flannj
I just walked outside... I work in the Chicago Loop, in the Chicago Board of Trade Building on Jackson Blvd. Today's Immigration March goes past the building on Jackson on the way to Grant Park. Chicago Police estimate the crowd at half a million. I don't desire to turn this into a political thread about immigration reform. But I just had to comment on how impressive it is that we live in a place where an event like this can happen. 500,000 singing, chanting, flag waving people of all ages, backgrounds, and lifestyles, united together to voice their views. Hopefully it will all go off peacefully, it certainly seems at this point to be very well organized. Very impressive indeed... - Jim
Daddy Dee
that is impressive indeed. Wish I could see that. There is just no way to convey the magnitude on TV.
SilverSport
The radio is only reporting 300,000 in Chicago...still a lot, I wonder what the final tally will be...Bill

flannj
ABC news just reported that Chicago Police estimate 400,000 plus. During a work day in the Chicago Loop. Not a single arrest.
jt1stcav
A peaceful rally is always the best approach IMO. Looks like we learned something from the hippies and flower children afterall.[H]

T2K
Even more impressive would be 20 million marching in a southerly direction in south Texas. Support HR 4437. Keith
ranjith
I had the luck of being at the biggest concert when the rolling stones and friends (incl ac/dc, the guess who, rush, flaming lips, the tea party, the isley brothers and the list goes on) performed a 11hr concert after toronto was stuck by sars a few years ago. It was such an amazing event, me and my buddies got there at 5.30am and waited for hours so we could get a spot close to stage before people started cramming in. The day was HOT, so they have trucks and trucks of free water bottles. Along with that they sprayed down the crowd every half hour with fire hoses to keep us cool. Over 500,000 people and I was about 5feet from the stage, I turn around and can stare ar half a million people. Its an image I'll never forget, it was a great concert too. What can I say... seeing AC/DC standing next to 2 australian lesbians will go down as one of my best times ever
oldbuckster
Ya gotta love those pro-illegal alien types marching & demanding free amnesty for everyone who entered our country illegally[] Wonder if they refused the free medical attention they get, welfare payments they receive, the education for their kids, in spanish, they get, surplus food they get(although I don't really have a problem with the food, we waste so much), while being here illegally? If I remember correctly, President Reagan granted amnesty to 8 million aliens in the 80's, and that was to be the end of allowing people to stay here illegally. In less than 20 years, we have 12 million more, with no end in sight, unbelievable. We are the melting pot of the world, and we should allow people to come to our great country, but do it the right way, the same way many families came here, through legal immigration. Only in America can Illegal Aliens stage a protest about immigration laws. I better stop before someone says that this is political, and has no place here. colterphoto1
I'm with buckeye and buckster- they enter illegally then have the nerve to use the right to freedom of assembly and speech to demand amnesty for their actions? Ok, great that this type of assembly can take place in the USofA. I'm with ya there. But they are still here illegally- I say- they've given us notice that they will be in a particular place at a particular time. Line up the busses and deport this problem before it becomes an UNpeaceable assembly. Which it will. Michael

CECAA850
Send'em all packin. It'd be great if all the places they were "employed" at wouldn't let them back to work.
flannj
I don't desire to turn this into a political thread about immigration reform. Before Amy has to jump on here and remind us "no politics please". I was only posting an observation as to what was happening 5 feet outside of my office. Several hundred thousand people walking by. Not something you see every day.
dkp
Here's a little sumthin' that will really frost your muffins. Here in the great state of Michigan, if an illegal immigrant arrives at the Secretary of State's office requesting an operator's license (driver's license), he cannot be denied. This I simply cannot phathom. Here you have someone who has, in all likelihood, traveled in excess of 1,000 miles yet STILL needs a license to get around locally? What gives? I fail to understand why the Secretary of State is not REQUIRED to contact the INS immediately in these cases. David

Yep, those are some pretty hot issues. One of the more important factors is that the labor market must be closed to illegals. What that means is strict enforcement of employers. Until the govt. enforces the rules, will the jobs dry up......... and when that happens....the huge flow will subside as well. Once the govt shows it can impose itself on employers who break the rules and impose heavy fines, illegals will find it much more difficult to find work. Buckeye_Nut
Send'em all packin. It'd be great if all the places they were "employed" at wouldn't let them back to work. That is the key....... Mass deportation isnt the answer. On the other hand, if we can eliminate their jobs, they'll deport themselves.

They're the 'pro-drivers license' party, and their politics have a lot to do with that specific issue. I especially get a laugh out of all the media coverage. The media describes the rallies as "Pro-Immigration", and describe how illegals are necessary for taking jobs "we wont do" ...etc, etc..etc..... It's very clear which group is pro-illegal & pro-amnesty, and which is not.

It's not about transportation, it's about people ILLEGALLY in this country to get the right to vote!
