sputnik Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 We have a pair of red-tail hawks nesting outside our bedroom window - this the third year they've nested here. Here's the first pic of the new mom with one of this year's babies. Quote
JerolW Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I've got a Coopers Hawk living in the trees in my yard. jerol Quote
jacksonbart Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I have a small green man only about 3 feet in height who appears to levate to about face level in my backyard with a green helmet and has a 357 magnum handgun. He keeps calling me Dumb Dumb. I wouldn't mind except for the 357 magnum. Quote
sputnik Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Here is mom with all three babies. In previous years they only had two. Quote
sputnik Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Breakfast. They're tearing away at some fresh meat in the nest. Quote
sputnik Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Mom has harsh words with a paparazzi jerk. Quote
sputnik Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Here is a shot of both parents shortly after the eggs hatched. We had tough weather this spring - late snow storms, high winds, and hail storms. We'd look outside during the harsh weather and see the mom hunkered down and protecting the nest with her wings (I assume it was the mom but I've heard that the male will also sit the nest while the female hunts.) But in the picture you can see how rough it was for the mom by comparison. Quote
Brac Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Do Loons count, they prey on fish. These guys have been hanging around my dock for a couple weeks you can see one of the babys on the moms back. The other baby is not in this photo. Pics would be better if the sun would ever come back. Quote
Brac Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Or this guy who comes buy for lunch, usally drops a piece of fish for the dogs. Quote
Guest " " Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 awesome during the colder months we have an owl that hangs out in the area and a falcon who makes meals out of the birds that show up to feed on the local bird feeders. Quote
JL Sargent Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 Our place has always been home to Turkey, Redtail Hawks and Barred Owls. But this year has been special. Saw a Bald Eagle and a Great Horned Owl on the driveway here so far this year. Quote

Not a bird of prey but almost as big, and just as cool! Quote
hobie1dog Posted July 1, 2009 Posted July 1, 2009 This one showed up on the back deck awhile ago.] Quote
sputnik Posted July 2, 2009 Author Posted July 2, 2009 Hobie, nice shot. Is that a sharp-shinned hawk? Looks like it let you get close. These red-tails are pretty wary. Brac, No loons here but we get bald and golden eagles showing up in the fields around every fall. I never thought I'd say this on the internet but nice looking woodpecker there. Quote
customsteve01 Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 We have Hawks around here and an occasional bald eagle. We have tons of birds living in back of the house. For some reason we get lots of vultures in this area too. Its pretty creepy looking out and seeing 10 or so vultures hanging out on top of out silo's. Do bats count as bird's or prey? Quote
convicted21 Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Awesome pictures guys !! I did get to watch a pair of red tails grow up last year not near as close up as Sputnik though. We mostly get deer and fox through the area im in, what I wouldnt give to have a experience like Sputnik's ! Quote
