  1. Regarding listener fatigue: Roll the volume back a little after initial setting, your hearing will quickly adjust. Also careful attention to amplification. ( I think you know where this is going....)
  2. @Frzninvt and others, very much appreciate all the helpful feedback. Always wondered about the 3BX DS with impact recovery and the rare legendary 5BX. At least I'm a step above the original series, 1BX and 2BX.
  3. Second all of Tom's comments above. Speaker placement is critical and an inch or a degree or two matter. I spent months moving mine around until I zeroed in on the spot. A tape measure and drafting triangle are useful. A willingness to experiment will be rewarded instead of just plopping them where they look best today and walking away.
  4. Schweet. Recently picked up a Phase Linear Model 1000 Autocorrelator, Noise Reduction System, but have yet to test it, as I'm so enthralled with the dbx.
  5. All the math and charts are handy dandy, but nothing beats some experimentation in your room to zero in on the real value for you. Start with a small value fuse and crank away until it pops, then move up a little.
  6. Jeepers google, Watts = Volts x Amps, so Amps = Watts / Volts Per Ohm's, 1 watt = 2.83 Volts into 8 ohms
  7. Um, if you want the typical ( vintage ? ) Heritage sound, buy an older Heritage speaker. Interesting following the evolution of the Heritage sound over the years, but if you want things to stay the same, things are going have to change.
  8. Listened to all those bands back in the day, but "How Many More Times" ? Hot tip: Music of all genres is fresh, alive, and well in Japan. Thank you, youtube.
  9. And yet here you are, trolling, contributing nothing. Your puzzling hidden link to some odd youtube video was a waste of my time.
  10. Curious to hear if anyone else willing to admit to reliance upon dbx dynamic range expander. From my earliest days of stereo, I was always intrigued by the dbx, but they were very expensive so I could only admire from afar. And I really didn't feel the need as I evolved to an all tube simple analog approach prompted by a chance encounter with a Fisher 500 C receiver. Found a dbx 3BX Series 2 in the AudioMart, but never used, it sat up for a long time. When I started to dabble in multi track, recording local bands I found it useful for the drum track as analog tape always compressed the drums. When I started my second stereo life all the music was mp3. ( I'm sure high res digital is nice, but where do those files come from ? ) Mp3s are fine for casual listening on earbuds, but were flat and lacking on the room stereo. Then I remembered the dbx and plugged it into the system. Now I can't listen without it. For me the advantages of the dbx dynamic range expander are many: One is the subtle yet noticeable sweetening of the sound that make mp3s listenable for me. But more importantly it allows easy adjustment, compensation for the sound level. Depending on the type of music and recording, some material is very high level and compressed, while others are too low level. ( This should be apparent to all, ever been blasted out of the room by a song selection way louder than the previous ? ) Another advantage is about 20 db of noise reduction between songs. Finally, the LED display is the coolest thing ever: the LEDs bounce away from 0 db center level where no LEDs are lit, and this easily facilitates setting of the threshold level where downward, upward expansion take place, one nudges the slider for minimal activity of the bouncing 2 color LEDs. TLDR: The dbx is an indispensable part of my system, the secret sauce that one seldom finds talked about.
  11. Awaiting listening impressions for various types of fuses
  12. Yes, exactly. Never paid much attention to voltage rating, but it seems most fuses commonly available are rated for 250 V. Perhaps more importantly, use fast blow for most applications, slo-blo for the power line fuse.
  13. My experience with fuses is 1 amp 250V is not sufficient for my listening on LaScala or Heresy, and I do not think I listen loudly at all. Currently use 1.5 amps speaker and 2 amps tube fuses and seldom have a problem, only popped once when my new tubes were settling in, I've heard this is common as loose particles burn off within new tubes. Fuses are available in 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2 amps and onward, so very easy to find the sweet spot for your application. Always best to have a number on hand, no one likes to have a listen cut short by loss of a fuse.
  14. Jeepers, your buyer was fickle and you were very generous to take back. My Tascam 40-4 always reeled slowly at first then sped up and I considered this a feature, not a bug. It worked well for me back in the day, but I let it sit for many years, and it did not wake up well. Thankful my interested buyer picked it up anyway. I had no trouble selling my stash of 10" reel tapes, many recorded, and about a dozen unrecorded.
  15. Sand is miraculous and economical, and free if you can find a good spot in the woods. I've also used steel shot gun shot ( don't think lead is commonly available these days ), but that can get pricey quickly.
  16. Proud recent recipient of a pair of Dave A's Walnut LMAHL freestanding tweeter horns for my DE-120's, and just blown away by the improvement to my sound. Don't walk, run....
  17. Everyone had one of these back in the day, and many "brands" were just modded or rebranded 650s. I had one stock, and then bought one with all the POOG mods, which I believe just affected the analog output stage. Neither could approach the analog record player. Fast forward 30 years: Got tired of flipping the same five records as I became a lazier DJ, and finally quit altogether, and sold all my records and player. After a 5 year hiatus, I came back and started playing mp3s, as that is where the new music is delivered now. Someone took pity on my old phone and suggested a Topping E30 DAC, which finally made the digital listenable for me. Unless you still favor your Radio Shack TRS-80 computer for some odd reason, there is no way stuff from the 80's can compare to present day tech.

  20. I also find the "peanut gallery" comment most troubling for this forum, especially considering the source and recipient.
  21. Does not take much to poke the bear around here.
