BigStewMan
i spent part of my youth living in the mojave desert. sr-71 would take off from lockheed plant in palmdale and fly directly over my house. it was always a treat to watch it fly. Islander
Thanks for the link. I've read that a few times before and it's still a great read. One of the SR-71 pilots wrote a book about flying the plane, called Sled Driver, since "the Sled" was one of the Blackbird's nicknames and the pilots were sometimes called sled drivers. I think that link was an excerpt from the book. Unfortunately, the book is out of print and used copies go for around $300 on Ebay.
nannerneck
When I was doing my two month rotation at Mildenhall England? Back in 1987, they had 2 SR-71's that always had drip pans under them, I was told that was normal due to the high temp. The skin of the aircraft was intended to expand. They always got a base comanders escort before take off. The engine runups and tests were unreal to wittness, that were in a seperate building. russ69
Well, I'm not a pilot but I have sat in a live SR-71. It was a pleasure to work with these fabulous airplanes. Most Lockheed folks will say it's their favorite. Thanx, Russ
