Did I get a good deal/upgrade?

I recently bought 2 RF-3s, 1 RC-3, and 2 RS-3s manufactured in 2000 for $470.  The speakers are in perfect working condition with perfect covers, and all accessories and manuals.  I bought them from the original owner.  These are replacing 2 VF-35s, 1 VC-25, and 2 VS-14s that I purchased new in 2009.  My questions are, did I get a good deal and is this a clear upgrade?  I think yes on both counts, but wanted confirmation from the experts.  I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  Thanks!

Thanks for the replies and the welcome.  One more question.  I actually have a 7.2 set up.  The two speakers I didn't replace are my front highs which are 2 KS-14s that I purchased new less than a year ago.  Would you recommend trying to find 2 more RS-3s to replace these with or does that not really matter?  Thanks again!

Mains is questionable. However I would never mix and match series. So you went in the right direction my friend! Enjoy!

I would have to disagree with that statement.

It is interesting to see how a few years ago the RF 3 was recognized as solid performer speaker, it was even seen as the best bang for your buck, yet today it is " questionable". Most people have said that if there was a short coming with the RF3 it would the bass, most of the time this was due to crappy receiver being used, but it is nothing that a good sub can not fix. The RC 3 was usually the weak part of that set up.

You got a great set up at a bargain price.

If you have any desire to upgrade I would recommend to replace the RC 3 with a RC 7 and you will be set.

Coincidentally, I have an RC-7 for sale, and close to you. :)

I saw that RC 7 with DeanG cross over upgrade in the for sale section.

One mistake I made was to buy one of those upgraded RC 7, the biggest mistake I ever made was to sell it.

Once you have a DeanG cross over upgrade, you know what you were missing. The upgrade was well worth it

hey falcon please read it carefully. He asked if he upgraded. From what I've read the vf-3x series are fantastic speakers. So the main as an upgrade may be questionable, however the center and surrounds will be for sure over the much smaller icon stuff. But the rf-3 are a smaller speaker than what he came from.

The RF-3's bass response performs better at higher levels.  A sub will do just fine for levels lower and movies, but music playback - the RF-3 shines when the volume level is higher.

That is a true.

Do not misunderstand what I said, by no means the bass is bad on the RF3 but if you really really had to come up with something about it, the bass is what most people have brought up. I never had any issues with the bass on mine, but I do not use a wall mart receiver either.

I' m looking to argue but let me point out something here. I understand the question and your response to it being that the RF 3 is a questionable upgrade over the VF35 due to the fact that you " heard " that the vf 3x serie is a fantastic speaker.

Have you "listen" to them and compare them them side by side, or is your only point of reference is the difference in "size" of the speakers?

While, I don' t disagree that the vf35 is a good speaker, in my opinion calling the RF 3 a questionable upgrade is incorrect.

I base my statement on the fact that , including owning both speakers, running them in the same room with the same equipment and listening to the same material, I actually heard them.

I owned the VF 35 and 36 floor standers.  Both of the Icon towers were excellent speaker and had a nice HF response as long as the volume did not get to high.  These tower performed music and movies well compared to my Reference speakers.  I liked them so much, that I kept the VF 35 and sold the rest off for the Reference gear.

i was basing it off hat I have read from forum members here. He asked for an opinion and I gave him one. Never heard either towers but heard both the center and surrounds before. So that's why I said questionable. Didn't say it was fact. If you've owned both then that gives you a better perspective for sure however it's still all an opinion.

Are you liking your reference deal, and do you still think the RF-3's are an upgrade over the VF-35's?
