  1. Ever fly in the back seat of an MD-88? The full body sonic barrage of that pair of JT8 grinding away at full tilt just a few feet from your face....for a couple of hours straight. I'd safely wager that it's often quite easy for things to be too loud....even for the enthusiast.
  2. Those 4/7 post shakers are fun to watch because they're visually stimulating, but the real magic happens on a K&C rig. https://www.mts.com/ucm/groups/public/documents/library/dev_002222.pdf
  3. Well said Carl. I'd go so far as to say "exceptionally" hard.....as in consuming the overwhelming majority of performance research. Making a noisy, harsh riding vehicle (or any machine for that matter) takes almost no thought at all.
  4. Good? That depends. About an equal number of pros and cons. Necessary? No, but it is an alternative approach to controlling directivity, albeit a rather expensive one.
  5. If you're going to stack them four units tall, try them on their sides instead. That way, at least the mid horns will couple.
  6. Point source? To a certain degree, yes. But then question arises, does it have to a point source? That's debateable as there's a myriad of other acoustic factors at play along side their respective work-arounds. I wouldn't knock the Heritage line too bad until you've had an honest go at bi or tri-amping a pair using an appropriate DSP. The stock networks have provisions for doing just that. I've heard/experienced similar (ie. excellent) spatial performance out many other well-executed designs other than just Danley. Most notabably was an older NEXO Alpha rig.
  7. No argument from me on the definition of a microsecond. What I was trying to say, kindly, was that your delay measurement is off. 60μs is only 0.8 inches, which is not enough.
  8. I hope you meant "milli" seconds... Otherwise we'd be backing up the tweeter into the adjacent property. MCACC consistently measured my La Scala at 1.5 ms (~51.4 cm) between the K77 and K55M across the front three.
  9. It's premium priced only because the manufacturers would cannibalize their own market if sold at lower margins. There's really nothing new at play with OLED. I've been waiting in the weeds 17 years for OLED to hit the consumer TV market. Read the white papers back in '98 when Pioneer, Sony, and Ritek were chattering back and forth about how to bring it to market (right about when everyone was going cuckoo for LCD). Saw my first full color LED Jumbotron shortly after, and knew it'd be worth the wait. Saw the Galaxy cell phones when they arrived, and my suspicions were quickly reaffirmed. It'll be fun. Worth the wait. but... OLED's potential will only be limited by the GPU hardware and (god forbid) software employed to drive the displays. As Mike pointed out, there's striking similarities between audio and video technologies, and current digital video is essentially one-big FIR filter....unfortunately, things aren't getting faster. Especially with talks of expanding color gamuts in the near future. That poses a major problem when it comes time to interact with any source content, which is a primary function of video outside of home theater or static displays.
  10. 4K on the big screen (ie. cinema) is a welcome addition if not down right breath-taking, and does wonders for 3D respectively. In the home however? I draw the line at 1080p for any residential screen size I'd ever attempt.
  11. FWIW - My La Scala are now time-aligned. Using MCACC Pro I can quickly A/B between the original and adjusted signal. Suffice to say, I will not be going back. In ten years of ownership, hands-down it's the best they've ever sounded. Agreed. P.S. - So does Frazier, Danley, Vandersteen...and most planar/ribbon owners.
  12. 1/8" Hardboard, filament tape, and stretch wrap (starting at the bottom). Make corner protectors by stacking layers of cardboard then creasing them along their entire length. Should look something like this when you're done:
  13. Hers: '04 Saturn Ion 195K His: '92 Honda Accord 248K
  14. Got my wish. This sound level calibrator completes my acoustic measurement/test rig. Fits the Dayton EMM-6 and Radio Shack SPL meter microphones perfectly.
  15. You mean this? Measuring at 40 Hz vs 20 Hz doesn't matter. The data is differential. Same driver. The really important thing is "they" sampled above, through, and below the intended passbands. That post was in regards to distortion, not extension. "Horn fan"?? Take a good look around.
  16. Stopping by to dry out my clothes. The subwoofer section is flooded knee-deep in kool-aid once again.
  17. No. There's a difference there. Don't confuse the two. Soap Opera Effect is not from improved pixel response time or reduced image latency. Rather, it's from either a change in source frame rate, or a distortion of the source frame rate using an interpolation filter (motion enhancement). IOW - Even at maximum frame rate, a moving picture can still suffer ghosting or image persistence. The problem is in the screen itself, not the signal.
  18. This. No need to rewind the clock 15 years, even though LCD is in it's prime. Screen resolution isn't everything. Amongst other metrics, OLED smokes everything in response time, even CRT. Just like transient response in horn speakers, it's the first major difference your eyes experience....the complete absence of any ghosting or motion blur while tracking an object across the screen, regardless of the object's speed. Some "light" reading on the topic: http://www.displaymate.com/LCD_Response_Time_ShootOut.htm http://www.displaymate.com/LG_OLED_TV_ShootOut_1.htm http://www.blurbusters.com/faq/oled-motion-blur http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/response_time.php
  19. +2 Talk to the Chief about them. He and Jesse were quite eager to talk about their development at the last gathering. In spades.
  20. No surprise there....they were one of the first major online music databases, and they did it right. Discog's quickly attracted a diversified seller/distribution base, and has been a great source for whatever tangible media over the years. :emotion-21:
