  1. Hi, jjptkd (remember you from the Carver forum - (sold you a Sunfire Sig amp you said you were giving to OO). These are my office speakers and will be retiring soon, have Quartets at home. The Quartets are mint and are a better fit for the house, so.............
  2. While everyone is debating the $4k Chorus II's advertised elsewhere, I'm putting my Chorus II's here in Houston up for sale. Thinking $800. Have had for 15 years, all original except for the grills, which were purchased new from Klipsch several years ago when you could still get them. Nonsmoker, no pets. Certainly not as nice as those for $4k, and obviously cosmetically they are in relatively rough shape, compared to most on this site. They were this way when I bought them, but musically they sounded as they should back then, and still do. Comments are welcome, if you're not too tough on me Don't need to sell, but if someone is interested who is local, please let me know.
  3. I use a Marantz 2230 in my medium sized office and think it sounds very good with plenty of power. Usually I listen to Apple Music off of my iPhone and Apple dongle, 3.5 to dual RCA's. A Marantz 2215, 2245 and 2270 would be similar. Also have used a Yamaha RX-950 (circa 1990) receiver that worked well also. Tried a couple of NAD receivers and Proton 1150 and 1200 power amps and wasn't as satisfied with them.
  4. I have a 2230 in my office powering my Chorus II's. No issues and sounds great, and so dang pretty. Highly recommend the 2230.
  5. I had the Marantz 2215 (only sold it because of recurring issues), now have the 2230. I don't care for the slide balance control either. With my Chorus II's it is more than plenty for me, glad I didn't pay extra for the 2270. If you can find a nice 2215, that wouldn't be a bad second choice. Good luck.
  6. Last summer I ordered from Klipsch 2 sets of replacement pads (1 walnut/1 black) for my walnut HP-3's when I was got the feeling that Klipsch was discontinuing the HP-3's and wondering about availability of replacement parts. When I finally was able to actually talk to someone to order them, I asked if they were discontinued and the rep said they weren't being made anymore, maybe they'd come out with a new model sometime in the future - not going to hold my breath on that. Guess we should be glad they actually produced the HP-3 for sale. The HP-1 and HP-2 they displayed at a couple of shows with the HP-3 never made it past that.
  7. I have one! (Or, rather, my son now has it). I used a RX-950 as my main unit for years, a lot of the time powering Magnepan 1.5's, 1.6's and 1.7's and then my Klipsch Chorus II's for awhile. This receiver is actually rated by Yamaha for 4 ohm performance (180 watts/ch). Never had an issue with the 4 ohm Maggies. For the price you'd probably pay at a thrift shop, it's a no-brainer, as long as it's in good working condition. When I auditioned my Klipsch Quartets the guy selling them demoed them on a Luxman R-117. Gotta say they sounded really good on that receiver. But my NAD 7000 receiver from the late 80's is pretty close to it in normal listening conditions. Get the RX-950.
  8. I ordered replacement earpads for my HP-3 headphones in mid-June and they shipped them to me the next day - so I know that part of Klipsch was open and working. The problem is in getting someone to answer the phone. Back in June when I ordered them, you could only call during a 4 hour period and it took me a few days before I actually got to talk to someone.
  9. I'm a little late to this thread - I too a few years ago bought a mint pair of Quartets for the house (I also have Chorus II's in my office). If you have access to other receivers or amps, try them out - I've found the Quartet's sound ever so different on other sources, you may prefer one over another.

    Hey Klipsch ...

2 weeks ago, after several days of trying, I was able to get ahold of someone at Klipsch to order a replacement pair of earpads for my HP-3's. He confimed (as I had suspected) that the HP-3's were discontinued. He did make the comment that Klipsch could in the future come out with an upgraded HP-3 (what, the HP-3 II?). I'm kind of not expecting that to happen.

    HP-3 Headphones

I think they're great for the $700 plus tax I paid for a new unopened pair (even if they were made on Oct 31, 2017). Prefer them to my Audeze LCD-2 Classic's. I also have/had Meze 99 Classics, Sennheiser 6xx, HiFiMan 4xx, some Grado's and these outperform them all and really do have that Heritage sound (as much as a headphone can). I will say for reference that I prefer a full, fun, you are there sound vs a more even neutral, analytical sound. They're fairly efficient, have a full bottom end, vocals are clear and highs have never been piercing (maybe not the best word). Will play well off of my iPhone 6S Plus, but do kick it up a notch (or two) with my Astell&Kern Kann DAP, and also with an ATC HDA-P2 Class A portable amp I just picked up using the line-out from my trusty iPod Classic (thanks to youtuber "No Theme Reviews" for cluing me in to this amp). I do wish they were a bit more comfortable. They earpads don't have that Audeze LCD plushness and the bottom of the headband is a bit hard. Otherwise, I'm enjoying them.

