  1. I am very OCD. Those caps would be replaced in my crossovers. They are defective, mechanically now. Who knows later. Solen seems very cavalier on this. May think it is abuse from high temperature environment. Would not think the zip ties could damage them. All I have used are solid construction. Remember comments that zip ties are bad for sonics. Is this why?
  2. Try forgetting your six and reconnecting new. My son had a problem like this with a Marshall Wootan. Got where he thought it was blown up. Reinstalled and volume came back to normal.
  3. That is an imposing mid driver. Googled it to see Pringle’s, Amazon shows 499.00. Also calls it a subwoofer with 4” voice coil. Nothing is perfect. Nashville Plywood and Middle Tennessee Lumber May stock the 1” Baltic birch. 42.00 a sheet is very reasonable.
  4. Dave did the same for me. The LS II has a different tweeter. Same K-77 driver, wider horn. In fact Dave machined them while we sat and listened to music. Glad he did not pull out the ‘shine. Leaving his place in the dark was a bit challenging sober. When it gets dark there, it is really dark.
  5. You may need to ignore our feedback. We are the Dave A fan club.
  6. Same here have Dave’s Walnut horns and B&C DE-120 in La Scala II. No mods to crossover. Sounds much improved.
  7. I do not know the Duke. But used interfaces with MC33079 quad opps.. Surface mount package. Tried several replacements. None were an improvement. Most a step back. I would leave these alone. I doubt the TL084 is an upgrade. Crown designed these with sound quality in as a priority. After all these years a recapping might pay dividends.
  8. Yes, 3,000.00 should get a pair in excellent condition. With nice wood. The mods are nice. Rough painted cabinets put these in the sub 1,000 range for me. And your room is really too small. Cut out some 25” x 25” cardboard and place them on the floor. Pull out about a foot from the wall. Look how they dwarf the room. And see what listening distance works out as. I sit about 10’ from mine. Some feel they need to to 15 - 20’ away from you.
  9. Try the internet for the wool. Should be able to source some. Check some diy speaker supply websites.
  10. I think REW is incredible. Would love to try and align my LS ii. Need to make another donation to keep it running. Spent a month first sweeping the interface and evaluating issues. Then a couple amplifiers to see what they delivered. Found a 3 dB difference in one of my diy builds, plus distortion shift between channels. Never played music during that month. Back to listening now. I think I can spend a year diddling with the speakers. I might try the crossovers built into Pure Music. 64 bit filters with amplitude and time adjustments.

  12. Damn, Those do seem to be excellent. The ported bottom end may be the ticket. The port flares are a step up. Usually a port is a hole in the cabinet. Like the decision to front firing port. More flexibility in wall spacing. The price may be zooming up, but the competing new speakers are not getting cheaper either. The horn loaded ports sure look pretty. Would love to hack some on my Hiii.
  13. I dream over the top. How about two braces per side? Maybe closer together than thirds, say gaps of 35-30-35% of height to better contain the mid panel deflection and spread the resonance frequency? I have a giant roll of automotive double sided “tape” used to attach trim to cars. Sticks to paint and varnished surfaces. Grey rubber looking stuff. Do not laugh, used it to mount some LED lights under kitchen cabinets. A friend laughed when they saw my project. But they have been there over 16 years now. Never drooped or fell. Yet. I am sure it would work great to temporarily mount these braces. Plus not damage the finish of the LS ii.
  14. Off to Claude for measurements. Some more knowledgeable than me have said this is better than smooth. Definitely looks very nice.
  15. I like Dickel, my brother lives in Winchester and he recommended it. Tullahoma is close. He drives past Lynchburg to get there. Used to turn up my nose to KY bourbon. Four Roses Yellow label. That is the my stuff now. Only drink straight. Maybe a couple cubes made from filtered water. People give me whiskey. Think I am a whiskey drinker. I just have a lot. Used to drink Weller 107 because it was in a pretty bottle 35 years ago. Liked Eagle Rare better. Found a forty year old bottle of Beam in the liquor closet. Still had the Oklahoma tax sticker, been gone from there a while. It was excellent. I think sitting in the dark for a LONG time made it much smoother. Maybe old Beam is what Hank Jr drank.
  16. The LS do not look so big in your room. They appear huge at my house. Really like the mid horns. Do not know if they work better than my K-400. But sure look better.
  17. The factory wiring in my La Scala II was 14 ga. Seemed fine.
  18. I agree, this is a fun forum. We all have idiosyncrasies that might offend others. Let’s all agree to disagree.
  19. Go good stethoscope is 20.00. Most medical supply stores have them in all ranges. I can see the splitter size causing an issue. They are there to couple the chambers. Can you cut them to match the other LS you have?
  20. I subscribe to Stereophile to look at two of JA’s measurements. First is the dac measurement of a -90.3 dB1K Hz sine wave with a 16 bit signal and then again at 24 bit. The drop in noise floor in dB can be divided by 6 to see the resolution of the dac. The other is the impulse test on speakers. The tests on the Forte III and the AK6 are the worst I have seen for impulse test results. I guess the people here who say the Klipsch Heritage speakers sound better with the tweeter physically aligned with the mid driver may be on to something. May try his on my Heresy and La Scala. But, not surprised by the listening results. The reviewer used to have his own rag. All hair shirt gear. Art Dudley must have tin ears. All the gear he really praises seems to get a “sample may be broken” when JA measures them. Total distortion and noise generators. The listening with the AK6 away from the corner gave expects results, limited low end. The tests done in the driveway are not as bad as you might think. The standard for speaker testing is an anechoic measurement. No walls. An AL5 might do much better in AD’s driveway. Do not know distance from the speaker to listener, but I think my LS II are better integrated when they are 8 - 10’ away. And 8’ apart. Toed in about half way to listener.
  21. Build my own. Neutrik or Amphenol plugs. Canare, Sommer, or Gotham wire. Costs more than Monoprice but never had a failure.
  22. A friend had a giant pair of Fulton’s 25 years ago. Looked like armoires. He never hooked them up when I was around. He used some Linn Isobaric speakers mostly.
  23. I am in the minority here. Never used bananas. But purchased a Croft OTL that only had banana jacks. Definitely low mass. The British are big fans of banana connectors. I think bananas are the worst. Tinned bare wire is the best. But fiddley if changes are done. Plus going around and retightening the nut from time to time. Speakon are as good. But your amp and speakers do not have these. There is a reason recent manufacture pro amps have Speakon. Installed crimp on spades this year. Good ole USA tinned copper. Cuts connection time by 75% compared to tinned bare wire. And I use Canare Star Quad for internal and speaker wire. This must be Roy Delgado’s choice too. The latest Klipschorns and La Scalas come internally wired with some Audioquest Star quad. Good enough for Roy is good enough for me. Magico uses the Canare Star Quad in their speakers. Their standmount 2 ways costs more than AK-6. So cost is not why. Benchmark sells speaker cables too. Canare Star Quad.
