  1. VERY excited. I've been wanting to get my HT into a state of "i'm content for now" before my daughter got here, and this is that last piece. I had been looking at SVS, eD, and many other subs in the $1700 performance range, and after buying a new (old) house, having a daughter, new appliances, etc. it just wasn't going to be possible. Carl threw out the offer to build it for me, and after a quick value prop presentation I received a surprising amount of WAF. So for around 1/3rd the price and a little bit of extra space I'm able to get all of the performance I've been looking for, and then some. I'll eventually go with a pro amp with built in DSP or add a miniDSP. For money and time constraints I went with the oAudio amp - it's very capable and includes some high-pass filters that will let me hit the ground running without risk of overloading my driver. I'm a little concerned about placement, but I really don't have many options in the room so I'll just have to make it work it's best within the room constraints.
  2. OMG OMG OMG OMG... i can finally talk about this. i won't steal his thunder and post any of the other build pics i've been sent, but here's some additional information - the driver for this is a Dayton Audio RSS390HF-15 and the amp I chose was the Oaudio 500w plate amp, which I have mounted in my audio rack/closet for short power and interconnect cables. I'll be running thick gauge speaker wire to the enclosure. Due to it's size and my room, I'm pretty limited in placement, but I'm hoping that it's size and output will make that a relative non-issue. it should compliment the rest of my system (noted below) and since I don't have any nearby neighbors i'll be able to air it out regularly.
  3. it cannot be defined, due to generational gaps.
  4. Like Tom Petty a couple of years ago? Bill i said "kickass band" [6]
  5. i only mention them because they are one of the few bands out there that get me all giggly like a school girl. it's sad that most people don't know they've been making great albums since 2001. :/ It's very cool to see them getting their long overdue spotlight though. many other options could exist for the half time show, it would just be nice to see a short music set done with style and not all the useless flash and pomp given to has-been artists.
  6. why does it have to be some huge production? why can't they just throw a kickass band up there (cough, the black keys) for a 4 song mini concert?no drama, no censoring nightmares, no poor lip singing or mix-match of has been artists. it's sad when the kitten bowl half time show is more interesting to watch..
  7. this is the 21st century.. anything is possible. and i mean ANYTHING.
  8. no fancy monitor required. HDMI is built on the DVI spec, so all you need to do is buy a cable from monoprice that goes from HDMI to DVI and you're good to go. Just about any monitor built in the last decade should be able to hook up without issue. Everything else in your chain looked pretty straight forward. BTW, I'm doing this right now in the bedroom - directv box is connecting video to a 24" lcd monitor I had using the cable described above, with audio going to a logitech ipod speaker dock via line-in. Ghetto, but works until I figure out my future TV plans for the "theater".
  9. do you pay renter's insurance? see if your company will cover any of the losses. i'm screwed if someone ever nabs my bag, which is why it never leaves my sight in public: 15" MBP, iPad, sometimes my iPhone, Panasonic GF1 + lenses, Shure SE-425's, and miscellaneous other tech stuff like a ps3 controller, camera supplies, checkbook, spare car keys, notebooks... not to mention the bag itself. sigh, totally didn't realize how much $$ i carry on my back until now. :/
  10. ah, so you DO understand elite audio and were just testing us! wasn't trying to make you feel stupid, just didn't want you to miss out on any Audiogon caliber answers. I have my gear in a closet and have 3 different lengths run to LCR, with no issues whatsover, even over tiny 18AWG and 25 ft.
  11. your sonic mirroing of the temporal sine wave between each binding post will be off by around 1 petasecond per foot. UNLESS of course, these are platinum coated diamond copper wires, in which case the eletricity simply won't flow at all until they are in a synchronous matched pair.
  12. kind of like the dual axle 16ft trailer that is "mine" which my buddy can't bear to sell, but is tired of lending out and having broken by other people. those are my favorite kind of deals. All the usage and none of the capex.
  13. i don't heat with wood, but I burn a lot of it in my outdoor fire pit for pleasure. I'm fortunate to have a bunch of cedar and a little bit of fruit wood on my property and also drive around town with my trailer after storms and such to pick up fallen old growth. I just looked on my local craigslist (north texas) and don't really see any full cord of wood going for less than $150.
  14. here's the thread i'm referencing. At one point the person asking called Klipsch who stated that the KV-4 might be a better fit, in spite of their marketing. http://community.klipsch.com/forums/p/111604/1122598.aspx
  15. welcome to the party Jim, even if it's a year late. So far, all of the naysayers have been proven completely wrong about the deal and its impact. Go figure..
  16. does it go into screen save mode when playing? I have pandora on my oppo bdp-93 and my only complaint on its implementation is the lack of screen saver - which gets annoying on my plasma after extended use if I forget to turn the screen off.
  17. i just did a quick search to see what others have recommended in the past and the KV-4 comes up as an upgrade/alternative to the KV-3 for use with the 5.5's. Dunno if/when you'll find one though..
  18. the kv-3 is the "designated" center for those mains, in that it is voiced to work with those 5.5's of yours. The RC-7 is meant to be with the RF-5/RF-7s. While I have no doubt the RC-7 will keep up with your mains and even out perform your KV-3, it may sound out of place.
  19. Micheal I will have the hdmi cable and with your help I may learn something. Pony Express is coming in on Wednesday and I will have the goodies for you to take to Carl. Thanks for your help in advance ! sounds like a plan. PM me your address when you get a chance so I can GPS my way to your house. you'll have to come out to my place in the future and check out what I'm bringing back from Carl's
  20. get your cables together and we can play around with all this stuff next weekend. like i said earlier, wife is having a baby shower, so you'll likely have to kick me out since i'll have nothing but free time.
  21. hdmi cables are pretty cheap from monoprice.com. I'd say get one and do an A/B comparison to see with cable method gives YOU the best picture. If the audio is fine, I'd suggest leaving it be.
  22. yes and no.. in your case it's strictly a video transport, so go with what looks better. in mine, the hdmi transmits both HD audio and the video - the only other way to get that audio bitstreamed to my denon is by using 7.1 analog cables and then I'm still forced to use something for the video, so it's an issue of 9 cables vs. 1
  23. i hate just passing you off to a link, but bluejeans cable has a nice write up on this very topic. http://www.bluejeanscable.com/articles/dvihdmicomponent.htm
