I use a tone generator app on my phone to test such things so you can truly determine if they work. Assuming source and connections are good this will help narrow down the problem.

Right now knowing those miles is probably worth it. A lot of the cars outrageously priced in the used market are probably already picked over and not worth it.

Back in the day when CDs were new I had several discs that would have crackles. Turned out to actually be my cheap CD player. Not saying it’s your issue, but might be worth a try.

I can believe that. In the early 90s it happened a lot too. Compare a 93 Nissan pickup to a 94. Outside almost identical. Inside not so much. Ford thunderbird and mercury cougar drastically reduced in quality around then too.
