CAS
I didn't even think to add in wiring, install tools, DVD's, etc. Bare bones equipment probably in for $4k. Components and media closer to $6k.
Colin
I have detailed records, but not with me. They show that while my investment remains about the same and the quality has improved tremondously, the swapping of components in and out cost a lot. Since I made a profit on my horizontal horn, B2 crossover, walnut oiled Cornwalls, my classic Klipsch corner Khorns were effectively free. So, I have about $1700 into a system that actually cost more like 6-7K over the decades. The venerable Stereophile magazine asked this question once in a survey some years ago. They found that the average consumer spent 3 to 6K on their audio system, but had a few components 15 to 30 years old! Since I think that $500 is considered high-end for the typical household appliance, I believe that audiophile quality components begin at about $1K. At least that is where limited production and made in the USA products can offer enough margin to be tempting to entrepreneurs. Therefore, tweaking audiophiles probably spend 2 to 5 times as much on their advanced HT systems, including subwoofers, separates, EQ, vibration isolation platforms and acoustic panels. In this survey, as of now, and where a total was provided in USD; 23 of us spent $243,495, averaging $10,586.74.

Cal Blacksmith
No bragging, about $4000 in equipment/speakers about 50% more for list prices. Add to that furniture, window treatments, DVDs etc and it is near twice the quoted price. See equipment in profile.