Well, I ordered a pair of Klipsch HP-3's in walnut and will let you know what I think.

    HP-3 Headphones

And I've wondered why there's no no talk about the HP-3's as I've read that they have that Klipsch "Heritage" sound. Surprised you've had no responses. I'm certainly interested in them also. As for your HP-3 or Meze 99 Classics question: I'm of the belief that as far as headphones are concerned, no one pair is right for all listening, plan on owning 2 or more different types. I own Audeze LCD 2-C's, Meze Noir 99's (the 99 Classic clone from Massdrop), Audeze iSine 10, Sennsheiser 650. The Meze Noir 99's are a fantastic bargain when on sale for $160 (regular $200). It is a closed headphone though so the sound is a bit more "closed" in which isn't that noticeable until you listen to something like the Audeze's open planar headphones. I haven't heard the the Klipsch HP-3's and don't doubt they'd be nice to have. Unfortunately their list price has increased to $1,379, even eBay used units are usually around $900 - $1,000. I'd get a pair of the Meze's from Massdrop, now called "Drop" (because they sound good, can be run off of anything and are relatively cheap) and after listening to them for awhile, see if you want to go further in the personal listening part of our hobby, which is going to mean more $ of course.
  14. I have Chorus II's and Quartet's, and have heard Forte II's - the one thing I think the Chorus II's do better than the other two is at lower volumes give me a fuller sound, more detail? (which I guess is to expected), so that I don't have to turn it up so much for those times when it can't be cranked. So, if I'm listening at lower volume do prefer the Chorus II. I like the Quartet's but find I need to listen to them at a louder level for my musical enjoyment.
  15. Have you checked with Klipsch to see if you can get new grilles from them? I bought a pair of new Chorus II grilles from them several years ago for about $115 shipped. Agree $1,000 is a bit high with no grilles, but then the supply of Klipschs in general is better in my area. I have a Marantz 2215 (15 watts/ch) receiver on the Chorus II's in my office that I'm happy with - I'd think the 2270 by itself would work fine (I'd love to try it )

    SOLD

I just picked up a mint Marantz 2215 this afternoon for $150. Who needs 20 watts/ch, let's see how 15 per channel goes. Can't wait to hook it up to either my Chorus II's or Quartet's. (I did want a 2270 or 2275, but couldn't pass this up) This is my first vintage Marantz. I can't believe how heavy it is for only 15 watts/ch. Also the controls are very solid feeling, the buttons take a bit of effort to push in and out, they have a nice solid click to them (almost like a firearm), this thing seems very well built.
  18. For about the past 30 years I've basically either had Klipsch's (currently have Chorus II's and Quartets) and/or Magnepan speakers (MMG's, 1.5's, 1.6's, 1.7's, 2.7's). Two very different approaches to making music and each have their pluses and minuses but to my ears all have been enjoyable (what is feeding them does make a difference). With the MMG's and the HIII's I'd either have 2 systems or arrange them to easily swap from one to another depending on what I was listening to and mood. Enjoy and report back!
  19. As far as to how much NAD power you need, with the Heritage speakers, you don't need alot. I have a late 80's NAD 7000 receiver rated at 40 watts/ch but has 6db of headroom. I used it briefly on my Chorus II's in an office setting at no more than moderate volume and it sounded fine. Then I picked up a pair of Quartet's for the house and am using the NAD 7000 on them, and I never get the volume knob past the 10:30 position where it is loud, tight and controlled! I haven't heard the later NAD's nor the new integrateds, do know they don't have quite the headroom as the 7xxx receivers so maybe a little more power is nice, but 40 watts is plenty for me. I'd try to find one of those receivers (or integrateds from that period) with a remote for a couple of hundred dollars. (BTW, why the Chorus's aren't in the house and Quartet's are - ask the wife)
  20. I owned the POA-2200 back when I had Magnepan speakers - I thought it was an ok amp, fairly neutral, wished it was a little warmer, but hey, the Maggies are demanding. My brother has a POA-2400 he uses on his Chorus II's and it does a good job on them in my opinion. No reason the 2200 wouldn't do a good job on the Forte II's and at least be a bit better than the AVR.
  21. I use and recommend the AudioEngine B1 Bluetooth receiver. Can hook up via toslink or by RCA cable to any receiver/integrated. To me sounds the same whether by toslink or RCA. Great range (works from anywhere in my 2 story house) and no dropouts when connected. About $189 but worth it.
  22. Another +1 on Magnepan speakers. To me the 1.7's are the best bang for the buck in their line, but any of the recent ones I would recommend.
  23. + on the Chorus II's, especially if you are listening at low levels. Mine right now are in a 225 sq ft office and I have to keep my volume low. Those big woofers really play nice at lower volumes, don't feel like I'm missing anything on the bottom end just because the volume is low. You have plenty of space for them in your case.
