  1. Hey I am going to build a subwoofer in the near future and need a plate amp. I am looking between the Dayton Audio 250W and Yung 300W. Does anyone have any experience with these and what has been the better choice as far as quality and longevity? http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-spa250-250-watt-subwoofer-plate-amplifier--300-803 http://www.parts-express.com/yung-sd300-6-300w-class-d-subwoofer-plate-amplifier-module-with-6-db-at-30-hz--301-510
  2. 97 lbs and 50 inches or so wide? Nah, one man. Yeah dude what could go wrong...
  3. Sorry, didnt mean to delete the whole title. They were black KG 5.5's for sale for $100 but a member got them for $75.
  4. Nice! You will have to post some pics. I was toying with the idea of getting them to cut one apart and make into a center channel but its a 3 hr drive and I need a new sub amp instead. Besides, I feel better knowing that they are going to be used as is by an enthusiast and not disassembled.
  5. Not sure where you live but there is a set of KG 5.5's for sale for $100 bucks in Idaho: http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/ele/4952618904.html If you put those up front with the KG 3's as surrounds and the KG 2's as surround back and the academy as a center you would have a phenomenal home theater system. Then you could use the Heresy's as a separate 2 channel setup in a different room etc.
  6. Very nice! I have always enjoyed your HT shots etc. I am a Canon shooter myself but have not taken many speaker photos. I am overdue to get some shots of my setup and post them. Anyway, here is my 500px account if you want to check out some random photos I have uploaded: https://500px.com/twkutina I find photography and audio are actually quite similar as you are taking reality and then capturing and reproducing it in the greatest fidelity possible.
  7. No affiliation but it looks like a great deal: http://eastidaho.craigslist.org/ele/4952618904.html
  8. Lol I love vaguely relevant spin-off threads...
  9. I have a smaller HT room with the couch about 1.5 ft from the back wall. I used to have my surrounds with the tweeter pointed directly at my ears which was great for music but I really didnt like it for movies. Instead of a surround field it was more of a "Hey there is the surround coming out of my speaker...". Anyway, last night I decided to move the surrounds out about 2ft and bounce them off the back wall into the listening position and its MUCH better. I like the diffused sound as much of the content is ambient noise which in real life is often bounced off many surfaces before getting from the source to your ears. That being said, what is your surround strategy? Do you guys prefer localized sound from direct pointing, shooting over the head or reflected?
  10. $75!!! Thats awesome man. I spent $450 on mine and love them. They are so efficient and clear that when I watch movies I totally forget the sound is actually coming from the speakers. As Klipschfancf4 mentioned earlier, they do like a lot of power to make those parallel 10'' woofers really open up.
  11. Oh no worries, I'm completely content with his viewpoint. If his preference is for a specific type of component, then that's his perfectly respectable opinion to prefer it. It does not mean, however, that we haven't measured, blind listened to and catalogued the values, tolerances, ESR, ESL and other aspects of insertion loss of about 15 different brands of caps including all those listed thus far and those used in our products. We use what we need to get the most out of our designs. If someone feels that they can get more out of them, then that's their choice. A "higher quality" capacitor or resistor does not imply a better loudspeaker if the original component lets the drivers function as intended. Hey at least you didnt make the WRX look like a Prius and then refuse to but a turbo in the BRZ like Subaru did...
  12. They don't, that's why I told him to save his money. So at the end of the day just play it by ear and make sure its not making any bad noises? The SW-12 is an 8ohm driver and the amp is 150 w RMS while the new amp will be this: http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-spa250-250-watt-subwoofer-plate-amplifier--300-803 It says its 156w RMS into 8ohms which is pretty close. Will the balance of the passive radiator system keep the sub from going too low to damage it or is there a high pass built into the stock amp that I will need to replicate if using a normal plate amp? EDIT: It looks like the amp has a high pass of 20Hz from the website. As it is now the current amp is far more likely to damage things by not throwing a clean wave at the driver so I dont have much to lose, specifically if I am planning on going DIY in the near future anyway. My receiver does not have any EQ and I dont have any inline DSP ability.
