Colin
I wish there was a low cost, single driver, tube powered, one-piece unit that could play radio, CDs or iPods, with a USB connection. Since there isn’t, what is the best sounding boom box below $100? Above $100?
tommyboy
I don't know? A used one probably......
JJkizak
A tube boom box? With a 75 lb battery no one could pick it up. JJK
boom3
I was going to say that, but I remembered that DC-DC converters can put out 250 volts from 12 or 9 volts easily. The real show-stopper would be the output transformer.
Colin
I wasn't thinking portable
Marvel
Sure, why not? Something like the single ended 6BQ5 (I think that's right), used in those Roberts R-T-R recorders. Probably get away with only one or two input tubes. Hmmmmm...
jacksonbart
Only if it was battery powered.
Islander
My parents had a tube boom box back in the late fifties. It was a portable radio about the size of a thick attache case. I was pretty young back then and only remember that it took a few minutes to warm up. It took sort of rectangular zinc-carbon batteries that looked a bit like early crossover capacitors, only with paper jackets. Of course, it didn't play cassettes, 8-tracks or CDs. Radio only. Colin
guys, music lovers, what would you get for somebody who needs to listen to radio and play CDs?
Joe Shmoe
I have not looked at them in years, but AIWA was always pretty good back in the day.
fini
My wife has a Boston Acoustics Recepter clock radio that's nice. I think it has an aux input for cds. Is this person interested in HD or regular radio?
BLSamuel
I've read pretty good things about the Cambridge Soundworks Radio CDs. Fuller sound than the Bose and real controls so it can still be operated should one lose or damage the remote. http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/store/category.cgi?category=lp_radio_family Too bad Klipsch doesn't make any radios. Add a radio and CD player to an iGroove model and smoke the competition.
tigerwoodKhorns
I have one of these. http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ZS-X1-Sports-Boombox-Protection/dp/B00008Y1AD It was under $100 and its OK. For a boom box it is actually very good. I use it when working around the house or in the yard. Its also waterproof so its good for by the pool. askbob1
the cost is $200, but the jvc kaboombox is second to none that i've heard. other than that, sony has a few decent ones for around $100. some of those oldschool 'boomboxes' in jb's post go for over $500 on fleabay. i wish i had all of the ones i had as a kid!
