learn to use win 8? really? there is little difference between that and 7 if you are in desk top mode. you DON'T need to use it in window PAIN mode and 8.1 has much faster start up times and is really quite nice once set up.

less equipment and more content! once I reach a certain plateau of equipment satisfaction, I try and stay there for an extended period of time before contemplating another buying frenzy. Like most of you, I have hundreds of LP's and maybe a thousands of discs and there is ALWAYS more music to explore. I get the equipment obsession and the quest for perfection... it is VERY INTOXICATING, but in the end it's all about the music/content. the only time I really feel a need to move quickly into more equipment is when I get a major component and it doesn't deliver the expected results... I feel as if I do not remove it and find a solution quickly, that I will go nuts.

look at HP's offerings (asus is another LOW COST well built company)... if you get a choice between win8 and win 8.1... get 8.1

if you do a lot of typing, a table can be challenging for some...large fingered. but if you are competent, you can get used to a monitor keyboard, but it will never be exactly as comfortable or as proficient. as mentioned above, most comp's in that price range of say... 400-650'ish are pretty much all similar, so you have to choose by reputation and customer service. when you find one post it here and we can see if anything is lacking.
