  2. SS vs Tubes. I don't think that this has even been discussed here before. Lets see how many posts this thread gets.
  3. Let me gues. The wife made him do it. He will sell these, but Bose cubes and agree with the wife that the cute little cubes do sound better and she was right. He will then live the rest of his life whipped by her...
  4. Mark, I run a Klipsch SW15 that I used with my K Horns and now with my B&W's, both of which have 15" woofers. The sub definately adds to the mix. I have it tuned so that the music just goes lower, not louder. My big difference with the sub just happened recently. I used my Behringer DEQ2496 to set my room EQ. It will not adjust the bass so I noted the dips and adjusted manually. (I know, don't add too much boost or it can tax your amp). The sub is not truely seamless. No boominess at all. The Velodyne DD subs have this feature (built in bass eq).
  5. Really interesting thread. I have heard fostex (spelling?) drivers before. Very nice. They were a little harsh in the system that I heard but that was probably somehting else. They sounded great with a tube CD player. Again, probably just this system and driver. What is going on with the photos? It is really hard to read the thread. Are VGA photos doing this or are these pictures really large?
  6. Agreed. Very good tube and SS equipment exists. I like SS because its easy. Flick a switch, no waiting an hour for everything to warm up, no replacing tubes. I have a friend who spends $1800 every 3 years to retube his VTL amps. Ouch! His system sounds awesome, but no better than my Musical Fidelity and Bryston equipment (IMHO). In any event, go listen to some tube equipment on Klipsch. It mates very well. But don't expect a miracle to happen. The difference is not as much as you think. If you are using high quality SS you probably will not notice a difference.
  7. Same here. I went the tube route, souded great but was a pain dealing with vintage tubes. After trying a QSC amp I realized that good SS is as good as tubes without the headaches. I then went with higher end SS equipment. Higher end SS is really nice.
  8. $20 to add a low flow panaflow fan from Digikey. It is inaudible. The stock fan is very quiet too. By DLP TV's fan is louder. Great amp. I considered picking this one up and then came to my senses as I already have one in storage. A friend of mine has a pair of 300 wpc tube amps (VTL I believe). I am trying to convince him to buy a high power QSC for the summer (He has electrostats and B&W's).
  9. Not going to cut it. I tried the QSC 3202 (or something like that) at 700 wpc (8 ohms) and the Brystons did better at less rated power. Our guy here heard this system and it was better than Heresys and he wants everyone on the Klipsch forum to know. He needs to do it right, just the way he heard it. I'd say he should go for the Levinson 33's a few pages back on this thread. These should work too (but he should buy them new): http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?ampstran&1177863518 Now, excuse me, I'm on my way to a Ford dealer to explain to them that a Ferrari will outperform a Mustang GT.
  10. You are looking at N802's. The new 802D cannot be touched for under $9K or so (list is $12,000). The N802's listed at $8,000 and $6,000 is a good deal if they are NOS and a bad deal if they are used. Comparing N802's to Heresys is not fair. Its like comparing the K Horn to the Heresy. I have N801's (essentially the same thing that you are looking at but with 15" woofers). If you think that the Heresys sounded harsh, the B&W's will be relentless with the wrong source or a lack of power, so make sure that you get all of the other components that these speakers require. Your Lexicon amp and Rotel processor are not going to cut it. Start looking at Mark Levinson, Krell, Classe, Bryston, McIntosh and higher end Musical Fidelity equipment. Figure on spending at least $10,000 on a new preamp and amps, if not more. You are going to need a lot of really clean power, like 500 + wpc. I am running 800 wpc at 4 ohms. Try to find an amp that doubles in power every time impedance is cut in half. You will also want to get a source to match. You may get the deal done for $18,000 to $20,000. Probably more. Your average system with these speakers is about $25,000. Oh yea, you will also want to add dedicated circuits in your listening room to supply your amps. In any event, congrats on your pending purchase and let us know how it turns out! Your salesperson is going to love you when you are done.

  13. Which B&W's are you getting? Great speakers. Be ready to spend some serious money on other related equipment. Lots and lots of it.
  14. Phooey on that action!!! Therm... I'm several hours from you (Knoxville, TN) C'mon over & listen to the flagship before you plunk 5K on anything. For a bit more you can have something that will make you wet your drawers (and you can audition them first too) The only time I thought the B&W's rivalled the Summit's was when 802D's were driven by the most incredibly expensive amplification you could imagine - $30,000 Mark Levinson mono blocs. Which ML amps were they? There is a pair of 33H's for sale locally. I would guess that you heard the 33's, the bigger brother.
  15. Everything seems to get bashed on the internet. You may see so much Klipsch bashing because if they are set up wrong (wrong electronics) they can sound very harsh. But if they are set up with the right electronics, they are very detailed and dynamic and a greta value. I bought KLF 30's 10 years ago and hated them. I had them set up with bad electronics and they were really harsh. If they had better electroncs I'm sue they would have sounded better. Good luck to you.
  16. Klipsch SW sub??? Do you have a KSW15 or RSW15? The KSW15 is alow end sub,the RSW15 is one of the best Klipsch subs ever released and a very solid sub. The Velodyne DD15 and 18 are on a whole new level, above the RSW15. First the larger DD series Velo subs have extension well below the RSW or RT subs. Second the motor used with the servo control in a sealed box combine to give you a level of tauntness and controll you cannot have with even the RSW15(for a classic non servo sub theb RSW15 is close). And with the SMS you can fine tune the sub to perform in the most linear way in YOUR room. Yes the DD15 is worthy, and a top contender. Since the price is real you cannot ignore the JL Audio f112 and f113,these are also on the same level. And cost a bit less. With more output down deep. The SW15 was the Klipsch top of the line powered sub in the early 90's. It has a 15" woofer and a 15" passive radiator on the back. I just ran pink noise and an RTA and dialed it in with my DEQ2496. It blended in very well. I have it comming in at about 65 to 70 hz and using the pink noise it integrates very well.
  17. I just put my Klipsch SW15 back in my system. I am running B&W N801's and have the sub crossed over at about 50 Hz. It really makes a nice difference. I have no complaints about the SW15 but I keep hearing that the Velodyne DD15 series with their eq's are so great. Are they that good? Will it add anything? Thanks, Chris
  18. I used my chainsaw this weekwend to fell over 20 trees, my wife is in the other room watching the academy awards while I'm drinking a beer and about to throw a few filets on the BBQ, so I feel comfortable about this. What is this thing called again? A swiffer duster?
  19. The unit I have for sale was made in Hungary. Please tell me more about the Blackgate mod to the power supply. John Here is an excerpt from an old thread by LeoK (It's really easy to do): I found my response. Search since apr 04 for the title: "Thanks dubai2000, 963SA pwr cap" here is the mod text: ---------------------------------------- 'Open your 963SA and on the right side is the power supply board that is totally seperated from the reast of the unit. The board has three screws holding it in and two power wires that unclip by hand. Remove the board and remove the biggest capacitor and replace whith the BG VK150/350v cap and make sure that you replace it whith the arrow on each cap the same and your all set. This is as easy as cap mods get but if you can't solder or don't feel comfortable doing so....bring it to someone who can.' ---------------------------------------- Leo
  20. Thanks. I was going to skip the 5100 but it was just too nice. The more I look at them the more I think that I will find a place for each piece and keep all of them. I really have not seen very much vintage equipment in this kind of shape.
  21. Add a $25 Blackgate capacitor to the power supply and you have a $225 giant killer. Great value for the money.
  22. I have had some very mint but nasty smelling speakers before. Put them in a well ventilated area away from any smoke. It takes a long time but the smell will completely go away. It just takes a long time.
