  1. The muddy bass is probably the quality of the recording. A five string bass only goes on down to a B. Try some Flecktones and see if the bass is clearer. Marvel
  2. Since I am east of the Mississippi, and don't get to the west coast, for those who like live jazz, should check out Dizzy's in San Diego. An old friend, Chuck Perrin runs the place. No booze, no meals, just a jazz and whatever club. Hosts all kinds of music. I've got a Gary Scott CD he produced, Billy Thompson CD (nice tele licks). Art Johnson, jazz guitar. Marvel almost forgot: http://dizzyssandiego.com/
  3. This is the part # from Eminence, the makers of the speaker. It would be hard to find other speakers with an Xmax like this. Marvel
  4. Malcom, I have made many mistakes over the years, but one of them was selling my D28 to a friend of mine in the early '70s. I think it was built in '65. He now has a collection of about 10 or so. Including a '27 archtop Martin. His kids aren't interested at all, and he was considering letting me keep the D28 for him, so it would get played and cared for. He also has a D45 of newer vintage, and a couple of the D728 models (really neat 7/8 size D28). Right now all I have is a '40s era Gibson lap steel, '74 Guild F30R (Indian rosewood) and my '91 Taylor 812C, also Indian rosewood. It is the one in the avatar. I've owned other Martins in the past. My brother in law now owns my '51 D18. Sweet guitar. Had a 0018 as well. The Taylor is the only small bodied guitar I have found that can compete with the Dreadnought size. It gets you maybe 80-90 percent of the way there without the size. There are lots of great luthiers in the US right now, but the prices are though the roof. Marvel
  5. djk, Many thanks. This shows your age you know? My older brother (mid 50s) also thought it was milli micro, but without thinking too much about it thought it was pico. I can now get my order placed. Marvel
  6. Ray, The question comes up all the time. Maybe you did post it before I think we want bass that isn't really there in live music. An acoustic bass really doesn't have the size to reproduce the frequencies it is meant to play either. Is the note still there? Sure, but a real acoustic bass won't slam the gut. We seem to want it to feel like we are inside the bass. Perhaps a little more on the LS would be nice, but given the option to have a pair without a sub or no LS at all, I know what I would pick. Marvel
  7. While replacing caps in an old tube amp, I have a couple that are 390mmF. I know that milli micro is a term that is no longer used. Is it the same as pF (picoFarad)? Thanks in advance! Marvel
  8. Malcom, Brazilian rosewood ups the price tremendously. In the acoustic guitar arena, it will add aprox. $2000 to the price of a guitar. Most rosewood used now comes from India. It is grown as a windbreak on tea plantations, and is under a regular rotation for harvest. There are other woods similiar to rosewood (color and grain, and for guitars, similar tone), that are also not as expensive as Brazilian rosewood. Brazil is (believe it or not) being a bit more careful about what gets cut down now. It is still considered the best. Marvel
  9. My guess is anywhere between $500 and $1500. What kind of finish do they have? The raw birch would obviously go for less than a walnut veneer. Marvel
  10. And I was thinking Sonic Foundry Vegas Video! Never been there. Never really want to go. Sorry I can't help. Marvel
  11. Since I don't have much moola, having one ST70 in hand is better than me trying to sell it and get something else. I've done that with guitars over the years and wish I still had what I sold. Hopefully, I'll have my ST70 up and running before too long. It is a sweet sound. Sunnysal, I'll be very nosey and ask what price range your PP 2A3 was. All those interstage transformers instead of caps. Wow! Marvel
  12. It could still be a mono amp, with connections for two speakers (which you would probably want for a p.a., at the minimum. Marvel
  13. DougD, For all the grief that MS gets, they really are working hard to get high quality encoding out there. I have done some wmv files that look really good. You just can't play them on a Mac yet (I don't think). The wma format is very good also. I have set up some batch files that handle all the settings for source and output files, and once you get it set up is very easy. Marvel
  14. I thought it might be the dual layer thing, like DVDs have. This is a Sony disc, circa 1999. I was just delighted to know I had one. Does this mean I have an excuse to get an SACD player? Marvel the bar and chain are still in the tree. a project for tommorrow.
