street.

Texas Red batch number two is under way. I changed up the recipe a little bit. I bought the same low fat (7% fat) ground beef but rather than stew meat I got a London Broil and carved it up in to small pieces. It's on sale this week and was cheaper than stew meat. I thought that using the stew meat even after 8 hours in the slow cooker left a few pieces that were a bit on the "chewy" side. Hopefully the London Broil will result in a falls apart tenderness. What's surprising me is that this batch is considerably hotter than the last batch. I don't know why. I used the same ingredients spice wise in the same proportions. HMMM... I thought the last batch could have stood a little more "zing" and considered adding a few chilpotle peppers (roasted jalapenos) and adobo sauce to kick it up a bit. I'm now glad I didn't do that. Had I it would have been uneatable. Even for me. And I like really hot foods. To a point. The "intake" end of my digestive tract really likes hot foods although the ouput end doesn't share that opinion. The next couple of days are probably not a good time to hang out at my house. Unless of course you have no sense of smell, like good Chili, and enjoy a glass or two of a decent IPA. Two hours in and under way: Six or eight hours to go.
  14. Doesn't surprise me in the least. I applaud McIntosh for being "forward thinking" enough to realize that digital is the direction that many are moving in. Let's face it kids the "digital" formats are getting better and better all the time. The 24/96 albums being distributed by HDTracks and others are quite good sounding if you have the proper reproduction equipment. There's also something to be said for convenience. 90% or more of my listening is casual as in background noise. For this digital reproduction is ideal. I can set my HTPC to shuffle the 6000 or so songs it has stored on the hard drive and it's like a radio station of my favorites without the DJs and commercials. I have a strong hunch that I'm not the only one. Yes, there are times when I break out an album on vinyl and plunk my happy @$$ in front of the stereo for as long as it takes before I have to flip it over. But I have to admit that those times are becoming less and less often. Not long ago I did a comparison of the same album in CD, SACD, 180 gram vinyl, and 24/96 FLACs. The SACD smoked the CD sonically. The 24/96 FLACs smoked the SACD sonically. What surprised me was that the vinyl didn't sound enough better (to me) to justify the hassle. Perhaps if I had much better hardware (I'm pretty low end these days) and much better hearing (I'm old) I could justify the expense of a top of the line analog system.
  15. If the local authorities tell you to evacuate just do it. Grab your cherished stuff, load it in the car and GO. There ain't nothing you own that's worth losing your life over. Trust me... I know... I took 3 direct hits here in 2004. In retrospect I should have gathered up my $h!t and bugged out.

As a rule I make a double batch when I'm cooking Chili. That's a good thing. A couple of hours in, about the time the house begins to start smelling really good I start tasting. I don't "taste" with a spoon but with a small bowl full. I figure that by the time the cooking is finished I've "tasted" about half of the batch. No matter... My tummy is full and I sleep well that night. I've found that Chili is always better the second day after resting for a while. You've inspired me to cook up another batch. It ain't cheap to make at all and I don't have a lot of $$ to spend but I think I'm going to go for it. I can put it on the AmEx card and worry about how to pay it off next month.
  17. I did pretty much everything you're describing to a pair of beater La Scalas. Here's the thread about the project: http://community.klipsch.com/forums/p/125734/1270959.aspx#1270959 It was a lot of work to be sure but once finished they looked great. Here's the finished product:

Looking good! I did my first batch of the year back on page 33 of this thread. It was a new recipe for me and turned out really REALLY well. I ate the very last of it last Saturday. I freeze it in small (2 bowls) containers then thaw it out when I get the urge for Chili.
  19. I don't recall the phono input being "noisy" just dull and lifeless. It also doesn't have enough gain. Where a CD or FM would be at 39-40 on the receiver to be a decent listening level I'd have to go to 50 or more to get the same volume level. Truth be told I just need to sell my turntable and albums to someone who will appreciate them. I can't remember the last time I played one of them.
  20. I've had my Onkyo TX-8050 for several months now and give it my highest recommendation. I'm piping my PC in by way of optical, my TV by optical, and my DVD/CD by coaxial. They all sound great coming out of a pair of RF-3 IIs and a small subwoofer. I don't know what DAC chips that Onkyo used in the 8050 but they sound good to my ears. For Pandora I tend to use my HTPC rather than the internal connection. I think the HTPC sounds better. I've read that if you're a paid subscriber to Pandora (I am) you get a higher bit rate feed but only when using a PC. I've played MP3s and FLACs off of a USB flash drive and streamed music from my PC by way of the DLNA interface on the 8050. It really is a good fairly inexpensive way to integrate all of your digital content in to a nice 2.1 channel system. A couple of minor caveats though... (1) The DLNA interface is a little "cludgy" in my opinion and takes a lot of steps to drill down to a particular album or song. (2) If you want to use the "Zone-2" function it only passes analog sources. (3) The phono input isn't very good. If you're planning to add a turntable at some point I'd look elsewhere.
  21. I bought a middle of the line GE high efficiency top loader last summer and I've been very pleased with it. I read a good bit about the HE washers before purchasing. After reading about the maintenance requirements of the front loaders I decided they weren't for me. I'm single and live alone. I'll often go 2 weeks or more without running a load fo laundry. The idea of water sitting for that long didn't thrill me. Besides I'm lazy.
  22. Same problem with Opera. I've tried them all across Win7 and Linux platforms and the only 2 that get it right are IE and Firefox.
  23. A little something for the Battlestar Galactica fans... [] Marginally NSFW
