The Subwoofer is dead as we know it

OK not to change the topic, but changing to topic anyway, I have question.  I still have a business account with Alibaba that has a good history, so I am able to make deals with sellers.  A company called Fante Electric Company makes speakers and subwoofers of every variety, from titanium tweeters to Piezo tweeters to subwoofer drivers.  They have a 32 inch subwoofer driver.

https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/16000-Watt-32-Inch-Subwoofer-PD32150B_60589689045.html?spm=a2700.8443308.0.0.suSrMD

8000 Watts RMS, 16000 max.  They sell them for $850 to $900 apiece.  With shipping at 100 pounds, you are looking at $1,100. They will send me two evaluation examples for $900 including shipping.  So for $450 apiece is it worth  grabbing a pair of 32 inch subwoofer drivers, or is this so certainly junk that it is not worth it?  Knowing  me, the idea of my gian subwoofer with 2 32-inch drivers is intriguing.

I remember hearing about these 30" Electro voice woofers growing up. They used them in a speaker they called the Patrician. Never saw or heard one. But I also remember vaguely hearing that they were hard to control and caused intermodulation distortion(?)

I just ordered his plans and sent him an email asking for a little advice.  Thanks.  This looks like it might be a much better approach.  If he responds, I will post what he has to say.

Bill is very active on avsforum.com on the DIY Speakers and Subs sub-forum.  His designs are very highly regarded and he often interacts with people over there giving opinions and offering advice.  I have a feeling he will work with you.  :emotion-21:

The quick answer, is nobody knows yet.  At least not in anything I've read.

I would suggest you work with a known audio distributor so if something goes wrong you've got an American company which will warranty the product.

Point in case was a couple of years ago Parts-Express was selling 18" sub drivers all over the place which ended up having some major problems.  I think there were some quality control issues stemming from the manufacturer in China.  PE stopped selling the drivers until the QC problems were addressed and of course they warrantied all the defective drivers.

If you want to be the first kid on the block to try the 32" sub drivers (which sounds cool BTW) I would run over to (you know where ) the AVSforum.com site and run it by those guys.  They are the crazies who LOVE that sort of thing.  You might even find one of them who will collaborate to design an enclosure and figure out what amp will work.  The bigger the better over there, it's where the real crazy sub guys hang out!

Some of the Electro-Voice EV 30W  have sold for as little as $400 on eBay.  I have just been waiting for a pair.  There is a pair pending on usaudiomart for $1800, but that is a bit rich for me.  Lots of solds around $800, not sure if they are pairs.  I would like a pair for an open baffle speaker.

That's a good write up and request for info, but you posted it in the wrong forum.  That is the forum for home sub-woofers commercially made.  You are asking about a sub woofer driver.

Post the exact same thing in the DIY Speakers and Subs sub-forum.  I think you will get a LOT of interest and activity.

@SWL it has not arrived yet and i could return it.  Any reason to upgrade.  It was so cheap it really did not matter.

Yeah kind of, the normal ones start clipping at like half a volt.  The HD version is much better in this regard.

All this talk.  My son in law and I built a Cinema F-20 in a weekend.  All he has left to do is route the edges and veneer it.

I am very glad for him and hope that he enjoys it.  A different trajectory than mine, but I am always delighted to see people succeed in what they want to do.

@vasubandu I saw where your thread is now on the DIY Speakers and Subs section avsforum.com.  Good job.  When you get to the nitty-gritty of what enclosure, what tuning, how much power is needed etc those are the guys who can give you expert advice.  They are the ones who turn their attics into giant sub woofers!

The last I saw there were about 25 comments, including some of the heavy hitters I expected and one I did not expect.

Do you know who Mark Seaton is?  I find it very impressive he has taken an interest in your project.   He is not an amateur like most of the guys there, he is not even an average professional, he is one of THE top pros when it comes to those really large hi-output speakers.
