  1. [D] Margaritas all around! I was just having fun playing with Photoshop when I made that avatar. Actually, the stick figure was not my creation but I just added on a whole lot. I guess I got a little carried away!
  2. I thought this was a good one too! Great parody!
  3. I just noticed that it was 1 year ago today that I found this forum and joined up! Less than 2 weeks later I was a proud owner of a couple pairs of Cornwalls... I couldn't believe that I found them just a couple of hours away! It is a year later and I am poorer but happier as my daily Klipsch therapy has been going quite well. I haven't had a whole lot to say this past year but I have enjoyed learning and laughing with you all... Thanks! []
  4. It has taken me some time but I've tried your suggestions (except for the scissors) and nothing I tried removed the paint! [:'(] I'm sure it doesn't help that I waited so long. Ran across some fabric dye spray paint the other day that I think I will try as a last resort prior to new grill cloth. Thanks for the suggestions and I'll let you know how it goes!
  5. Ad was flagged for removal before I could read it. anyway... don't they know there will be plenty of Klipsch in Heaven?! Whatever your belief, I think that is a nice thought.
  6. any suggestions for what to ask the glass dealer... any particular type of glass? how thick? what kind of edge? I've been thinking about this to protect from the random beverages or whatever that might find their way.
  7. I see you have the window mount tube cooler located right between your speakers! ...smart move! http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/storage/4/1403418/dual%20CHII.JPG
  8. Great idea for surrounds! One of these days I'm going to yank those Speakercrafts out of my ceiling family room! Are these like the ones you got from Harbor Freight? Grinder Stands Looks like they are on sale, too.
  9. I haven't tried this specifically to make it easier to strip later but I would think that a coat of sanding sealer prior to painting would be a good idea. Others might have an idea about that.
  10. Oh no... its gotta be copper gutters! wheww that is a LOT of pennies!
  11. hmm... how 'bout "My cardboard Khorn build" or "Use aluminum gutters as speaker wire?"
  12. this IS a cancer of sorts... maybe too many swisher sweets and Boones Farm Strawberry Hill 25 years ago. I was partial to TJ Swan "Magic Moments" as it was about 50 cents cheaper... $1.79 if I remember. Maybe it was the amount of sulpher dioxide they put in those screw top bottles... I don't know... I'm more partial to tequila these days. I did catch the disease though... and how. My normaly dust and cobweb covered wallet seems to easily fly open for another audiogon purchase even just 1 hour after receiving my last UPS order. Well! I need to compare for myself, after all! Don't I?! Experience matters... in multiple ways. One is that regarding how and what we hear I cannot ever truly know your experience, albeit in similar fashion if someone was to drop bricks on your head and mine I would guess that our experience would be similar (depends on how much tequila). I'm very interested in the science too and would probably want to know about the physics involved but most of all I just want to get out of the way of that brick. Another is that your listening experience matters to me. I can read and listen to the folks here tell of their experiences with different equipment, what music they like, what they don't like etc... I take this information to help make decisions about what equipment I am going to try. So far, I am elated! With my limited budget this will be a long journey but I could be done now (really, I could quit anytime if I wanted [] ) but while I might slow down I probably won't quit. Some results might wind up hitting me like a brick or on the other hand it might do that amazing stuff to my ears that makes my brain so happy sometimes! Whether it is that $49 box, the AM radio in a 48 GMC 3/4 ton or a VW vanagon, or the BBX with your VRDs... all of those might have a good place in your memories or your future. I could enjoy listening to Dylan on any of these, happily still waiting for him to finally clear his throat on CD, vinyl, or that TDK 90 I recorded 30 years ago. Of course, I'd be lying if I didn't say that I really hope to hear him and many others someday on Mark and Craigs' creations! All that said, without saying much, I find that all wire sounds better when it is plugged in. So, thanks for the advice and the great discourse... watch out for the bricks and keep plugging in!
  13. DOH! Why didn't I think of that! I suppose the bottom of the speakers might not be as much of a concern but I'm thinking of Cornwalls on their sides... would be sad to see marks when I tilt them back up again. Glad you didn't find any marks... it would bother me knowing they had marks even where I couldn't see them.
  14. That is a pretty clever idea! I am concerned though if there are any marks from the rubber showing up on the finish. You might want to check. I had a cheap clock with rubber feet that I had sitting on a chest that I had finished in tung oil. The feet left black marks that seemed to have soaked into the finish. I have not yet started sanding to see how deep it goes. Boiled Linseed oil might not have the same problem and the "rubber" feet on that clock might have had something on them or perhaps they weren't even actual rubber... I just don't know. I was so mad that I threw the clock out. I'd like to try this if I could protect the finish.
  15. I've made it squeak... actually it was more of a SCRREEEEEEEEEECH! [] Just started using DiscDoctor with nice results so far! No machine- just by hand with their brushes. He has some suggestions on using it with a machine.
