picky
From 1983. I wonder if many were built? It's only 31.4" tall: A bookself speaker.
twheats1
31.4 x 26 x 24 and 205 lbs. It would have to be one heck of a bookshelf!
djk
TAD doesn't make that specifiec horn anymore, but they show up on eBay from time to time. A new version of the Klipsch K5 horn on an anti-diffraction cabinet.
Marvel
This is from a guy on DIYAudio who was building his own (and selling them), from this year...

Marvel
Nice work... he used a CNC machine to make the horns.
twheats1
Marvel those look great. I wonder if they are less expensive than the 850,000 yen the Pioneers were?
Marvel
The approx. $9,500 is a bit steep. The drivers themselves are pricey.
TheEAR
Marvel, The speakers in your pics are GORGEOUS! Shows the builder took his time and invested the time well. And I am sure they sound at least as good as they look if the crossover is preoperly designed. TAD drivers are first class quality and performance ,they have nothing to fear from JBL Pro units. TAD and JBL drivers in many aspects are very close.
Invidiosulus
Those are really nice looking. I bet I could make some.

Invidiosulus
Anybody know what measurements one would need to make one of those horns for a K-55 or other 1" driver? As in, how to figure the curve or size of the radial vanes? -Josh
fini
Josh, go to the thrift store, get a large wooden salad bowl, cut it like a pie into thirds... It does look fun to build, huh? If you had a lathe...
Marvel
Those aren't available from TAD anymore, and listed for over $2300 each. Widget may have drawings for them, and you can reach him through the Lansing Heritage site. OR search for Widget on this site, since he posted here fro a short while. Email might still reach him. Here are the clone project pages, with more pics: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/multi-way/80068-tad-th4001-clone-project.html or try this before geocities is really gone: http://www.geocities.jp/arai401204/Horn_Page/Horn_Speakers.html Bruce A480.pdf
Invidiosulus
Thanks, I have plans in my head for a router jig that would make these. -Josh
Invidiosulus
Here's a sketch of one method of making the flared top and bottom of the horns. The jig could be attached to a hole in the back of the laminated boards or to a seperate piece attached to the work bench. Either way the jig would pivot around the rear bolt allowing for the curved face to be cut with the router. The jig would be shaped in such a way that the distance maintained from the workpiece would cause the correct curve to be cut. -Josh
Marvel
Thanks I thought you might like it...The jig looks good, and would be more consistent than using a belt sander (as I have seen other use)