  15. I have an SACD question for you. I put on a cd of Yo Yo Ma Solo this afternoon (after taking a break from trying to retrieve my chainsaw from a tree) and noticed it is an SACD. I had never noticed it before (the wife picked up the cd). It plays in our 12 year old JVC cheap cd player. All 64 minutes of it. I didn't think they would play in standard cd players. Marvel
  16. Congrats on the anniversary! My wife and I made 31 years on the 14th. We took a slight detour after the first five years and got divorced. We remarried within the year. It has only gotten better every year since. Obviously a long story there, but the short one is that God is good, very good. Marvel
  17. Dean, I think the issue is the spike from the audio card hitting the amp (and then speakers), not that they are on the same circuit. If the PC/soundcard powered off cleanly, this probably wouldn't be an issue. Turning the audio system down first should take care of it. Marvel
  18. I think NOSValves used the Curcio upgrade board on that, which, from the Curcio web site: "Accepts 6922, 6DJ8, 7308, 6FQ7/6CG7, and 6N1P." The 7199 tube is from the original design, which is what mine still uses (at the moment). I just haven't gotten around to doing an upgrade on mine yet. It needs to be totally gone over before I fire it up again. Mine isn't one of the originals though. The circuit board is glass epoxy and not the paper/phenolic like the first ones. The transformer leads are also not cloth covered. Marvel
  19. I believe by posting a link to kazaa he is saying I could get free software anytime. I prefer the software I use to be legal. I do have the advantage of being able to get edu prices. Some companies, like Adobe, allow you to get the educational price and still use it to make money. You just need to fulfill the purchasing requirements. After all, the more you use it, the more likely you are to continue to use it and buy upgrades. Marvel
  20. I wish it was a set of Klipsch, but alas, it is not. I participate in the Digital Media Net forums, and just won a copy of Canopus ProCoder (msrp $699). It is used to transcode from one video format to another. Lots of very coold features. I was just contacted by a Canopus rep, and was told it would arrive within the next couple of weeks. It will go well with my other video editing software. Marvel
  21. Having seen John's trim on his LS cabs in person, I can say it looks super. He had a shop do the work, and as I recall, a cherry finish on them. They are beautiful! Still wish I had bought the second pair of LS cabs (not finished), but I didn't have the money at the time. I hope his brother is enjoying them. Perhaps I can have first dibs if he decides to sell (hint). Marvel
  22. Jim, At least the woofer is protected behind the plywood on an LS. Not so on the Cornwall, with only the grill cloth to protect it. Probably split a head pretty easily if one of the kids would fall into your LS. Back when I was a we tyke I fell into a kitchen cabinet. Just hit the flat surface of a door and split my head open. I haven't been the same since. I do think they must look insanely huge with all that grill cloth. Marvel
  23. I specifically asked Craig about tubes out or in when bringing up the power on a variac. He told me to have all tubes in. Worked okay too. Marvel
  24. The only problem is the cost of projection lamps. Most of them are $300-$500 to replace the bulb (comes as an assembly). There are people working on using white LEDs for the lamp, which are much cooler, and could be run with no fan. These aren't as bright yet. But keeping the size of the projected image a little smaller helps. Marvel
  25. Here in North Georgia things have been interesting. Last night we discovered that an oak in our from yard is leaning about 20 degrees from vertical. Fortunately away from the house, but over the road and power lines. It is well over 100 feet tall, and I hate to see it go. The trunk has a split at the base, about a hand width wide going ten feet up. There has been almost no wind today, but we are supposed to have storms again tonight. The utility company has it on their list and will get to it soon (I hope). Our neighbor had a tree come down and poke through his roof. Marvel
