BEC
We had a lightning strike nearby last night. Actally hit a tree near my brother's house which is about 300 feet from my house. The power surge got a bunch of stuff here. A DSS receiver, a computer, cordless phone base station, 37 inch LED TV, some network stuff (that I know of so far). Anyway, the lightning hit a tree. Tree shapnel (large enough to seriously injure or kill someone) went as far as 200 feet. Some pictures:

jason str
Hope nothing came through the house. Thats one hell of a antenna you had there. As long as nobody got hurt you came out ok. On the bright side now you have extra firewood for next year.

He said that he thought the house was coming apart and that it was one of the loudest noises he has ever heard.

Jeff Matthews
Kind of amazing. I wonder what the physics is behind that. I can understand burning and even a convulsion, but did that lightning actually cause propulsion?
Coytee
Amazing, glad all are ok. Jeff, I've always understood the lightning takes the tree from ambient temperatures to a zillion degrees in an instant, causing it to explode and instantaneously catch fire. I certainly might br 100% wrong.
