Can you tell which valves were put in by the homeowner(me) and which were done by the hired help? You can use pure tung oil on a lacquered finish to touch up anywhere lacquer has worn. It is a drying oil just like lacquer as opposed to a penetrating oil. I use it on the cabinetry in my house. Just let it sit for a few minutes and remove any excess other wise you'll have a blob.

I would try another pair if you're not happy. What have you got to loose? Tell the vendor there is something wrong with the pair you received.
