  1. BobG and others at Klipsch have been more than tollerant of me and my antics. Mind you this is even after I bought my speaks from a non-dealer. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit

  3. Wow! Going from a C-15 to a C-2200 is a pretty big jump! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-11-2002 at 05:00 PM
  4. This post is definitely not a question but a commemoration to a very special man in my life. As I sit in my easy chair watching the documentary special on CBS of the tragedies that changed our total outlook on life and the bravery of Firefighters everywhere, well, this just has to be said. In 1962 my father was looking for a career to support his, then, four children all under five years of age. He found a posting that the Cincinnati Fire Department was taking applications for recruits. After Fire College his second assignment was Ladder 2, Truck 29 at the corner of Liberty and Linn Sts. Not too long after that he made the rank of ATO, Arial Truck Operator and so far was respected for his common sense approach to the profession. September 1965 I came into the world clueless of the scope and importance of the job he does. All I knew was that dad would come home some nights from work and sometimes he wouldnt. Twenty-four hours on duty, forty-eight hours off. In the off time he usually went to a second job as a butcher for a local grocery chain to keep us fed. I remember vividly of the nights he came home from the firehouse smelling of smoke. I would hop up from the living room floor from watching Sesame Street and run to meet him at the front door before it had even closed behind him. I would sit on his tired foot and wrap my arms and legs around his leg up to the knee and hold on for a long hug not letting go as he walked with a Western style movie limp to the kitchen to see mom and to put down his gear. At dinner he never left anything on his plate. We didnt need a dog for any leftovers; we just gave it to dad. Both my parents had one of those jobs where planned days off around holidays just didnt happen. Not one year went past when both mom and dad were home for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Needless to say we celebrated Christmas a lot on Christmas Eve. In 1975 all the families from the firefighters of shift two decided something different. If they could not be home with their families, let the families come to them. That Christmas day eve mom piled all five of us kids in the station wagon and went to daddys work. There were tables set up between the pumper and ladder trucks. The food started coming from the kitchen to each table along with dad adorning the familiar apron that he wore at home when he cooked for us. This was really good chow till a call came into the station. Over the loudspeaker came Truck 29, Ladder 2, Rescue 24Box 3217 West Eighth and Glenway---a structure fire.. The man in the joker room would give the response to the fire tower. The crew ran to get their gear on and pull us kids that were climbing on the trucks off so they could leave. The trucks roared out with the stench of hydrocarbons as it made every bite of Christmas dinner taste the same, but I didnt care, I got to see daddy at work. Since then he has been decorated with Fireman of the Year.twice. About 1979 he came home excited about the Fire Museum getting a new location. The old firehouse at 315 West Court Street. The very first firehouse that housed the nation's first paid firefighters. It needed a lot of work and was being funded with donations. Dad just loves to fix things. I honestly think we moved the last two times because there was nothing left to be fixed in the house we were in. He was in hog heaven now. Five years later I started a part-time moonlight job at that museum. That job lasted sixteen years for me. Though now retired since 1992, Dad is still volunteering his time to that museum scrounging materials, changing light bulbs, running new electric and fixing water leaks. And as alwaysloving every minute of it. Robert J. Blasing Badge #517 Dates of service: 1962-1992 Thanks dad. http://www.cincyfiremuseum.com/ ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-13-2002 at 02:39 PM
  5. --I read in Dave Funks Tube Amp Workbook that a fellow named Ernst Werner who was working for Seimans invented the moving coil speaker in 1877. There was a problem with it though, no amp to power it with.In 1906 Lee DeCamp invented the triode tube making amplification possible. He later went on to work with RCA.On and on, then came along Leo Fender and it all started sounding right.-- Taken from a search on askjeaves.com ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-08-2002 at 11:13 AM
  6. I dunno...Compaq might be a tough place to get into. Just this morning I heard on the radio that the merger between HP and Compaq just got approval from the government. With that who knows what jobs/things are gonna get cut out. Good luck though. Now if you have any notion about being a court reporter...the hours are long and fast paced. The money is good once you get the better credidations but since you would be considered self-employed the taxes are astronomical. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-07-2002 at 04:48 PM

