My Top 10 List of Speakers

Back to business - the Definitive is a 3-way ribbon/planar system that has efficiency levels that rival some horn designs so these speakers can be driven by as little as 20w tube amps. It's a limited production speaker, made only to order for those with enough money or a friendly bank manager...

Runnin' total, and a list of "appearances" from the good, bad, ugly and "aesthetically pleasing".... Those pesky little forum glitches are not included at the moment (but could be...)..................... etc.

Yeah, it's scary isn't it? There is so much choice out there it's a wonder so many manufacturers survive. We're spoilt for choice...

Running List Update for 30 October 2006;

I've also numbered them. At the end of today, I'll go back to the thread and extract the next batch for tomorrow.

Excuse typo's, incorrect identification, etc. If I've made a mistake, left something out, etc., correct me (include the number); it's on an excel database, easy to correct and re-sort.

Maybe at the end of this thread (if there will ever be an end...), everyone can "vote" for 10 by the numbers and see what the "community" thinks as a whole?

Maybe vote for several categories (besides, how can you not "luv" the electronluv for some category?!!!)

The Paradigm Reference Signature speakers are meant to be played with their grilles on. But this pic shows the S8 drivers in all their glory. The build quality is outstanding for the money although the design is not to my taste. The sound is, though. Certainly a top 10 candidate if your cash supply isn't limitless...

I think Klipsch does this floor standing tower much better. The RF-83 has to be one of the best speakers of this genre that you can buy. The styling is simple, yet elegant. But the sound is something else. You'd have to spend a lot more money to improve on this...

But, if you did have more money to spend, how about the Nola Grand Reference IV. This speaker system consists of seven main pieces that include a pair of main towers with external bi-wired passive crossover, a pair of passive subwoofer towers, a variable low pass electronic filter, and a pair of IP-1 crossover isolation platforms. A total of 46 high-quality drivers are split between four towers, with each channel being built in mirror-imaged arrays. Frequency response if from 16Hz to 46kHz and total acoustic output can reach a staggering 120dB from 20Hz to 20kHz! Cool...

How about an oldie but a goodie. Back in 1982 Infinity released the Reference Standard I A/B. With separate woofer and midrange/tweeter towers, this almost 400 lbs. system featured a total of six 8-inch polypropylene woofers which were mated with seven EMIM midrange drivers in dipole array and four EMIT tweeters in dipole array as well (three tweeters up front, one on the rear). At the time the entire system came in at a suggested retail price of $6,000...

German loudspeaker manufacture Duevel specializes in designing and manufacturing unique full-range horn units. This design is said to provide full 360o radiation of the drivers to provide a precise and full room soundstage. An interesting 2 way horn design...

While we're on the subject of horns, seen here is the CarfraeHORN. This UK made horn unit is claimed to give room filling sound with only four watts of power! In fact we are talking all the way down to 32 Hz cleanly! Using no crossover on the Lowther DX4 driver unit, the CarfraeHORN takes advantage of the tractrix contour because it is recognized as being the most musical. The cabinet is made to high precision specifications and using continuous sections of birch laminate. Hmmm...
