Have you thought about staying 3-way and moving the tweeter higher?

I have a pretty nice backyard/garage/tail gating setup now - ksw-115s and klipsch HI's. I only have the HIPs hooked up right now and I was wondering on what people would recommend for connecting the two together (the 115s have a built-in crossover - I just set them up last weekend so haven't had a lot of time to play with them yet).

I've seen diagrams of the la scala horn where the mouth has a flare, then straight (the space along the back wall), then the flare. If you angled the back wall and then angled the side out, how much more low end could you get?

I lost track of this thread a couple of months ago and looked it back up after a LaScala bass bin question. I have a couple of 500Hz tractrix horns that I have a 2" driver for. Then a 2404 tweeter. Thinking about a esn5800 with AP12-500 crossover setup. Right now I'm trying to decide on another La Scala bottom, dBB or maybe even a Jamboree plan (the woodworking on the last may be too challenging for me at this point).

Trying to work out a deal on a B&K 7-channel right now. We'll see how it goes. jhoak - where is your center? Is it on the shelf above the screen?

I'm thinking about getting a 7-channel amp for a basement home theater and was wondering if any of you had recommendations? I've started looking at Outlaw Audio 7700, B&K 200.7 and maybe an Emotiva 5-channel with one of my two channels powering maybe the rears? Right now the plan is cornwall fronts, academy, forte rears with an SW-15 sub. I'm probably 50/50 music/movies and will (someday) do some sort of JBL-based cornscala mains.

Wow - I just bought a General contractor saw. I don't have the space or 220, but if I did? Do you have dust collection too?

If your cutoff is below where you can tell where the sound is coming from, then two subs is just about volume. I would probably try some sort of stereo setup above 80hz and just put the subs together in a corner (even if stereo) below 50hz.

I haven't convinced myself that I would be able to hear the difference, but firewire is supposed to be better for music than USB2 (I'd have to look it up again, but I think that firewire has a better clocking scheme). Since you already have a mac mini it may be worth it to look into DACs that take firewire directly or just enjoy your system until USB3 comes out. I currently have a ps audio and run both a CD player and an iTransport into it and am very happy with it.

I measure the mid horn as 16 7/8" by 5 5/8" with the space between the top edge of the doghouse and the bottom of the horn opening as 1 5/8".

Great system! What are you using for preamp, blu-ray, etc?

I'll have to look through some bookmarked pages to find that. I thought that the 1/10th number was based on dispersion rather than distortion though... This is from memory and a couple of months ago, so I could be wrong. Thanks for the author names. I'll have to do some researching and buy a couple of books.

Mike, I've been reading a lot on horn theory and design to try and plan a diy project. One site I found said that for the high frequency cutoff of a horn - that the horn would start to beam at a wavelength 1/10th of the length of the horn. The other rules of thumb were that the cutoff of a tractrix horn should be ~2/3 the frequency of your crossover and a horn should only be designed to handle 3-4 octaves. Gothover's latest project looks like it is flat for over 4 octaves, so maybe this is too limitting. Any comments on the above? Are there better references than what I'm finding on the web? Thanks!

How would a horn like this compare to an avantgarde uno? The frequency range of the uno mid is 220-3500hz...

That woofer was in the pair of La Scala's I refurbished. A lot of sanding and some gluing plywood back together.

Did I read that right, 950 EUR? That's $1136 if I google the exchange rate.

Any recommendations on amps to be run off of batteries (that are in current production)? We'll be running a pair of kp-250s, possibly kp-115's also.

I think I paid $2250 for a used setup. They definitely keep up with a pair of La Scalas, so if you can swing it - I would recommend them.

I've been reading some woodworking articles and thinking that if you had a vacuum press and a form - you could make shaped horns. I'll probably get there eventually (would like to make a tractrix mid-bass). Have you heard of the Stereo Lab horns?

Woofers - $220 re-cap - $100 cloth - $30 ---------------- $350 It seems like La Scalas in decent shape are going for ~$800 right now, so I'd say $450-500?

Thanks for the advice. I bought an Ashly xr1001 off of ebay and have to save up a little bit for the ALK extreme slopes.

For me - tweeters smoothed out the highs, replacing the crossover made the mids a little more clear (most noticeable on percussion coming out of the mid). What do you want to improve the most?

If you already have the horns and the drivers, why not just experiment with the two combinations sitting on top of the Belles? Do you like the sound of the JBL's better than the GPA's? They both seem to be the right frequency range and if you read Al's comments about 1" vs 2" horns - they both seem like great options. BTW - I saw your post "Newest Project" - just a really nice build...

I have a birch pair that spent most of their life in a bar (the Grizzly Rose or something). Spend most of Labor day weekend sanding, filling gaps and re-gluing plywood tear out. I could send you a couple of photos if you want to see what the black looks like. I think that they came out pretty nice...
