  1. For a poor persons model you may want to consider building one from a kit. As an example, take a look at the Bottlehead site. I have built many of their kits. And as upgrades are designed, you can increase you sonic pleasure incrementally. I have put together their older Foreplay 1 preamp, their older Paramour monoblock 2A3, their Seduction phono preamp and have a pair of their Straight 8 line array speakers. The directions are easy to follow and there is a forum you can ask questions on if your build runs into a snag. And it was fun building them. http://www.bottlehead.com/store.php Wrinkles
  2. Here are some you can play as MP3 or burn onto a disc. http://www.realtraps.com/test-cd.htm
  3. If you run across any old Tektronics o'scopes (the ones that you find next to dumpster and weigh about 50 pounds and very old fashioned), inside other than tubes, you will find ceramic standoffs of various lengths. The solder locations on top of the standoffs are silver. For the DIY these make great internal wiring posts in amps and preamps.
  4. Yura, Call the Klipsch Technical Assistance phone line. They can tell you exactly when they were made and what components they should have in them like model of crossover, drivers, etc..
  5. Thanks for taking the time and giving us a class Dr. Who. Its been a while since I have seen it explained so well. Wrinkles
  6. Man, you are so poetic. Welcome back. Every line you wrote could be the name of an album or song or lines in a song As it stands, it says so much. Again, welcome back.
  7. Thankfully NO malfunctions. But what a great light show!
  8. Oldenough, Interesting you have listed 2 of my favorites. I would put Sheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov on the list as well. It is amazing how well music can take you on such a journey.
  9. Thanks Larry for the info, Please continue to list the better ones and some of your favorites. Good recommendations will remain on this website for years which will maintain a list of good performances to track down. I ordered some DVDs last night. Much appreciated.
  10. Groomslakea51, It takes courage to drag up and go. I applaud your daughter. My 22 year old received her Bachelors degree in dance at Texas Womens University. She found that there was not enough for her here in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. So she moved to New York City by herself. If she had them I would say "What a set of gonads she has", but it must be courage. And she is doing well there. I hope she comes back for good soon.
  11. Hey LarryC, Thanks for your quick response. Sorry mine was a little slow in coming. You ask a tough question. What kinds of performances do I like? The answer will not be as clear as you would like probably, but I would still like your input. As a homeschooling parent, we have for over 12-15 years almost every Sunday evening prior to putting the kiddos to bed have what we refer to as music appreciation night. It is during this approximate hour of time we listen to music, usually classical. But not always, as we have wandered in to big band, swing, dixieland, acapella, even some old radio shows and more. Prior to Christmas this year my wife mentioned that if I did not give her some gift ideas that I would have little to open on Christmas morning with my kids. Then, I remembered your Carmina Burana recommendation from years past and ordered it. The Sheherazade piece I found on Amazon you did not recommend but is one of my favorites musical pieces so I was happy to see it offered as well. One afternoon when the family was out shopping, I played these DVD through my LaScalas and was floored. I played them again. The visual and aural impact together of that scale I had not experienced in over 30 years or so (No we do not get out much). Then it hit me. Here I was playing classical music to my kids and the huge scale and grandeur of a symphony orchestra they have never experienced. Prior to any listening we quickly discuss the composer and his life and time period of the composition. Sure, they can pick out most of the instruments, but they had never seen the size and complications a large orchestra setting gives and they have never felt, heard and seen the dynamics simultaneously. So, I see the DVDs as a major help in completing the classical music experience. So to answer your question... I am interested in performances that are considered excellent by those that know a lot about performances recorded on DVDs . They should be passionate, dynamic, well recorded and should be performances that can hold your interest. (Probably Opera is probably out of the question for now, although Carmina Burana held my interest. I have not played it for my kids to see what they think, maybe next Sunday). Some music that comes to mind... Performances of Brahms Symphonies, the Bach Brandenburg Concertos, Beethoven’s 6th Pastoral Symphony, Mendelssohn’s Symphony #4 "Italian", and Overtures are usually enjoyable, and large choral works would be fun. I hope this answers your question sufficiently and gives an idea of my desires. For now, I am not interested in theater acts that have orchestral music being played. I am only interested in the actual orchestral performances. LarryC, Thankyou very much for the time you spend on this and the knowledge you share with all of us. We all benefit.
