Is it Just Because CD's Are Louder?
codewritinfool replied to thebes's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
... and I'll say it again... You don't know if your comparison to your turntable is valid or not. Until you have a calibration LP and a calibration CD to set your signal chain gain with, you can't possibly have any idea what the output level of any source device is relative to a different device. The best you can possibly say from the above is that between all your CD / DVD players, they all seem to have similar output levels to each other. It says nothing about your turntable or phono preamp if you have one. Comparing Album A in LP form to Album A in CD form is not at all a valid comparison. You may be right, BUT without a scientific test, you cannot know. -
Wow. All of those guys were necessary, IMO, to make Pink Floyd what we all know and love. That said, Waters is too much of an a*hole. Seemingly all of the time, to me. Way too political. Not saying I agree or disagree with him, but to quote Frank Zappa, “shut up and play yer guitar”. Gilmour for me, thanks.

Have you tried a calibration CD against a calibration LP? How do you know if you have similar gain in both paths? Without testing, I don't know how you could. Playing the same musical material in both formats wouldn't be a good test. Just thinking out loud. -
I have La Scalas... Which DIY sub will make my b(***) sound big??

P.S. @mookiestl it is in the Valley. -
Free two pairs of Heresy I Speakers! GONE!

I will publicly pinkie swear right here and now that if I am awarded these, and if I ever tire of them, I will offer them up in the same way offered by @Blackbird. -

Lol I can’t haul the thing! You’re welcome to come get it anytime you want, though! (I should've just built it with wheels and a trailer hitch). -

I’m happy with the THT. I built the LP version and it was pretty easy. -

Planning on changing amps from PP KT120 to SET 2A3
codewritinfool replied to DjOverdose's topic in Talkin' Tubes
Around 3.5W for a 2A3. Around 8W for a 300B. -

Thank you for the offer, I would love to listen to Heresies. Where are you located? -
Does designing an amplifier by ear really work?
codewritinfool replied to tube fanatic's topic in Talkin' Tubes
Hum is good if you don’t know the words. -
My father was a Mason but told us that when he died, he did not want a Masonic service, “and your mother knows why”. So, when he died he did not have one. Mom is gone now, too, and I never asked her why.

Those running huge multi subwoofers
codewritinfool replied to mr clean's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
No way. Power consumption of your sub is going to be down in the noise compared to your dishwasher, HVAC, and many other things. I wouldn’t worry about it. -
What an insightful first comment. I think we have a spammer in our midst.
-
I didn't realize that was a Masonic thing. My father was a Mason and most of my uncles are Masons. Dad wore a watch on his left arm. Not sure about the uncles.

What about that photo makes you wonder? I don’t know if he was or not but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Speaker test music? Dynamic Highs/Lows ...
codewritinfool replied to Emile's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
Don’t confuse dynamics (range of amplitude) with wide spectral content. It would be easy to produce either independently. Finding “stunner” tracks that incorporate both is a trick. I always recommend Norah Jones - Come Away With Me, The Pineapple Thief - Your Wilderness, Eric Clapton - Pilgrim, Dire Straits - On Every Street, Flim and the BB’s - Tricycle. That’s a good starter list. -
BTW @No.4, was that a neurochrome pre? I wasn’t impressed with mine. Noise floor is way too high to suit my tastes.
-
Me too. Keep in touch. Maybe we can compare notes. I’m working on collecting parts for the Novar Spud now but had my mind SET on 2a3 / 300b. [emoji3]

Just my luck, Tom is out of the boards and isn't making any more. Anyone here happen to have a set of DG300B boards? Partial stuffing is ok, not looking for a completed amplifier. Thanks code

This story became very vivid in my mind as I read it. I have done that TOO many times and always vowed never to do it again. I inevitably woke up vomiting or woke up sitting on the bathroom floor with my head on the cold tub. Not at all fun. The next day is just awful too. Not worth it, but it always seems worth it when you're working up to it. PWK was awesome. I wish I could have met him.

I have a friend that claims that he and his wife were having a hard time conceiving a child and so they went to this clinic. Nurse ratchet handed him a cup and said she needed a sample and pointed at a room. He went in there and said he looked around for some motivation and couldn’t find any. He was in there a while, came out and handed the cup to nurse ratchet and she took it, looked in it, and said, “I wanted a urine sample”.

Unbelievable! Why can’t I find things like this?