  16. After paying for proper calibration you won't want to touch your contrast/brightness ever again!
  17. That is good news! I've been waiting for this one! Maybe it will help me be more patient waiting to buy any new video equipment. [Y]
  18. Those are 1968 Cornwalls with ALK crossovers that I got from Gilbert last year (Great guy to deal with! Really takes good care!). I guess a previous owner had oriented these for sitting on their side. They even have the logo so it is right side up with the speaker on its side. I don't know if it was ever done that way from the factory. Actually, in this picture I have them turned as far to the center as I can (which is not much). It sounded really bad so I pulled them out as close to the edge as I could and moved them to be more centered between the wall and the chimney chase. This improved things a lot but any sweet spot is about 5 or 6 feet over my head at this point! Not good! I'd like to try tilting the speakers to point down towards the seating area but I'm afraid they could slide right off the cabinet. I plan on tacking a thin strip of wood to act as a stop for the bottom edge. I'd like to try a lot of different positions with those Cornwalls but it is tough standing on the top of a step ladder trying to move a 100 lb speaker! Gee whiz... imagine if I decide I want to swap them! Perhaps in a few years I can move them down to the floor when the kids are old enough to not beat them up with their toys. I think taking care of the room with some strategically placed acoustic panels will help a lot too. The room has such a bad echo that you notice it even when trying to have a conversation. Luckily, I have another pair in my office system that is a much better arrangement. In there they are about the same distance apart from each other as they are from the side wall. As far as bass it is just right! You might come up with positioning that sounds great on your first try but I think you are going to have to experiment some and be willing to move your furniture around in a few different configurations. Honestly you will never know until you try! The bad news is that you might move everything back where you had it at the very start but then you will know. Trust your ears and don't worry about it! JamesV is certainly right... run with whatever you like!
  19. Just don't put them ten feet up! See in the attached pic an example of TOO high! The positioning shown sounded pretty bad and the repositioning I have done since this picture only improved the sound a little. I just didn't have any other choice if I wanted these in the living room. The top of these cabinets are just over 9 feet and I had to borrow a scaffold to get these 68 vertical Cornwalls up there! The room is also very live which doesn't help. ...maybe my Elmo listening chair is just too low! [^o)]
  20. hmmm... my Cornwalls have BassLine panels installed which are kind of eggshell looking. I don't have any instrumentation to measure anything except my ears so I thought I would take a listen to hear what I would find. I used the test cd from RealTraps and found that yes, there is a "sound" eminating from the speakers starting at around 19Hz but it was only audible with the volume set at "holy krap that's loud". By the time it got to 35Hz I had to turn it down to "turn that down, the kids are trying to sleep" because it was starting to sound nasty. By the time it hit 40Hz I was turning it down to a more normal listening volume. So, was he being truthful? Yeah, I suppose you can say that it "produces a tone" but nothing much useful or noticable. It would be interesting to compare with the stock liner but I have no basis for comparison. Please excuse my lack of scientific method here... just playing. Now I think I'll see where my hearing stops and the dog starts going crazy!
  21. Nothing you wipe on is going to help much unless you leave the towel on the speaker when you are done. Any real UV protection would mean a refinish or at the least a new top coat. Of the ones I have used, I would not like any of the marine UV finishes on my speakers as they added a definate amber tone to the finish. That is a fine and an expected result for my boat but not my speakers. Some say they are "clear" but aren't really. Other folks might know some that are. Even with the wood protected if the fabric gets any sun it will eventually fade and turn to dust, or as in my case years ago (on non-klipsch) actually get brittle. The film is a great idea if you can stop 100% of the UV. UV rays are the strongest from 10 to 3 so that Eastern sun will be hitting that speaker pretty hard. Personally, I would want the film AND the cloth drapped over the speaker side. I am hoping to get some film installed on my windows as I am getting some short midday exposure to sun on a pair of mine. I have plenty of pictures of their current state and will be able to see any changes over time. Now I have to get a ladder tall enough to get to those windows! Or, as an alternative, maybe you could put your wife's greatgrandmother's handmade quilt and quilt rack between the speaker and the window to give some shade. [^o)]
  22. Oppo DV-980H with the Scott 299b. I don't think I noticed a difference between the "Extra" and "Tuner"... I think I had a flaky connection at one point. See my additional comments I just made on this configuration at another post here Oppo Owners
  23. I have an DV-980 that I use with a Scott 299b. My current configuration might seem crazy but it is what is working for me. I set the volume on the Oppo to the highest volume but I also have some Harrrison 6db attenuators installed inline. The reason I arrived at this is because it has seemed somewhat easy to overdrive the input on the Scott. I had previously installed the 6db attenuators on my computer connection to the Scott which really helped bring things under control. I had really been fighting to find a sweet spot with the volume on the PC and the Scott. Craig at NOS valves had suggested using the attenuators with the CD player and the Scott. When I told him that the player had a volume control he suggested just using the volume control to turn down the output. When comparing the reduced volume with the control vs. the attenuators it just seemed to me that I was losing something using the volume control. Don't really know what I am hearing... Might be all in my head... but my ears are happy for now. Now I just need to get the turntable in shape for those records I've been buying and pulling out of storage. (I always loved that Maxell poster! )
  24. I can't believe I am suggesting this because I love natural finishes... but since I would probably want to veneer these later and wouldn't care so much what I do now as long as it doesn't hurt anything... deep breath... I would paint them a light color... maybe white... Leave the components well taped off and give her some paints so she can use them as her pallet. Let her have the fun! That said... I would not do anything that couldn't be undone with some filler and new veneer. I might have a stroke if someone suggested painting any of mine!
  25. Finally back in stock at J&R Music... good price!
