NJbob
I just receiently built new cabinet's for my vintage LS- Stock specs. I was wondering about adding an extra 1/2" to the sides and top. They sound great, but they vibrate and I figure that cant be good for the long haul.
Guest " "
You can also add tri-angle wedges on each side of the dog house.
Islander
It can't be good for the bass efficiency, either. The La Scala IIs have a thicker bass bin for this reason. I plan to eventually have an extra sheet of 3/4" birch ply added to the sides of my speakers (and have them refinished at the same time), and others have done something similar. You can add a layer to the sides and it will stiffen up those sides if you bond the extra layer well (glue and screws/nails). A better solution is the horizontal brace in the mouth like the attached pic. if you want to be really obsessive about it, offset the brace an inch and a half either side of the centerline to further ensure there are no natural resonances. J.4knee
Didn't Klipsch have to do some EQ'ing in the network to compensate for some lost bass potency when they switched to 1" MDF to stiffen sidewalls the LSII bass bins? I remember something being said to that affect when we were at the Indy pilgrimage and they revealed them 2 years ago.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
JohnA
I doubt it. The original la Scala has a hump in the response from about 100 Hz to 200, or so. That is where my hands and ears think the bass horn resonance is. There is a picture of Mr. Paul with a braced La Scala in the background floating around the Forum. The "vibration" has been long known.
IndyKlipschFan
John... I think the Peavey FH-1 did this with the braces.. It does help, as you said.
JohnA
Roger, As a matter of fact, Peavey did.

freddyi
Hey John - my FH1 are very solid and 511 is a good choice for top or mid squawker. Seems to me any network change (like in later K-horn?) which attempts to get a dB or so more from a woofer at its top by dropping Z would not have effect with high output Z amps such as SET with no loop feedback. Do you like the sound of K33E better than Stock PV woofer? Add two of Cowan's diy 30Hz tapped horns with Peerless 12 as subs around 80 (?) and FH1 should make basis of a good, coherent and dynamic system. that said I'm still a klamlover :^) Freddy

pmsummer
Two dog houses in that pic... Wonder how big the woofer is in that second one?
JohnA
Wonder how big the woofer is in that second one? About 48 pounds, white with orange trim and a short, square spaniel "horn".
JohnA
John I am surprised more do not look for older Peavey bottoms, and get parts for the tops? I'm looking for one more FH-1 bass horn for a center channel in a 100 seat side auditorium. I haven't had much luck lately. The first 2 sound surprising good; better than they have a right to. it was just dumb luck that the crossover worked as well as it did, not more testing than I was able to do. There's a guy in Ohio that has a bunch for sale at $200 ea. I'll see if I can find the info. I was in PA for a consulting job and I swung up to NY and picked up a PAIR of SP-1's for $200 total, so it was worth the extra gas to bring my trailer behind the car for it. ClaudeJ1
Mr. Twin doghouse man. Are you using K33's in your FH-1's? Or just the Black Widows? If you should need some 511's and 902-8b's I will be putting a pair of each on Ebay soon. Claude