  13. I agree. I have the KG 5.5 with Crites titanium tweeters and love them. The only thing about the 5.5 is its extremely difficult to find a center channel to match them for HT application. Phantom sounds good but if you are off axis it takes away from the effect.
  14. That is correct, the sub range on the manual says 28 hz so I figured I would get one of these as an insurance policy for now: http://www.parts-express.com/harrison-labs-fmod-inline-crossover-pair-30-hz-high-pass-rca--266-248 Thanks for all the advice btw
  15. Tell her happy belated from me. I could look at the F-20 build thread and figure out how long ago it was but wondered how many subs I've built since then. I'm thinking 7 or 8. Hey I just read your F-20 build thread and am inspired. I noticed you tested the sub with a 250 W plate amp. Could I use this amp to run the sub normally? I have a pretty small room and dont need gobs of bass output, just clean and low. My SW-12 amp is getting worse and I figured I could get the $130 Dayton audio 250 W for it now as it puts out about 154 W RMS into 8 ohms and I will use an inline High pass filter at 30 hz so I dont kill it. Then when I get the time and money to actually do the build I can simply use the 250W amp on the f-20?
  16. There's a lot of reasons. Headroom is a good thing. The easier a sub works, the less distortion it produces. This sub has to keep up with 2 speakers that are 101dB efficient. He has a very open (lossy) floorplan In order to reproduce HT content that's frequently below 20Hz, you need a powerful sub that won't drop off and keep up with the mains even when playing below 20Hz. Ok that makes sense. How low can the Lil Wrecker go before dropping off? Also, how many movies actually have ULF below 20 Hz? it's illogical until you have one Lol I have been meaning to Visit Cantilope for a while now to hear his THT, I will probably be hooked. On a separate note, would it be possible to create a IB/Folded horn hybrid in which the back of the driver fired into the attic space but shot forward through a horn then into the room?
  17. Monoprice is awesome. I used to like Mediabridge but have had a couple of HDMI cords fail so I have been going with Monoprice since.
  18. Just for you beeker, I tried it with a bic lighter. It blew it out about a foot from the mouth and it wasn't all the way up. I have the new driver in, up and running. This thing is DEEP and POWERFUL. People throw around superlatives all the time regarding subs so I won't even try. I can however say that is the most powerful single driver sub I've ever built, period. My garage is a terrible place to test cabs as I work in the middle of the floor and it's very open. With the garage doors down, it was shaking everything inside. My daughter came out and said she could feel it in the kitchen (not hear, feel!). We have a slab house and detached garage. At one point I reached in to feel the assembly to make sure nothing was getting warm and it literally hurt my chest. The whole session the amp and driver both ran cool which was awesome. I don't think Ron will ever test it's limits in his house. Honest question- what is the reason you need a sub this powerful? Is it good to have the headroom or if you have a large space to energize or is this more just an exercise to see how much bass you can produce from a horned sub?
  19. I couldnt imagine what it would be like to be the guy that has to dig through the wreckage to pull the black box out.
  20. There is some good music today, you just have to look for it. There is some amazing hip hop out there but mainstream rap is garbage and it what is most prevalent. Artists like Atmosphere are awesome songwriters and storytellers: https://youtu.be/BpqOWO6ctsg https://youtu.be/hoLxuyV9qz8 (How do you embed youtube videos? Its not working for me anymore.)
  21. Beautiful car but too refined for my taste . I want an animal ! Jeez that thing is nuts. Ok so here is the plan: We lobby to bring back Group B rally, get some off road tires and some more downforce, re tune the suspension and let it rip! (Its too bad they paved pikes peak though...)
  22. Speaking of Blacks, if you do go the TV route is is best to have an LED or Florescent light hanging on the back and illuminating the wall behind the TV. This will make the blacks more pronounced on your TV and it will greatly help reduce eye strain because your pupils wont have to constantly expand and contract throughout the movie. 23. I see your AWD drifting around LA and raise you Chris Harris drifting a beautiful Ferarri F12... https://youtu.be/cjp1xjOzJqY
