  1. You can make one for about $100 using a sheet of 3/4" birch plywood, a sheet of luan for backing, and some wheels to roll it around on when you need to move it. The beauty of doing it yourself is that you can make the shelf heights correct for cooling, shelf depths, etc. Table saw, screws (or finishing nail gun), and some high quality semi-gloss (or satin) black paint ( I use "sparkling black", exterior grade, latex enamel from Ace Hardware; it looks like lacquer, can be rolled, and can be easily cleaned and every year or two, a fresh coat put on).
  2. Good thing you let me know......, I'm turning around and headed back from my planned home invasion escapade. Do you still want the Single Malt Scotch that was intended to sedate you as we perpetated this heinous act? [H]
  3. I do not need electricity, power conditioners, batteries (well maybe but we won't go there if you don't mind...). or anything else if this is controlling me.... [6]
  4. Then there's those of us who have the, "I'm gonna' ask, and you'd better tell me..." SWMBO policy..... []
  5. Emperor: The coffee is strong in this one.... Vader: So it would seem..... []
  6. Well.... it could be worse.... Like explaining to SWMBO that you did not order the blow up dolls that just arrived addressed to someone with a PP address named grommlake..... [:S]
  7. That's so wrong!!!! [Y][Y][Y]
  8. Clean them up with mineral spirits and let dry, the look at the surface and if all "sheen" is flat then they are ready to oil. If not, do it again, etc. Oil choice is like opinions, everyone's got one [].... Me? Watco Danish, thinned 70/30, oil/min spirits, then once a month with a rag and Old English Lemon oil to clear off the dust, etc.
  9. Don't you ever wonder what the user name for this guy would be? [6]
  10. I remember reading an interview with Shelby way, way back.... The three rules of hot-rodding if I recall. Seems to apply to stereo equipment.... 1. Speed costs money - how fast do you want to go? 2. There ain't no substitute for cubic inches.... 3. KISS principle... Keep it simple....
  11. Welcome to the Forum!!!, and as colter sez... Welcome to the madness!!!! [] PS, Have fun with the "mods"; that's the best way to learn what can be done to imprtove sound, cosmetic looks, etc.
  12. Welcome!!! We're just a bunch of wild and crazy folks!!! Well, some of us have little quirks, but all in all, generally on the safe side of the "clinically insane" definition... []
  13. Goodfella's..... Huhm.... I can see it now.... As the red 66 Caddy shows up with a coupla' "wise guys" needing to speak at the "schmuck" and to "listen" to your system.... LOL!!
  14. If you need to replace your old cabinets, the more cost effective method is to find another pair of nice cabinets and transfer drivers. If you are so inclined and have a very good table saw, good blades, dado blade; a good miter saw; a good router with "plunge" attachment, etc.etc, you could redo the cabinets yourself. The other option is to find a pair of very nice H-I cabinets, and replace the motor board with a modified H-II board, transfer drivers, etc. Contact BEC on the Forum regarding a H-II board that fits correctly in the H-I cabinet.
  15. As wuzzer said.... You can do it if the speakers are identical (actually you can do with any two pairs...) as long as you know the impedance. Two pairs of 8 ohm speakers, when connected in parallel (one positive lead, split to both speakers, and one negative lead, split, returning to the amp) will lower it to 4 ohms, and as long as the amp will do 4 ohm speakers, no big deal. Just remember that your amp's output at any volume setting (volume level pots are usually calibrated for a standard 8 ohm load) is now doubled. You can clip the amp and damage the speaker drivers if not careful. Your overall volume increase will be about 3dB in SPL. Or.... In series.... positive lead to speaker positive, then from speaker negative to other speaker positive, then from other speaker negative back to amp. With two 8 ohm speakers, the impedance is now 16 ohms. As long as the amp can drive 16 ohm speakers, no problem. Corresponding drop in power at any volume setting on the knob. Think of it this way, in parallel you are opening two "pipes", thus flow (watts to the speakers) is increased, in series, you are increasing the resistance (flow) by adding the secondf pair. The very best method is to use the A and B pair jacks and run them separately as most amps with an A/B pair are designed to compensate the output variance when two pairs are connected. Just some thoughts....
  16. Old style "anglicization", etc. Same thing with english version of many Indian cities; what we used to call Bombay has now reverted (in common useage) to Mumbai. Anglicised european names (which came into common useage in the late 1500's in England) dates back to emmisaries from the courts, and cartographers who produced maps for those various courts. It was a very common practice, and until quite recently In the case of "Koln" (with the umlaut dots over o), the name Cologne was simply how the English pronounced Koln. Has to do with the correct pronunciation and what a non-german speaker hears and attempts to duplicate. Thus... The origins of these "quirks" was so explained to me when I was in a Brit school back in the day... This during the lecture on the poor use of the King's English by us "colonials" who cannot spell "colour" correctly (LOL!!!).. [H]
  17. It's like getting married.... Make sure she fits in with your budget; her in-laws are not like characters from "The Hills Have Eyes"; she has most of her teeth; has a job that does not normally comes under scrutiny from the police (although that could be advantageous in some instances....); and most importantly, when you wake up and she's still asleep, you don't have to chew your arm off to get away.... [6] Caveat Emptor...... as always..... LOL!!!! [H]
  18. [Y] At an idle, the tube amp is like an unattended light bulb..... My Sansui AU-111, at an idle, showed about 80 watts on the UPS load meter. It did, however, produce a good amount of heat in the man cave after about 3-4 hours of "working"....
  19. If I'm awake and SWMBO is not..... I let sleeping the venomous science fiction level home version of "Species" in pissed off mode to continue the nappy poos..... Whe she arises in all of her glory like a strange interpretation of William Blake's famous "dragon" painting, then I'm safe for another day, or transgression.... whicver comes first....
  20. Lost power last night.... Big surges coming in and out, low power, then high, while the FPL folks screwed around wherever the problem was located..... End result? No major appliance damages. But my telephone answering machine no longer works very well (LOL). Now the rest of the stuff is ok, but the battery UPS's now have a "message" saying that they need replacing!!! LOL!!!! Oh well, at least I survived the "attack".... This is fun!!! []
  21. Serious good stuff!!! [Y][Y][Y] I am so tempted...... but I have no space left where I could get away with anything like that without throwing out stuff like furniture.... LOL!!! [H]
  22. You cannot win with the store employees.... They have been indoctrinated, and are full of themselves. When they wake up and see that other products do creditable jobs, they end up getting fired, or graduate from community college and sign on for "managerial training" with a fast food corp..... []
