  1. Hi Marvel, I am like you and when I hear "they say" I want to know who they are. I read about Xover frequencies of 3 way system networks from the book How to Build Speaker Enclosures by Alexis Badmaieff and Don Davis. From what I could find Alexis was the head Acoustic Engineer at Altec Lansing years ago and and what little I could find Don Davis was a producer of a few books on engineering sound equipment this being one of his books among many. https://www.amazon.com/Sound-System-Engineering-Third-Davis/dp/0240808304 From what little I can remember, old timers setting in, it is a complex subject dealing with interactions of frequencies and phase shifts in a crossover network. The book I have is an excellent one that I have went to many times since I bought it, probably around 50 years ago. It is still available and it does not get too technical, just some of the basics. It still can be found used, published 1966.
  2. Take the K-horn for example with original Xover. The bass drops off a lot after 450hz so it was decided to be the bottom crossover frequency. The tweeter used would not take frequencies below 6000hz before self destruction so that was the compromise on the design for it. It pretty much follows the 500hz, 5000hz with the above exceptions or compromises.
  3. Of course not because of drivers or speakers being used but it was considered a good starting point for designers. I forget the hows but I do remember it was recommended way back when research was done on crossover points. It can be a very complex subject to research more if one wants to. It has been years since I read the articles. I do probably still have the papers around somewhere, pack rat.
  4. There was a reference by another member on the 45 tube who I do not wish to respond to. Everyone should make their own decision on what to believe. I love my SE 45 tube amplifier as I am sure that others on this forum that do too. I built my 45 tube amplifier after reading what George Anderson of Tubelab.com had to say about the 45 tube in his design. George is a well respected tube designer on a technical forum. Below is what he has to say about the 45 tube in his amplifier design. I am well aware there are those that disagree as there is on any subject and I respect their opinion especially in that audio is such a subjective subject. I just though I would post my reason for building a 45 tube amplifier and for those like me that have and love their amplifier. I am not saying it is my favorite tube amplifier but I do love the sound and wide soundstage it presents. I do not wish to argue with those that disagree but just remember there is no perfect amplifier for everyone. http://tubelab.com/designs/tubelab-se/applications/ https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubelab/ "The 45 is the cleanest sounding tube that I have tried. These definitely don't all sound the same. There are different sound characteristics between two tubes of identical construction and brand. I am sure these differences are also quite dependent upon personal preference and the type of music being played. My favorite pair of 45's are "Westinghouse Radio tubes" that were made in Canada. These have a "close your eyes and you are there" realism that the others can't match. I have a pair of Tung Sol's that come close.
  5. You cannot change to the 4500 crossover without changing the tweeters as well. The stock tweeters will burn up. They cannot take frequencies below 6,000hz. The old established best crossover frequencies were 500hz and 5000hz for 3 way speakers.
  6. Exactly what I have found as well. The same can be said about amplifiers as well, some more unforgiving. Might be a reason many prefer a conventional speaker that is not so revealing. Most everything will sound alright on less revealing speakers but not spectacular like horns with good recordings. The better recording studios know this and use revealing speakers to know when something is off key.
  7. Thanks, good general reference article. What I have found over my many years is that it is best to find a reviewer you agree with and listen to what he has to say about any audio product. Reviewers disagree as much as the average person on any product being that sound is so subjective. Thanks again for putting this information together and presenting it here. Good starting point on finding the right cartridge.
  8. Where and who wrote this article just for reference, not that I disagree with anything said. On another note, I know there is a price to pay for excellence and some are willing and able to pay the price but the price for what you get in such a simple piece of equipment is way over what I would pay for just a subtle difference in sound quality. If I could even hear the difference. I Would like to think I could but in reality probably not. I think it would take a trained ear to being to tell a noticeable difference between a mid level cartridge and those that cost thousands. IMHO
  9. I still remember a quote from PWK, music consist of dynamics and there is not speaker better at dynamics than the heritage line. I also prefer them because of their low distortion. Admirable traits to build your audio system around.
  10. When bullets are flying everywhere it is best to stay in your foxhole, if possible. That's the way I see it being over 70.
