  1. " properly set up with a low crossover makes much more sense to me. " Altec chose to crossover at the point where the woofer and horn had the same Di (Q). (which generally gives the most uniform off-axis power response in a room)
  2. " Forte III will be using titanium though, so I'd say that's a pretty good indication of whether they are worth it. " I'm sure Roy designed the network to take into account the (different) response of the Ti vs the phenolic diaphragms.
  3. Do you have the skills to align the diaphragm? I've done it before, but it requires a degree of skill that many will not have. It's similar to the earliest EV T35/K77 that don't use the plastic carrier. Also, you need to check the coil height vs the plane of the dome edge.
  4. " There are some speaker service businesses that offer re-magnetizing. I am now wondering about my thirty year old Heritage magnet collection. " Ferrite magnets are not a problem. Alnico drivers that have been over-powered, or dropped, are the ones to be concerned with.
  5. " Can someone ID the year? " 67-0452 looks like Eminence, 2004, week 52.
  6. A little work may be required. The horns with Alnico magnets had a cup cast into the back (of the horn) that needs a chunk broken out with a pair of pliers for the terminal board.
  7. " Keep in mind that the Dynamat is altering the internal cabinet volume that I am reasonably certain was precisely calculated by PWK when he designed it. " Uhhh, no.
  8. In addition to the room size issue, it it largely program material dependent. The vast majority of material will use less than one watt, some material could benefit from 100W!
  9. A Heresy II diaphragm should work just fine.
  10. " A Waves MaxxBass would work better and not kill off speakers if I understand correctly how it works. " They do different things, and feel very different. The Audio Control sounds better than the DBX. I also own a Rolls Bottom Feeder. I will be building a boom-box with a Waves MaxxBass (by PPI).
  11. It's an octave divider that triggers on 55hz~110hz. It can eat cone excursion in smaller speakers.
  12. " They are 13 inch " The usual size for a 15" woofer mounting hole for woofer
  13. " distorsion is between 2 and 3,5% in the range 3500 4500 hz " Try stuffing a sock in the tweeter. If that fixes it, change to a type AA tweeter section.
  14. " Then you are stuck with a 1st order tweeter filter, and you can't adjust the gain, change the crossover point, perform any equalization or linearization, or do anything but correct time delay without rolling in passive components. " Not correct, Why are you making this assumption?
  15. " Unicorns are for real. " What? Unicorns in the Bible? Yes, they are mentioned nine times.
  16. Just a reminder. If you're willing to mount the tweeter on top on a block, then push it back to be aligned with the mid, you only need a simple 2 in 4 out crossover. If you have a tube amp with a 16Ω tap you only need a single high quality cap to connect the tweeter (to the 16Ω tap), and you hook the mid to the 8Ω tap. No autoformer needed, the transformer is doing that function now.
  17. The vintage of caps used in the L65 Jubal should not need replacing. Most modern caps have their tin-spray end-terminations fail. Those JBL caps are a stacked-film type and have hand-soldered Teflon leads, are placed in a sand filled tube (for damping), and then filled with wax. The sound better, and last longer than inexpensive polypropylene types. A quality 100V cap should be fine, 100W/8Ω is only 80V P-P.
  18. 2441 diaphragms are very, very expensive. Make sure the pair of drivers have the same phase plugs, there were three different ones over the years (check the serial numbers for being close). Make sure that throats have not cracked (from rough handling), the part is NLA. Personally, while I love the 2441, I would get the Altec 288G with new diaphragms.
  19. " both the JBL 2440 " 2440 is aluminum, same as the 375.
  20. Greetings to my friends of both political parties……. To All My Democrat Friends: Please accept with no obligation, expressed or implied, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low-stress, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasion and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all. I also wish you a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2017, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great. This is, of course, neither to suggest nor imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country; also, this is not to imply that "America," as noted herein, is the only America in the Western Hemisphere. May these heartfelt wishes be received with equal intensity regardless of distribution of individual wealth, documented carbon footprint, or perceived social privilege among the wishes addressed herein. This wish is made without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, or sexual preference of the wishee. To All My Republican Friends: Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!
  21. "but has a lower slew rate than Mark's replacement. " The SR doesn't need to be over 1V/µSec for the design. Q100, Q102 provide the voltage gain. C101, C103 affect the audio quality way more than anything else in the circuit. The stone-slow and anemic (gain wise) MJ15015 (a selected 2N3055) will be a problem driving low impedances.

  25. "None of the NAD amps I have used have been lean in the bass department, " Compared with other NAD amps, it's lean sounding. "1130/2155 preamp/amp combo and they sounded great. " I would agree with that.