  8. Manual- As you turn up/down the main volume control on the main amp/pre/receiver the volume of the sub will increase/decrease along with it. You won't physically see the sub's level control move but the output will change accordingly. No need to recalibrate every time you change the volume setting. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-07-2002 at 03:42 PM
  9. Using EQ's can be beneficial but it is extremely easy to let it get out of hand. Not all of us that use them are so infantile as to use it as a 60's anti-war political slogan as some people suggest. Are my speakers flat in response? Yes. Is the room flat that the system is in? Nope. About 1 to 2db bass boost in a few well analyzed frequency ranges is all it needs. Your speakers should need nothing in the HF ranges. With the speakers being as sensitive as they are it would not need much of anything. To go too far would clip the amp and start blowing drivers, tweeters first probably. I'm using a dbx 1231 and it's doing the job well. It was intended for live-band and studio use but that just meant the 1/4" mono jacks were changed to RCA or until I get a preamp that has a processor loop in balanced genre. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-06-2002 at 10:34 PM
  10. As much newer "POP" music that is out there I don't think it can be dead. By definition "POP" music is derived from the word "Popular". But then again, I really protest a record company or radio station TELLING me what to listen to. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-06-2002 at 12:47 PM
  11. We've got some industrial discoteque type JBL-300's that have Altec 411A woofers. The biggest problem is that about every eight to ten years we have to replace the surrounds because they just disintegrate to what looks like 200 year old parchment paper. Can anyone suggest a more bullett proof surround for these monsters. We're running them 16ohm with a Phase Linear 400 (LF) bi-amped with a Hafler (model??), BGW 202 preamp, SAE 2700b eq., SAE 24(?) crossover. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit

The big problem from canned compressed air is that an icy substance can squirt out and discolor plastic or possible damage electronics thenselves. Other than that, there OK. If you using compressed air can from Staples, Radio Shack etc. then just be sure to point the straw at an upwards angle (about 50 deg. or so) and give the can a quick burst in that position before you spray the components. This will help clear any liquid that is in the pick-up tube, valve assembly, straw etc... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  15. The fact that you don't get warranty papers may or may not mean you have a warranty. Is it because someone at the store purpously took them out of the boxes with the intnet for you not to have them (Klipsch would really like to hear about that)? Are they just plain missing from the floor model set of papers? Otherwise you can just register your speakers on this site. If the "dealer" is not an authorized dealer by Klipsch then the only you'll be able to get warranty work done is to go to the shop you bought them from and THEY have to go to Klipsch or the authorized dealer they bought them from to get what you need. Don't take the shop's word for it, check it out on this web-site to see if your local shop is indeed an authorized dealer. It could save you a lot of hassle if they are. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  16. Sounds like (B)arbara (S)treisand to me... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  17. Just that curiousity K.O.'d the feline. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  18. And don't expext it to be a quick turn around time either. I called Uncle's to get a new crossover (long story there) on Feb. 11, 02. I have still yet to see it. Although the person handling it said that Klipsch can be very slow in getting something out. I know that's (B)arbara (S)treisand because I've gotten non-warranty parts from Klipsch from Hope to Cincinnati in about a week. A package going from Hope to NYC to Cinti. should only take no more than 12 days. Since it crosses the Mississippi River, that takes a week right there, I don't know why. Then from NYC to home should take no more than three to four days. The parts dept. at Uncle's swears it was ordered the same day I called it in. Shoot- it took me five phone calls and three weeks just to get a copy of the sales receipt! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-28-2002 at 04:29 PM
  19. Boa- O.K. I missed the part about him wanting an HT setup. I should have caught that with the speakers he already has (duhhh). For the dvdp maybe he can wait a little while till Mac comes out with the MVP842(?) that'll play CD-R and maybe CD/RWs. Audio Classics told me it should be out this summer. Not sure if he said he wanted a vinyl rig also. That could be equally fun. So far we've got about $23,000 in front end alone. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  20. I hear ya on tubes. I'm not the most up to date person to give advise on those. So let's stick with SS for now. How about a Mac C-200 or C-100 preamp and an MVP-841 CD/DVD (gee, see a trend?)? Those retail for around $7k for the pre and $3k for the CDp. Then we need wires too!!! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  21. For a variety of cartridges you can try Needle Doctor . Once you find one in your range start looking at other sites for that same model. I bought a Shure V15VxMR from Audio Advisor for $275 and another site had it for $239. I thought I was getting a good deal at $275 since Needle Doctor and some others were asking $325. There have been some praises on this BB about Grado cartrides but I haven't heard one yet. Needle Doctor may be able to come up with some belts for ya although I've been told a long time ago by a friend /technician that the factory belts usually work best and last the longest. Most local shops I go to just want you to bring in the old belt so they can size it up with "XYZ Company"'s close match. About a year ago I went to Yamaha to get a couple for the PF-800 but they cost a mint, about $18 ea. if memory serves. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-01-2002 at 09:24 AM
  22. The speaks are just too sweet. Though I'm not that well versed in subs. boa- I do agree with you on the front end armorment. The Yammy may be used for a decent bedroom sys. Should we get him into tubes?? Maybe a 300B setup? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  23. (blushing) Oh...I'm sure he can do a little better than what I've got. $30k is twice what I dumped in "The Money Pit". ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  24. Preamp could be a Hovland HP-100 for about $5,000. www.hovlandcompany.com Boa- You know we're gonna have fun with this one. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-26-2002 at 04:49 PM
  25. Well, we can start with a pair of McIntosh MC1201 mono-block amps for say...oh...$13,000 a pair. Did we spend too much already? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
