You will be able to really enjoy VG and even VG- discs that are unlistenable on your "plastic" turntable!!!

That's funny!

Allan, how do you get in touch with Juki?

He's on ebay and Audiogon pretty regularly.

http://stores.ebay.com/2juki

Send him a message--he can provide many itemsthat he never lists (such as the Ortofon SPU range). His price for the SPU-GM mono was about 40% less than the Euro vendors (the cartridge is not available in the USA).

So cool GP, and now time for a FALL Blue Note demo - ENJOY your new baby

I just received a parcel in the mail today from my friend in Newport News, VA. He sent me something he wants me to try out......along the lines of a preamp, but he's been aloof in telling me exactly WHAT IT IS.

Guess 1/2 the fun is investigating and experimenting. I let you know tomorrow what was sent. Secondly, I should be receiving my FIRST Art Pepper LP "Meets the Rhythm section" , so (2) new items to check out and report back on

Thanks Allan. I've wanted to try and SPU for some time now. I've got the perfect turntable and arm for one. Even if jazz, isn't my main thing, I'm anxious to see how it sounds on some of the mellower rock like Dire Straits and perhaps some of the alt-country and folkier stuff I like.

Looks good Allan, and I'm sure it's gonna sound excellent with your having gone through it. Did you send the SME to Brittaudio for a re-wire/incognito kit?

I have quick question based on the picture you posted.... from the apparent position of the tone arm and a glance at the bias weight's position.... Is the length of line on the bias weight long enough? or was the wire guide bent outward too much? Because it appears to be too short.

The wire guide looks to be at the same angle as mine, but my bias weight hangs down a 1" lower. Maybe it's just the angle of the photograph, but it sure looks like you got at least 25% of the LP left to play and less than 1/2 inch of travel on the bias weight.

Congrat's Gary, and now that you have a real TT, I'll give you $50 bucks for your Basis [;)], and another $20 for the stylus [:D]. Enjoy your new toy, and hope to make it up there some day. Your a top guy around here. Also, got the LP's when I got back last night, thank you. The wife quickly asked me to put the Police LP on.

Ciao'

The bias weight lead is long enough. It's a bit shorter than others I have seen, but it has plenty of travel all the way to the end of the dead wax.

I have rewired an old SME only once. It is a MAJOR pain in the neck. Have you ever taken apart one of these arms?--It takes 50 times longer to put it back together than to take it apart. Plus, the one time I rewired one of these I heard ZERO sonic improvement so I vowed never to do it again!

I know Allan had to buy some new fishing line as the old was kinked. I'm sure it's just an optical illusion Gilbert.

BTW - Have you played that APP MFSL LP I sent you yet?

Have I mentioned how excited I am to get this baby up and running this weekend????? I've been cleaning/re-cleaning all of my mono LPs these past couple of weeks in anticipation!

Uh, you haven't mentioned how excited you really are quite enough times yet, Gary! A few more remarks and we all might get the hint yet.[;)]

Looks like Allen and Scott did an excellent job bringing this classic back to life...what better way to play jazz classics than on this classic Thorens!

Max brought up a good point...I don't know your upstairs system, Gary; is it indeed a stereo system with this "new" mono turntable, or is it completely mono, along with one Cornwall? If not, have you thought of doing so? That would be quite the conversation piece I'd think...

EDIT: just checked out your system profile and answered my own question.[*-)]

Absolutely! That was one of the first LP's to see some mileage on my TT. I've purchased a few other MFSL LP's (some sealed, some not), and a bunch of vintage LP's (mostly sealed) to listen too. The wife even purchased some new-old Rod Stewart's albums that were sealed.

And it's funny you should mention the APP LP, becasue by coincidnece, I ordered the same APP LP this afternoon during my lunch break. I found a sealed copy on ebay that's an orig. 1977 pressing. It was a bit pricey at $14, bu I want to listen to it for a comparo against the MFSL. I'm interested in knowing if my ears can tell a difference.

Allan, I'm getting horny looking at Gary's TT setup, so I'll post a picture of my Thorens to show off the plinth you refinished for me and add to the TT porn [:P].

Mike - I'll call you tomorrow. I picked up a few more today you might be interested in.

