  1. I have the 105. If it was just a DAC for my music server it is worth what it cost. If it was just a CD/SACD player it would be worth every penny. The fact that it is both plus one of the best bluray players you can buy makes it a no brainer for me. As a source for 2 channel listening it is much better than the cheap players. As a movie player it is better but if that is all I did with it I would have spent less.
  2. I believe they do have Xcurve. It really does not bother me but I would be interested in knowing how to disable it and giving it a try.
  3. OK i get the whole timbre match thing, but I disagree with many in that I would rather buy the best speaker I can for a given spot and worry later about upgrading the rest. In the past I have lived happily with a center that does not exactly match my mains (or even no center) and it was not the end of the world. Surrounds are even less important to match. I would not trade my KPT surrounds for anything and they are not technically matches to my Khorn/Lascalla front stage. My advice (and this comes from someone that spent way to much on small upgrades over the years) is to decide what you want your system to be in the end, and buy it one piece at a time if that is all you can afford. Do not spend another penny on something that is not the end result you wish to achieve.
  4. In the original post a motorized sled is mentioned. You do need to slide the lens out of the way to watch the narrower ratios. The big issue with the lenses is the need for a curved screen to eliminate pincushion distortion which makes the image distorted when watching stuff with the lens shifted out of the way. Zooming works great for me and projectors will just be getting better at it in the future.
  5. How many drivers are in the heads? I am confused.
  6. If I'm reading the chart right the distortion curves are shifted up by +10dB. This would make the 2nd harmonic -18 dB referenced to the fundamental. I am very interested in this as I am about to purchase a pair of Eliptracs and 4592-mids. I thought they were well regarded but Deans comments have me worried as the cost is more than I want to spend if they are going to be a try and throw away thing. How do they compare measurement wise to K55s?
  7. No hardware. You will have to make your own mounts.
  8. I will post some pics of the connected Theater/Main 2 ch system later tonight or tomorrow.
  9. Are these decorators with grills added after the fact?

  11. I think that is a mistake. I looked up the specs of the current Grande Utopia and it goes 18hz-40,000hz +or- 3db. -6db at 14hz
  12. Having a Mcintosh C2500 with async USB input makes this a no brainer really.
  13. That won't work with a OPPO 103. Only the 105 has the USB D/A function. waaaaay off topic here, but the 103 has an hdmi in, which would theoretically work with the Mac's hdmi out. I must have misunderstood the topic, which was what would sound best when using a mac mini. A short google search will find many computer music server enthusiasts who believe HDMI out of an Apple sounds much worse than USB into a decent USB D/A converter. I should disclose that my mini is older and has no HDMI output. I have not compared. I have only read about this during the thousands of wasted hours spend reading since I set up my server many years ago.

  15. In my system music played from my mac mini sounds better than the same thing played from the OPPO player. The Mac uses Pure Music software and plays directly from RAM memory. Many others also report better results from a computer over a CD player used as a transport.
  16. Would you want to meet in reno or maybe battle mt.? They look perfect, are there flaws?

    Worst cut?

This is what I am dealing with right now. I had a cut off wheel on a 4 1/2" angle grinder kick back on me. It cut just into the bone. The hand surgeon reattached a nerve and an artery. He could not believe the tendon was not severed. The line strait up the finger is the surgeons work the cut across at the base of the digit is mine. I can't feel any thing in the finger now I hope it comes back. I make my living with my hands, I am worried.
  18. Mine don't buzz. What is wrong with them?
  19. I have had many subwoofers over the years. The most musical (and it is not even close) Is a JBL B460 clone. The sub uses a JBL 2245h 18" driver in a 8 cubic foot ported box. The plans can be found here http://www.lansingheritage.org/html/jbl/reference/technical/1983-subs.htm Greg Timbers is kind enough to give all the info that is needed to easily build one of the all time best music subwoofers. He even gives out schematics to clone the active crossover that will be needed. I am currently using one of these in my bar/gameroom with a pair of Forte iis. I have never heard better.
  20. I think you have me mixed up with the original poster. I was just making a suggestion. Maybe too much of a jump, but I actually have less invested in the corns than I would have in 4 used RS surrounds. (About $200) Also that type of surround would not be very good for music. They are designed to provide a diffuse sound field.
  21. Here is what I went with. Don't mind the mess I will clean it up next week .
  22. Computers usually come with HDMI buses nowadays - making them the least expensive alternative by far if you've got an HDMI cable. Your comment that you get much better results not using an HDMI digital bus to the internally clocked Onkyo DACs sounds more like some other issue: you cannot get higher quality than HDMI. Analog connections always sound worse, since there are always losses, distortion, and noise on analog connections. EDIT: BTW - I have heard issues of conversion from bitstream (native format - whatever that happens to be) to PCM - that is very audible. If you allow the Onkyo (or computer's digital output process upstream of the HDMI bus transfer) to covert to PCM before DAC output for higher-than-Redbook data rate, non-PCM digital streams, then you can have audible degradation, but it's not related to the HDMI bus or the DACs or "jitter". This is especially true for DST64 coming off a SACD. Chris My years of researching have led me to the opposite conclusion about HDMI. There must be a good reason almost all (maybe all for all I know) of the best converters use other methods. The only reason it is ever wanted is because SACD players will send the DSC stream over it. I avoid the Integra completely for anything but movies and the occasional 5.1 music. I realize that there are reasons other than just digital why the dedicated two channel part of my system sounds better. The OP has said it is not an option anyway. He needs a outboard D/A converter. I suggest async USB or firewire.
  23. Much higher levels of jitter over HDMI Not inside the Onkyo receiver - which has internal clocking. Jitter is an issue with S/PDIF only. I have heard this. I have also read things to the contrary. I own a Integra Pre/Pro and have used it as a D/A converter in the past. I have found much better results bypassing it completely for music with an analog preamp with HT bypass, and using outboard D/A converters. Currently my main system is using a Oppo 105 fed from a mini mac server. For the price it can't be beat. In The $99 price range I would be looking at the Schitt Modi and the Dragonfly.
