  1. Thebes my man - take any of the new found Richie Havens (he is so cool I am sure osmosis will take over), pour a glass of Santa Margharita Pinot Grigio, add a couple of ice cubes, add a slice of orange, put on some shorts (clean), a tank top T shirt (also clean), sit in the most comfortable chair, lean your head back and close your eyes til they are just tiny, narrow slits. Imagine a cool evening outside at the foot of the stage - you see Richie sitting in the center of the stage on a bar stool holding his guitar and putting his face close to the microphone at the end of a black stand. His clear, strong voice starts to slowly transfer its energy to you - your heart pumps in cosmic rythym with the beat and before long that energy is coursing through your veins. As you stand the wind stirs and starts blowing your hair (remember - we are still using our imagination). You face directly in the breeze letting the first cool nip of autumn clear your head and refresh your soul. As you glance to the left you are suddenly awash with desire as for the very first time (again) you see two gorgeous twins headed toward you and their intent is clear. It is the first time all over again........ sweet dreams.

I will gladly retract if the eye says so (and I would be glad to do so).

You may have to issue a retraction. ---------------- Nah Dean - at least not to my eye. I really have seen some very pretty La Scalas, but the Belle has such a rich look that I am quite taken. I am also with Tom - I really have a hard time differentiating the two except that the scala's narrow footprint lets it near a corner without taking up tons of space and even with the folded horn it gets a bit of boost on the bass. I worked with Gov. Rockefeller's Council on Human Relations and got to meet him in 1972 (he was trying to recover from Chemo). Great man in my opinion. This was a time when compassionate conservative was the nature of the Republican party and he was one of the best. I still manage to his 'do the right thing' attitude and his strong respect for the constitution. While I stayed pretty much the same, the political parties changed and I had to move from the Republican ranks