Gilbert - I sent you that copy once I picked up the UHQR version. Now THAT copy kicks a$$!!! BTW - You should be getting that package soon. I want your review of the Return To Alto Acres LP.

Got the package, and it was a very nice surprise when I got home from my oh-too-short vacation. Thank you for your kindness, again.

Sir! Yes Sir! I'll give it a good listening too over the next weekend when I have time for multiple playbacks. This weekend's gonna be pretty busy for me, but it's all play no work. I've gotta go to OKC (that's Oklahoma City for you yankee boy non-redneck types) [;)] all day Friday, Sat. & part of Sun.

But the next weekend I'll give it a spin and compare with my new/used copy of Angel Wings. It'll be a Jazz weekend for Gilbert. Gotta tell ya, that Angel Wings LP took forever to get here, almost 4 weeks. I only got to listen to side A, before the wife made me toss on that POLICE Syncronicity LP you gave me. I did enjoy that side A though.

Relatively speaking, it's sounds like a more contemporary style of jazz, than what Allan gave me. Yes Allan, I like the CD's you gave me very much, you introduced and taught me an appreciation to a style of music that was a void to my music listening education. I do enjoy and appreciate Jazz very much. It is far more than just random horn blowing, but it took a few listenings for that mind-set to evaporate from me. You really need to listen to it, and then, it grabs you. I just wish all those guys were still around and kicking, because there's nothing really like that anymore, at least not in my world. Jazz came, it trived & even concured for while, but then it disappeared from the scene.

Anyway, with regards to Angel Wings, I figured out pretty quickly (I think), that Art Pepper is on the Sax. But who is the cat on the trumpet, the solo trumpet near the end of the track titled "You'd Be Nice To Come Home To". I really love that.

Oh boy, I'm getting carried away...... so without further ado, here's a picture of my TT. Allan selected the SPU for me, and the Plinth, and did the finishing job on the plinth.... Well, come to think of it, he also is the one that got me hooked oh the Thorens TD124 series. Thanks guys, you've helped me out, more than you'll ever know.

The cat on trumpet is the cat whose name is on the cover of the album!

Jack Sheldon. Nice, eh?

Glad you like the TD-124 Also glad you like the Jack Sheldon/Art Pepper record. But this comment is pure bullsh!t. You have no idea what you're talking about. There are GREAT young jazz players and PLENTY of verteran mainstays still on the scene playing beautifully. I am out listening to live jazz about 6 times a month on average and I could go out EVERY night here in L.A. if I had the time and energy.

The problem you're having is that there is not a vibrant jazz scene out there in Broken Arrow (doubt there EVER was one)! But there are PLENTY of NEW releases from GREAT young players! If you'd like a list (most on CD only--sorry), drop me a line!!!

Gary; that's who I thought it was, but on the LP, there's no mention of who's on what instrument. Guess I should have done a web search.

Allan, tell me what you really think, and them there is fight'en words pilgrim [;)], but.... . Nah, no offence taken, I think I have you figured out. I'll take it straight any day of the week.

And your right, it is BS, because I don't know a damn thing about Jazz except what my ears hear and what Gary & you have introduced me to. I do listen to alott of FM radio, various channels, but I must confess, I have never ever heard any regular jazz played on the radio. Only the occassional token Jazz song, and them, maybe only on a Sunday special radio program. But never, ever is anything even remotely similar to the music you gave me.

At the night club scenes that you occasionally visit, are there young musicians playing that stuff? If so, please shoot me a couple of names or CD's to buy (duphas@cox.net) ..... Or are you refering to they the older musicians that seem to be kicking the bucket at an ever increasing rate?.... ala "In Case You Forgot Just How Bad They Really WERE?).....

Back to Gary's toy... one of the common problems I have seen with well used 124's is a dented thrust plate. This little plate sits on the bottom of the main bearing well and is supposed to be flat. This divit was bad enough that it actually "trapped" the ball bearing in the spindle, wearing little rings on the ball bearing. No wonder I wasn't very impressed with this table when I first listened to it. Allan hasn't run in to this problem, however I've seen it on 3 124's that I've take apart.