  11. There you go, MC cartridge that works without having to purchase transformer or different phono linestage. One of the reason I purchased myself. I built my phono stage with just an op-amp and adjusted the gain a small amount for said cartridge. Most of the phono linestages one buys now are centered around an op-amp. Some very well know brands are op-amps and the op-amp used is not that great a one at that. But they are well respected by reviewers and customers. I have built and tried discrete J-fet ones and cannot tell a lot of difference myself. Never went down the tube road though. I just use a well known, well respected op-amp and quality parts in my build paying close attention to having low noise. Most op-amp circuits used in phono stages can use multiple op-amps. I would do research before purchasing phono linestage and purchase one that enables swapping op-amps. They will have a holder for op-amp and not be soldered in.
  12. The Spanish flu eventually ran it's course but at a tremendous cost in lives. I would hope we live in a better time and a vaccine will be found. My best friend died in just a week after contracting the virus. Did not go to Dr, thought he could get over it by himself. Was dead wrong. Talked to my Dr about virus last visit and he said he had not lost a patient yet. He uses the antibody plasma and one of two viral drugs. Told me if show symptoms with fever go immediately to emergency room. It appears to me that timing means a lot on survival for old people like me, especially with preexisting conditions like myself.
  13. I have been using the Denon DL-110 for a few years now and for a reasonably priced MC cartridge on a Fluance turntable I have no complaints. Know I am not in the same league as some of you guys but for middle road really good sound.
  14. I remember when the TI board was over $300. Someone will get a bargain on a really good sounding amplifier for little change. I have one myself with linear PS, Torodial transformer.
  15. The back center cover is probably loose. Not uncommon on the K-55M. It can be super glued back in place. How to videos are on youtube. Tap on the cover and see if it rattles. Try to fix if so, nothing to lose trying. Just do not want to get any glue on voice coil. Been addressed here before as well. Google k-55-m rattle fix. Seems others have fixed with silicone. The video I saw years ago used super glue but it involves taking the driver apart. Either way should work. https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/184416-k-55m-midrange-has-a-rattle/
  16. There are those that are satisfied with the AL crossovers. I listened to them in my LaScala's for over 20 years with no complaints. There are notch filters on all the drivers of the AL crossover and that is the reason they are not held in high regard. Depending on money you want to spend you can leave them as is, recap them or buy new AA's. Most seem to think the AA's sound better. I do now have AA's in my speakers.
  17. It saves a technician some time setting up the bias on a build. More of a convenience then necessary. I do like it but the one I bought it only works on certain tubes with the correct octal socket EL34 family of tubes. I learned about it on the Uncle Doug video's on youtube. His specialty is tube amplifiers, mostly guitar amplifiers. There is still some work for tube technicians restoring and repairing the the old tube guitar amplifiers for musicians. Nice that there are still qualified technicians who can repair audiophile tube amplifiers correctly as well.
  18. I bought one of the single tube probes. It does eliminate a couple of steps and added math to find the wattage at idle of your amplifier. https://www.eurotubes.com/store/pc/bias probes.htm
  19. Scored on Ebay for $2. Forgot how great they sound not having listened to them in a long time.
  20. Good choice. The uninformed have a way of thinking more watts has to be better, right? That being said though hard rockers, pop music and rappers will probably favor the PP amplifiers with more power though. For me a good 5 watt amplifier is what I am looking for in SET which is by it's nature class A.
  21. I like single ended and definitely class A but then your choice in music may be entirely different than mine. In general you can expect better vocals with class A SE with decent bass and wonderful soundstage and really good bass and decent vocals with a PP class A/B. Exceptions to every rule depending on quality of amplifier. Do not believe there will be a wrong choice with either one. I like the EL34 family of tubes.
  22. That statement has a lot of truth in it. The fight each other and call each other names in front of the camera and then have martini's together when the day is over.
  23. This thread could get off base and get real nasty real quickly. Remember, electoral college is the topic. The one thing I fear the most for this country is if just one party becomes the norm. History shows any one party country is going to eventual become very corrupt and the people are the ones who will suffer. No party should break the law to stay in power and if they do they should be punished.
  24. My money is on just a bad connection somewhere. Check connections on system and crossover. Clean with deoxit or something similar. Doubtful bad solder joint on crossover but possible.
  25. During my many years when my candidate lost the electoral vote and won the popular vote I was in favor of doing away with it. The opposite when my candidate won. Funny how who wins determines how one thinks. All I can really say is be very careful changing anything our founding fathers decided was best for this country. It has made our Country the best in the world for a reason.
