  1. (twitchy index finger. maybe I'll find something useful to put here....hmm. nothing comes to mind.)
  2. ---------------- What is a Variac? ---------------- Variac = Variable AC. Once again, someone stating the obvious.
  3. once again. At least one "supergroup" survived intact.
  4. If it is anything like what I heard at GaryMD's, you are in for a treat. The Bluberry and (Dynaco Mark III or) VRD combo is just magic. As you may have read, there was a similar gathering at Gary's recently. The undisputed champeen was the NOSvalved III out of a four way match. But I think that match was maybe tilted to compatibility issues that just happened to work, especially with vinyl. Perhaps the NOSIII is a sleeper! Anyway, have fun.
  5. Solid state will sound better with KG4 than Quartet. Quartets are better for HT, not so great for everyday 2C. KG4 lacks something that Quartets offer. Quartets have higher highs to the point of ringing but better bass than the KG4 can reach. I have had both and now own neither. If you have an Academy, Quartets are a perfect blend.

  7. ---------------- Q: Is that water damage on the back? Thank you. answered on: Feb-08-05 A: We recently moved to a new house and the speaker has been in storage, but as far as I know it does not have water damage. Thanks. ---------------- ---------------- That is MY question posted on the auction. Either the seller does not know what water damage looks like, or he is doing a bad job of letting the potential buyer "see" the speaker's bad side just as a "caveat emptor" or feigned ingnorance.
  8. Delivered an eBay item yesterday. I should have taken my camera. They guy was at level three with his dream system. I cannot remember the name of the amps as I was not taking notes. The speakers, however, were Quad ESL electrostatics totally rebuild with custom frames. The amps were a British pedigree (not Quad) EL34. The pre was a customized tube something. The turntable was the stuff you dream about with the "best designed" arm in existence. NO CD! Just a retired lawyer in vinyl heaven. I literally put my nose perpendicular to the frame of the ESL and heard music with depth that was surreal, NOT STEREO! His basement was flooded with vinyl and his adherence to analogue as the best medium was unshakable and with living proof. I have never seen such an impressive spread. It was audio bliss and about 1 mi. from my house. His Eico (pronounced "eye-co") HF-60 amps were in for modification). I may have another modifier lead for you guys soon, if you are interested. EDIT: The eBay item was a lowly tubed AM tuner for a friend of his that had won it on eBay.
  9. Not bad for a 62 year old rock icon, huh? And "hats off" to the production team. Class act.
  10. ---------------- I used a roll of toilet paper. ---------------- A whole roll will clog the sound.
  11. Doesn't anyone use the internet for more than the Klipsch Forum?
  12. Thanks for the update. I must admit, you gotta have either a love for vintage audio, a lot of space, a tin ear, or all three to put up with the deficient sound quality that is in much of this old audio gear. There is nothing like great sound, whether it is found in new or vintage audio components. But to be so enamoured with audio history that you are willing to commit valuable space and time to items that are so sub-par is beyond my understanding. The Shorthorn may be cool and collectible, but it stops there. Am I wrong?

  16. Every time I see those threadliners with topics like "Dead ProMedia," I feel sorry for those guys. Hey, just run your sound card output to a great amp and Heritage speakers and ditch the ProMedia stuff altogether. Appreciate two channel. "Old school" works every time.

What experts?
  18. The Fisher 400 is one of the nicest. I understand the simplicity of the circuit and short leads make it especially desireable. But how does it SOUND? If it is like mine, sound will be clean and open. You will definitely get find out what the "Fisher sound" is like. There was probably an optional second console with the other speaker either already discarded, sold, in another part of the house, or never bought by the owenr. Proabably the latter. Nice find.
  19. thebes, get that thing in for overhaul soon. God forbid that you should trance out (watching the twins, that is) and that same tube socket go crazy (depending on whether it was the tube or the socket or just seating connection). I still remember that hum then the hiss as I called to Larry and he pointed to the glowing EL34. Did you reseat/rotate all the tubes just to clear away any possible oxidation? You gotta get that Marantz in for a physical soon. Don't play with fire! We would all mourn the loss of that amp! I write this as I wax about my ST-70 that I told you about. I got about two months of enjoyment out of that amp, using it sparingly. Then I fell asleep while listening to it late at night and woke up to a loud hum over the speaks. It melted a cap (original stock) and I sold it as-is because I was too cheap to fix it.
  20. Some folks will pay out the proverbial nose for vintage equipment in spotless condition. "Condition" has always been a "worth" driver, be it any antique. If you ever look at watches, the same holds true. So, no matter what the piece is, if it is qualified as mint, or, even better, "pristine" (caution on the definition of "pristine"), the value can double or better. Gary's zebra Cornwalls, for example, could easily sell for $2K due to their original owner status and impeccable condition. The only exception to the rules, as I have observed, is rarity:condition. Rare items can be sold in lesser condition at higher prices. An adage in sales is that anything is worth whatever the market will bear. But the "holy grail" of sound is not found in name alone. A Sunday afternoon at Gary's proved that to me.
  21. ---------------- ...What part of the world are you guys in? Oh yeah, duh, east coast.lol ---------------- Well, as you can tell from the pictures, Gary lives in the basement. Thebes' Marantz is, well, something to look at. Since he found it in the bottom part of a console, I think it would be safe to suggest that Marantz did not design this to be looked at. BUT from a retro point of view and it's pedigree, it is worthy of visual prominence. Despite its timecapsule-like condition, it ended my curiosity about the reason for all the praise this amp gets. The staging presented by the Marantz/Khorn is almost better than live. The McIntosh lived up to its praise as well. Now I have to say that these two amps need to be segregated from Gary's VRD's in that they both are in natural condition. I believe that thebes' Marantz will benefit most from restoration as there are authorized McIntosh service stickers on the 240, leading me to assume that it has had, at least, been benched in recent history. Once the Marantz gets a possible NOSjob, it may rue the day. (You can't argue the VRD's stature even against an 8b and 240. It (they) definitely did more things better than the other three. Raising your price, Craig?) Then there is the Sony TA-N77ES. I may just as well have worn a plaid suit to the ball. But I will say this, I think it won the weight category. Which hints to what it did best - BASS. The Sony never bottomed out, went tubby or flat, even though Gary suggested it, being SS, did not need to warm up! Larry and I listened to some classical. I could be biased, but I THINK the highs started to smooth out shortly after Gary and thebes stepped out of the room . I think, though it's hard to tell, that Larry was impressed with how low the Khorns can go with a good SS amp. I would put the Sony in with demanding cone speakers any day and be happy. But the horns definitely favor good tubes. Finally, let me say what a gentleman and lady Gary and his wife are. They insisted on being the complete hosts. Now I don't want imply that just anyone gets special treatment, but we were surely grateful. Frankly, I think Gary's system just need validation .