What kind of tracks do you find best on SS? ---------------- Interestingly enough I prefer a well mixed and well recorded to medium (either vinyl or CD) complex classic orchestra through SS. In these cases I seem to always find more of the soul capturing detail I get at a live performance. I catch myself turning my head toward a specific instrument because it catches my attention. It is a bit like your favorite movie - there is always a small surprise everytime you listen. The same happens with most complex arrangements (if recorded well) - some of the Jean Luc Ponty stuff, Patrick Moraz, etc. - and with some of the more interesting synthesized stuff - ELP, etc. Of couse - it is my ear's opinion only...
  5. Well Dee - My ear has always told me that there are pluses and minuses with good quality SS or tube. That is exactly the reason I have both setups for the same speakers downstairs. There are just some passages on various recordings that sound less natural with one or the other. The more intricate loud passage seems crisper on my SS and a piano solo sounds best on my tubes - your experiences may differ. All is in my ear's opinion - I just haven't found Nirvana yet....
  6. Yo Indy - way to go, looks like a great set up. I did a quick look around the net on colors and it looks like blue runs second to red in quality low light situations and is apparently less disruptive to projected images, so it looks like muted blue would be the best bet for lighting. No opinion on wall color - You will get some interesting results with darker colors that don't come across as closing in (like black and dark grey) when the lights are up and you are entertaining in a different way. 3 cents...
  7. I think that you are seeing a couple of things - the LaScala was never made to be pretty in the living room and it was built to fit in most any part of a larger venue. All said you could get a tough old speaker - hang it from the ceiling, cart it around to different venues and paint it 20 times if you need to. Sound wise I think you will get a bunch of folks that prefer it to the Belle - it will just never be as pretty - even when dressed to the nines....
  8. Ok folks - I may be wrong here, but my 3802 has channel level settings by effect, source and type. I imagine you could make a difference by adjusting the channel levels and you wouldn't have the fluctuations you mentioned. Also there is a 10db boost for DD if I remember correctly. I get nothing similar to yours except between sources.
  9. I am not all all on board with Parrot on this - start your own collection or piecemeal out and keep your favorites. Great collection - it has my interest.
  10. Congrats Doc. It is harder to get in the long listening sessions in the summer and it lets the thoughts of audio drift. However, i have just recently lost a dear friend - my old RPTV decided to give up. I am going to replace the slot in my whole wall cabinet with a fireplace and mantle in the lower section and a Plasma TV in the upper (Pioneer PDP 5050hd). I, of course, had to buy a Universal player so I am adding the Pioneer DV-59AVi. I guess this will have to be the new baby in our household. Now, back to my mantle drawings and reassesment of my woodworking skills - Fireplace is framed waiting for insert....
  11. double post, hmmm....
  12. I think that you may find that fixing the relays/thermostat for the aux fan could be your culprit - that fan serves two purposes. One is early for air before you are up to high way speed and as aux cooling after the water reaches a certain temperature. It is a design they have used for years - it is also on my 2001 740. The only difference is mine is veriable speed and yours is a two (maybe three) speed unit. I had a periodic overheating - it was almost invariably during some extended stop and go after water was heated up. I was able to clean out some trash and get all working again before taking to the shop. Regardless the aux fan needs replacing - if it isn't the culprit here it will be later. You could put a toggle on the bypass hanging out of the hood (yeah - not classy, but effective) and run it with the aux fan working fora few days to see if it is a cure before doing anything else. Good luck.
  13. Yo folks - a little late to this party. I would like to try this. I could drop by Daddy Dee's (promised a year or so ago to do so), stop in to visit Mom, visit brother and visit other brother on the way back. It really does interest me, so count me in for now. Fini - fly to St. Louis and take a road trip with me....
  14. On the BMW - a couple of thoughts: Are you noticing any strangeness with the air conditioning - more specifically, is the air conditioning having trouble staying cool unless you are running above 35 MPH? If so you may have an auxilliary fan failure (this is the fan in front of the radiator). Even so you may have a problem with one of the two speeds of the fan. It would be a cause of sporatic overheating and usually associated with slower or slowing down situations. A simple check would be to start the car with the airconditioning running and look through the front grill and see if the fan is working (it is supposed to always start with the air on) - if it is not working that is your most likely culprit. Unfortunately, if it is working it doesn't talk to the higher speed setting and would take a bit more diagnostic. Also - the fan clutch for the main fan can be causing a problem in that it sporatically doesn't engage. You can check this when it is overheating to be sure it is spinning. The aux fan is a common failure - this is a very low torque fan and you may have something as simple as debris keeping it from working. It's high speed is most important because it switches on when the water temp reaches a certain level. Hope this helps...
  15. Here is a layman's impression of viewing each and of the published viewing angles - I have just completed an extensive 'eye' test in looking to replace my ailing 8 year old rear projection. My choice will become obvious. The viewing angles spec is a bit wrong according to my eyes - the LCD looses color definition well before the published 170 degree viewing angle. It is still clearly viewed, but the colors get a very washed out effect rather quickly as you move off axis. Plasma is easily viewed at their specified angles and retains the color. LCD is brighter and does not have a bothersome glare from the screen. Plasma black levels are a clear hands down winner making contrast adjustments a very valuable and capable tool for your environment. A reasonable very dark grey is the best I could get from LCD. All LCD's I reviewed ghosted to some degree more than the better Plasmas. All plasmas had a bit of screen glare, with pioneer doing something odd - look closely and the glare is there and vibrant, but when watching it is very hard to see (beats the heck out of me how this happens). Plasmas have a wider larger screen selection. As to LCD and DLP rear projectors - neither fares well in comparison with LCD or Plasma panels. Off angle on DLP is very poor and the picture is not very bright. Most DLPs leave artifacts all over the place (I would worry about sports) and LCDs still wash out off center. To this eye it was simple - Plasma was a hands down winner in most every category. For my preference I cannot understand reviews that hawk the rear projectors as superior and have only a limited understanding of how LCDs are favorably compared. For the price - the rear projectors are great performers, but Plasma wins on picture quality to my eye against all others. All is IMHO....
  16. These are Sansui all the way. In the 70s a bunch of these kept showing up back home with the soldiers serving in the vietnam arena. R&R and base was often in Japan and the price/performance was very good. These (or speakers like these) were the first to get me interested in a better quality sound....
  17. To respond in Fini fashion: I usually mount my Heresy from the rear.......
  18. As a tinkerer and ceiling mount person as well I have to take my hat to you. It has the beauty and simplicity that is generally a trademark of good design. Well done.
  19. Don't know about the amp but bought some Fender Grille Cloth from him a year or so ago - very good guy...

  21. I have to disagree with above - generally speaking a higher efficiency speaker (such as the larger Klipsch) takes much less power to drive. This translates to very clean sound, especially at lower volumes where there is very little little power being used. DISCLAIMER - electronic are a large part of this and may produce varied results....

I have this little amp from an old RCA console, 6BQ5 single end, that I have been wanting to try on something, but never had anything as efficient as the Heresy. It should be 3-4 watts. John ---------------- 3 - 5 Watts is not quite the best for all around use of a Heresy. I have a very quiet lower level environment (probably around 50 - 60db type quiet) and I get settled in and get carried away by the clarity and detail that seems to come through so nicely at the lower wattage. It is definitely not loud, but very much loud enough for my purpose. When I want volume downstairs I go with my homebrew big JBLs (but they are fast becoming my primaries).

I have three pair of heresy and parts from a heresy to form a modified center for the HT. Of all the Heresy placements I favor the pair I have like Randy's - the only difference is that mine are in the top ceiling corners and slightly angled down and in. I spent years finding this preferred position - it suits my ear well. A boomy Heresy must be the source - it is pretty darn hard to make this speaker boomy. My next favorite is downstairs when I use them as something akin to 'nearfield' - 6 feet apart, very slght toe in, slanted risers and directly in the middle 6 feet away. Running about 4 watts with some great recordings of jazz or blues and I have my favorite set of oversized headphones. Enjoy
