That name would work!...I think Dean is talking about the two orange (Tube Extenders) on the left of the pic as you look at it...

Bill

Gary,

Thanks! I'm leaning to something along the line of VRD ST Jr

Bill.

Ah good observation and guess what was I thinking...... okay he is referring to above the chassis. Those are test sockets that I place under the tubes to measure operating voltages while letting the burn in without taking it out of my system and under real world music conditions.

Socket adapter? looks like a CV4004 parked on the socket, though the lettering from the pic looks like CV4007.

I got a used pair of Mullard CV4004's ('85 date code) for eight bucks the other day. Nice and strong like new. They were in a DAC.

What about powder-coating? Is that even worth bothering over? Stainless would be real nice, but punching and drilling through that stuff is a major chore.

Mike,

I'll double your money on those CV tubes[;)] I don't do any punching on the final product I have it done by a CNC metal shop. I only do that to proto type. My Neck problems could never live through that kind of punishment even with aluminum!

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE! Those are simply awesome Craig. Congratualtions, can't wait to hear your views on how they stack up next to the VRD's sound-wise. Am I correct in asuming those are two chokes and four power supply caps underneath?

I have just one little quibble. I'm thinking maybe you should move those two rectifier tubes forward about an inch or line them up one behing the other in the middle. It looks like you have the room underneath and I think it may add something to the overall gorgeous appearance. Just my IMO.

Thebes,

Happy New Year!!

Yea interesting thought on the rectifier placement. I actually first had them set back but found that would limit the use to small 5AR4 type form factor. Moving them forward much could raise havoc with residue noise since those sockets have high raw AC voltage on them. You want to keep that stuff away from front end tubes as much as possible. I might be able to try to move them slightly forward but not much and that would limit the visual effect I think?

Folks keep the suggestions coming I love the feedback!!

Looks great Craig!

By the way I smoked from the age of 17 to 41 up to almost 3 packs a day.

Got real tired of the cough during laughing. Said enough is enough and been smoke free for exactly 1 year now. Cold turkey.

If I can do it anyone can.

What about powder-coating?

I had issues with the only shop in this area I could find that would talk to me about the quanities I'm alble to afford to deal with so I dropped that option. I ordered enough to build 20 amps and only could build like 6 sets and had to waste the rest because it didn't even remotely fit my idea of quality finish. I'm not saying it couldn't work I'm saying in this area for economic reasons the available quality powder coaters are setup to service the auto industry. Same with the chroming/plating business to some extent. They either want big quanities or charge an arm. and two legs because they service the auto restorer hobbyist types that will pay huge bucks or simply do poor quaility work.

Haven't had a smoke in... lets see five minutes.

Two packs a day of Camel straights for 30 plus years.

I doubt I could ever quit. Hats off to anyone trying.

Back in the spring when I lost my father I was up to 3 packs a day and ended up completely losing my voice between the nails, all the talking and emotional stress. I had to cut way back to regain my voice......... I am now a 1 pack a day or less man and I plan to quit on my spring fishing vacation this year in the spring. I have the same problem as Gary with a wife that smokes. The problem I have is she completely refuses to even discuss quiting. So I figure the week in the wilderness with no easy option for access to nails will be the perfect time to suffer the worst of it.

I'm supposed to be on my last pack. I turn 48 this month, and Alexia is just over a year old. I either quit or probably won't live to see her graduate from High School.

I bought my friend in Mexico Nicorette for his Christmas present he will get next week. It was expensive but someone has to help him along; he has been dropping hints he needed help. I am starting to study Yoga to focus better on diet and exersize. 40 minute walk with the dogs today and 20 minutes of Yoga stretching before work.

I'm partial to black or the stainless myself. Looks like it's about a half step away from being dual-mono. I imagine like the VRD's, you kept feedback to a minimum?

Sure doesn't look like you can call it a VRD-Light. What are those things underneath the two tubes on the far left?

I would stay with Stainless.

I think "VRD Stereo Jr." has a nice ring to it. Or you could name it "Rick's Next Power Amp"; but that just does not have much advertising mystique to it.[:D]

Everyone that has responded with encouragement thanks a bunch!

I'm just glad I didn't make a grave wiring error in the late night seesions! I was so worried I would end up having the wreck some nearly perfect clean wiring tearing it back apart to fix some silly brain fart....... been there and sone that a number of times.
