looks like i will be grilling for about 30 people on the 4th! got any ideas how to do this cheaply??

^^^ Like the Hot Dog option, but I'd do Polish Sausage (Kielbasa) instead of Brats.

OR, find Hamburger in bulk on Sale; the higher fat content is better for flavor & cooks off.

Whole Chickens (cut up yourself & save) & inexpensive cuts of Pork Chops in lieu of Ribs; my dog loves it when we have ribs: he gets more to eat than we do.

Chuck-eye steaks (marinated in fridge at least overnight) in Lieu of Rib-eye.

All good ideas, now I'm hungry.

For the burgers, mix in some Italian bread crumps, eggs and seasoning, quicker to cook and taste better. Even better 50% ground beef 50% hot sausage, and there perfect. IMO

Whole pork loins are cheaper than pork chops and you slice yourself and no waste from bones, all meat.

Sausage of any kind is one of my favorites, in beer and onions are good especially if finished directly on the grill, (just my taste anyway)

Chicken is always good but takes a while to cook.

Most people like potato salad and it's cheap to make.

Great advice dtel. I always make it a point to grill on the coldest day of the year and the hottest day of the year. I guess that makes me avid?

Excluding the peak of a hurricane everyday is grilling/smoking weather in the South, compared to those - temps way up North in the winter.

Yes you are an avid griller then, on the hottest days you could almost put the grill in the sun and slow cook without lighting it !

well i spent 240 bucks on a bunch of stuff. to include paper plates and forks and what not. but aside from condiments and all i got 10 lbs of hamburger, 4 lbs of sausage, about 100 hotdogs (all different kinds), 2 whole chickens, a whole pork shoulder, 5 lbs of bacon, 5 lbs of cheese, and i cant remember the rest. think i will need to get some more hamburger and chicken, but i think that should do.

Here's a crowd pleaser. I have often cut up a fresh pineapple and grilled it to rave reviews. Now, find some of that coconut flavored rum and soak the pineapple in it before grilling. Even better! The best part is you can drink the left over rum which now has pineapple and coconut flavor infused. It's a win win all around.

Hey Dtel.....if you like hot sausage in your burgers, then have you tried adding jalapeno sauce? (The green hot sauce) You can do it when you pack the burgers and let it marinate over night, but I recommend adding it on top when you grill because you can get a nice hot caramel if you do it right. I picked that up from Picky in Detroit, except he likes to use HOT sauce.

Never tried that but I sure will, Thanks I will try it. I tried marinating some chicken with chopped jalapeno's and some of the juice once, it was really a good taste but not overly hot, I was a little surprised it was not hotter.

I like hot but I don't think I can handle some of Picky's sauce from his collection, some of the sauce out now is past hot, there dangerous.

my newest old weber. this one was made in 2003. i finally opened it and put her together. she will be used on the 4th of july for the first time.

Very nice, the Webers are really nice, and the price has sure gone up over the years, I was surprised when I looked at them last.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have an 80lb pig marinating in my kitchen. It's going in a La Caja China cooker tomorrow.

I have always lusted over one of those cookers....you must have a rather large sink!!

It's in a big cooler. I found the la caja used on CL for $125 and have been using it for 3 years. Since this is a Klipsch forum, I have a pair of Cornwalls in the garage to accompany the cook on the driveway.

I grill and smoke meat a lot, especially during spring/summer/fall. For smoking I use a GrillPro charcoal fueled smoker probably 3 times a month. I bought this a few years ago at Menards and it has held up well. I generally use mesquite or hickory w/ a little bit of apple chips sprinkled in.

For convenience purposes I have a gas grill (on average I use this 4-5 nights a week). For Father's Day (my excuse) I just picked up a new Weber Genesis E-310 at Lowes. And when I grill I don't just do the meat, I throw everything on there, veggies and fruit (usually fresh cut pineapple). My wife isn't much of a cook, besides she's chasing a 2.5 and 1.5 year old around all day so I can't blame her for not wanting to cook. And I really enjoy grilling after a long hard day of work. And quite honestly I'd rather prepare my food the way I like it as opposed to eating out at a nice restaurant.

Johnny, I think your family and my (little) family need to get together and do a smoking/grilling party!

Sounds good we need to do that. FYI my condo is right on the other side of the river where they set off the Mishawaka fireworks. Literally a couple hundred feet away. Ill have the best seat in the house on my deck!
