oldenough
Couldn't resist this for $5....in lovely condition, and everything works. Built in 5 watt tube amp. I guess it was the 60's portable system, but weighing in at 60 pounds portable don't come to mind....phew...[]

Mallette
Never seen that model Ampex, but the name is all you need to know. If it's quarter track it's a HECKUVA good find as they built no crap. If it's half track, still really cool if somewhat less useful. If it has a "head out" you can use an NAB preamp though they aren't all that easy to find. Here's a link to a Bottlehead Seduction mod for NAB EQ. Word has it that it's awesome... Dave
oldenough
Hi Dave, yes it is quarter track stereo, there is not a "head out" on it, just "head set" and "ext amp". Sounds pretty good, I will have to dig out some tapes and give it a work out.
LarryC
Looks like an Ampex 970 from around 1960, pictured in this Wiki article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampex.

Growing up we had a "portable" superscope all in one reel to reel that was the size of a medium suitcase and it must have weighed in at 100 pounds .... but it had a handle on it thus it was portable. I still have a Tandberg "portable" reel to reel that may be one of the best sounding pieces of audio gear I have ever owned. Josh

JJkizak
I purchased an Ampex 1/4" deck in the 60's with dual capstan drive (and tubes) I think for about $400.00. It did work perfect until the capstan drive belt disolved. The round 1/8" diameter belt lost all it's compression and was permantly stretched. I found a replacement somewhere. I wish I still had this machine. JJK
Marvel
I wish I still had this machine. We've ALL used that line before.