  12. Based on the recommendation of Larry C in a past forum folder I purchased the Carmina Burana DVD. What a wonderful DVD. LarryC, thanks for recommending it. I am becoming a big fan of watching the orchestral performances. I also purchased at the same time the Sheherazade-An Oriental Night With The Berliner Philharmoniker - Janine Jansen - Neeme Jarvi.. It is also a great performance. Amazon ID# http://www.amazon.com/Sheherazade-Oriental-Night-Berliner-Philharmoniker/dp/B000PE0JJ8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1262306733&sr=1-2 LarryC or anyone else, can you recommend any other classical performance DVDs based on your actual viewing? I am presenty looking to buy "Berliner Philharmikor 125 years" 5 DVD set. Anybody viewed these? http://www.amazon.com/Berliner-Philharmoniker-Jubilee-Celebration-Philharmonic/dp/B000L42J4U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1262309056&sr=1-2 Thanks to all who respond.

  16. Greg, I think you should graciously bow out of this thread and threads like this. When a hobby becomes a competing business to produce a better product whether the patent has run out or not, then it is just not right to be mining the great minds of this forum so blatantly that could cause in effect harm to any Klipsch products or their selling potential. Your comments and your desire about your building a better Klipschorn may be true. But you are in essence advertising on the Forum about your business. And right now it appears one of your business avenues is to better the Klipschorn. By your comments on this forum, you may be helping to reduce sale of the Klipschorns while guiding prospective buyers to your website. I am not suggesting you cease your designing, building and selling a better mousetrap, I am only suggesting you take this thread to a non-competitors website (Audio Asylum as an example, there are others or have your own website). Being very facetious, maybe Klipsch can start a new category called "Competitors Corner" where competitors can expound on their opinions of their perceived Klipsch weaknesses and why they think their products sound better and are cheaper, etc.. (I know, what a smart a$$) Is what you are doing legal, sure it is. Forum rule under Advertising 2. Advertising All manufacturer's representatives and competing brand personnel must identify themselves as an employee of said company in each post on the forum. Only listing a website probably does not qualify. Greg, you may not fall into this category yet since your business presently is for upgrades and enhancements, many of which I have admired. Apparently you are within the forum guidelines until you produce your first "CUSTOM HORN LOADED SPEAKER". Then you'll have to make some changes. Good Luck with your company. This is my opinion.
  17. BE36, I had one replaced by Freeman Tuell last year. I can recommend them. They are in Dallas Texas. Long time family business. http://www.freemantuell.com/ Cost was about $120 for the JBL replacement diaphragm and $20 round trip for postage.
  18. Yes and Yes. Its a keeper. Thats great you have the woodworking skills. What bass drivers are you planning to use? And what upper horns are in your plans? Wrinkles
  19. At 15 fps (feet per second) you would get about 4 minutes with a 3600 foot 15 inch reel. I believe you mean 15 ips (inches per second). As per the cover of my maxel UD sound recocrding tape box A 3,600 foot reel like a maxell 35-180 reel you get 192 minutes-both directions at 7.5 inch per second So, this means you get 96 minutes per side of tape at 7.5 ips A 3,600 reel you would get 48 minutes at 15 ips. 20. Hey Brac, I almost posted this same question about a month ago. I have a buddy at work who is going get me into it. He will set up the hive(s) in the spring with sone Italien queens [][] . He will teach me how to take care of bees. We will split the honey. He provides all the materials for now. I am looking forward to it. For anyone else interested in it you can download for free the 1917 version by C.P.Dadant "First Lessons in Beekeeping". Very intereseting. Dang. I cannot find the webpage, but I found some other interesting ones. http://www.archive.org/details/dadantsystemofbe00dada or http://www.glenn-apiaries.com/honey_bee_beekeeping_news.html Search the internet. Tons of info.
  21. Kenratboy, Go over to Audio Asylum in the Vinyl section and do a search. This is a not a pushoff but , this has been covered fairly frequently and there are many ideas as to how to get a record clean. The best method will be what is easiest for you where it does not become too big of a chore and does a decent job. I'm not sure $50 is going to be enough though. http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/vinyl/bbs.html Wrinkles
  22. I don't know anything about those bins.... but I'll say that if you have a bottom end that can be crossed at 450/500, then the K402 will probably sound great with it. I've heard the K402 on the LaScala bottom, Jubilee bottom and the MWM bottom. It only gets better as you go up in size yet the top was the same in all of them! Go figure. They do indeed!
  23. DJK, Other than weight, size and rolloff was there anything else that made them a waste of time? Advantages to LaScala is that they go lower in hertz and with a K402 on top it is more at a ear level than sitting on top of a LaScala, Thanks, Wrinkles
