oops. When I looked at your post the first time, the text area was just blank. Guess you were editing it at that time. Thought the post title as an invitation to argue, then a blank page was pretty good. I posted a blank page in response.

Considering the tendency for internet posts and threads to all to easily become flame wars, that part is a point well taken. I would also want to mention, in a non blaming way, that I find myself uncomfortable with the image of a Downe's child the poster creators use to make the point. I have worked in relationship to several Downe's folks and have a tender place for them in my heart. There are even times, I wish that I were more like them, instead of being the cynical and skeptical person that I am.

I can't tell you how much I hate that picture. If we are looking for retarded then the person that assembled that monstrosity wins.

Who are they to belittle the achievements of others? Who are they to poke fun at the sense of achievement that young man gained by taking part in such a magnificent event as the Special Olympics? What have they ever done with their lives that is so magnificent as too give them this view of the world?

I am sorry - that really hit a nerve with me.

The Olympics are one of the single greatest achievements of modern history and the special olympics as its pinnacle. On a par with man landing on the moon.

They have survived innumerable political and terrorist upheavals and even World wars. The modern Olympics is testimony to man's better side.

I would gladly write that epitath on that half-wit's tombstone!

You know I have been on this forum for a while now and one thing that I notice is that most here have NO sence of humor. No one has EVER said that humor has to be politically correct or even in good taste for that matter. If the above image offended you then that IS on you. My wife has worked with the mentally handicapped for years, does that mean I can't tell her a joke that pokes fun at the mentally retarded? Hell NO! I am Polish, does that mean I should get pissed off at everyone that tells me a Polish Joke? NO! People need to lighten up a little and learn to laugh, especially at themselves. So what if it poked fun at the Special Olympics or "Special Needs people". Did it get its point accross? I think so. And if by posting this means that one or all of you get pissed off at me then tough chit! Get over yourselves.

Although I find the picture to be a poor taste like others here. The points in PK's last post are absolutley true many people around here do not know how to take a joke even is 42 9.gif are placed behind the joke ! Everyone does indeed need to learn to take a joke. This place often does come off and be described to me as being full of stuffed shirts by people outside the circle.

OMG PK - where have you been for the last 10 years???

Political correctness may well be a double edged sword and sometimes appear to be so restrictive as to tend to ridicule but it does have its place.

I am impressed with your degree of comfort that allows such lattitude in what is, and is not, acceptable. I wonder how far it goes?

Suppose that was a picture of a black man and the punchline said "but you are still a N***R". Acceptable?

I would be very surprised if there is no example of minority bashing we couldnt find that would get right up your nose - as this did mine.

There is something wholy sinister about attacking those who, supposedly, are incapable of defending themselves. To me this ranks right up there with child pornography and that is why I reacted as I did.

No sense of humor? Plain and simple. That was NOT funny. It wasnt even dark humor funny. It has nothing to do with stuffed shirts or no humor either. I think there is all sorts of humor in here from a simple play on words to the far more abstract. Quite simply, that pic was in poor taste and unfunny to boot. There are various levels of humor and in my view, that isnt too high on the totem poll. I love humor... from Woody Allen to Monty Python to the Simpsons. Hell, I even will bust a gut at certain episodes of JackAss. But to me, that was not even on the same page.

Max: It is not a degree of comfort at all that allows such lattitude for what is or is not acceptable. How far does it go? As far as possible. Let's suppose for arguments sake that it indeed showed a black man and the punchline said " But you are still a N****r. So what? What if it said "Your still a Polack? Again so what? How do they sepperatee the men from the boys in Greece? Crowbar! SO WHAT! If you can't laugh at yourself then I surely feel sorry for you. Like I said before, I am a 35 year old overweight middle class Polish white guy, Do I hear jokes about Polish people? or fat jokes? How about the "white" jokes made by others about the "Whites" lack of rythem? Who cares. Humor wether it sinister or light hearted or political or tasteless is still humor. You remind me of the people who complain about whats on the radio, *NEWS FLASH* Change the radio station! Revolutionary thought. To say you rank that picture right up there with child pornography is in my opinion an insane statement. But there again you are entitled to your beliefs. You should not go around letting everything you see offend you. The only thing you gain by that is a truely miserable existance.

My 2 year old daughter was born with Downs Syndrome. As a father of a child with special needs, I look at something like that picture and I am both angry and dismayed.

PKuziel: Are you asking that my 2 year old daughter needs to learn to laugh at herself because she has special needs? You sir, are a moron, and for you to defend your actions by atempting to claim a moral high ground of being above the ire of others who view such a post as in exteremely poor taste shows exactly how out of touch you are with the children that you claim your wife works to help.

I pity you, that you have such a narrow world view to think that a picture like that is somehow OK, and to have such a distorted view of yourself that you think that others views are the problem, and not your own.

Ahh the personal attack. I wondered when it might come. Even though I do not require or even desire your pity, thanks for the thought. I never said that the post was NOT in poor taste. Is it a twisted, sick picture? Yes it is. Do I find in humorous, To be honest? Slightly. Do I feel bad for the people my wife helps? Yes I do, it is terrible to be born with a handicap and it is easy to sit there and say " Why Me?" Why not you? You know most of the special needs people I meet don't think of themselves as " Handicapped". Handicapable is more like it.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I CAN NOT change

The courage to change the things I CAN.

And the WISDOM to know the difference.

P.S. I never claimed not to be twisted or sick or completely nuts for that matter.

"If you can't laugh at yourself then I surely feel sorry for you."

But I am not being asked to laugh at myself - I am being asked to laugh at someone less fortunate than me who is striving to make the best of themselves.

This is the first time I ever recall being accused of not having a sense of humour. Ah well its a tagline I can live with.

As for the comparison with child pornography lets see.

Child pornography is the use of children to produce pictures for the sexual stimulation of those sad enough to be stimulated by them.

This picture is the use of a disabled child to produce a picture for the fun of those sad enough to be stimulated by it.

Both are at the expense of the child in question.

Both can cause deep psychological trama to the child involved.

Both are designed to provide pleasure to the abuser and neither seem to care much about the damage done.

Both disgust those who are offended by them.

I think my example stands - nice to see there is something you dont approve of though....
