  1. When using physical raid arrays, there is application software that installs into the OS so you can view or modify the array. At least... the raid cards I used provided the drivers and application software for Windows some 17 years ago. Why use Windows 10 on the Pi. Actually THAT is old tech now. Three or four years ago the Pi was something else, Linux, Websphere, and you had a mobile server you could take anywhere or actually use it to move itself. Now you can buy far more powerful cards or miniature servers.
  2. Dave's argument is largely the quite antiquated Minix vs Linux argument. A fully integrated (ie monolithic) architecture is NOT the best solution or approach and was even recognized by Linus. The proper architecture is component based and a kernel that does very little. Microsoft developed an OS under the appropriate approach - the problem is entirely in implementation and no one yet has figured out how to implement it well. Which is why Linux has catapulted to the forefront despite being a flawed architectural approach: lesser architecture design implemented well beats out good architecture implemented badly. Jeff's argument - not said well, I guess - is that a closed architecture has so many dependencies that it responds quite slowly to technological progress. Design decisions are made that cripple its ability to be flexible and respond rapidly to change. While Dave likes that a closed system solves one problem, it introduces so many as to be unsustainable. I worked with Apple back in the 80's. I hated it despite programming on it. People tend to think MacOS is still closed, and it does have a great many dependencies on hardware but pretty much any intel based system can run it today with minor difficulty. Edit a few firmware settings here and there (interestingly doing so requires you have a Linux system) and your regular old hardware becomes a Mac. Same for Linux. Pray tell, where is Minix... or Atari? Perhaps Dave remembers that Atari had to have its own version of Basic because the Atari couldn't just use regular old Basic. I can't contribute to discussions on the Amiga - it had its pro's but I always thought it sucked. Fortran was cool back in the day but I much prefer to code in Swift or use any of a dozen other programming or scripting languages. Regardless of the value propositions of MS vs. Apple vs. Linux - Google, Facebook, and Twitter are still evil and their proponents mere simpletons who rush forward into servitude.
  3. Run Linux server and two other machines at home. However, useless for productivity. Useful for web, audio, and such. Dave So are those dirt-cheap android tablets. Yes they are. If you subscribe to an ecosystem that was designed to be chaotic, inherently insecure, and absent responsible oversight, that's what you want. Anyone with a passing clue would avoid them just like they skip phishing emails.
  4. Right, get Linux and be done with it. Nope to you Mallette; there is no single decent OS nor will there ever be. With regards to Duder, you can't write native IOS/OSX apps on Linux can you. I suppose you guys think a hammer is always the correct tool.
  5. Google, Facebook, and Twitter are evil and should be legislated out of existence. In contrast, Windows just sucks before XP and after 7. 10 sucks as well and this Office in the Cloud stuff is pure nonsense. Of course, I remember when Apple sucked and now OSX is pretty good. Linux sucked for many years and now is largely the king for servers and more than an acceptable client platform. Its role will become even more pronounced given some of the technologies now applicable. I spend my days on all three main OS's. MacOS is pretty and useful for when I need Xcode and a variety of other tools, Linux is my workstation for CI/CD and hosting a plethora of application servers, and Windows is my basic communication platform and hosts a number of Windows only servers and VM's.
  6. In my particular case this was accomplished by plugging all of the components into the SAME OUTLET. Again, using different outlets all on the same circuit did not get rid of the ground loop hum. i would examine the wiring connecting the various devices on that circuit; of course, I have no hesitation in opening a wall to examine the root cause of a problem.
  7. I had a couple issues in my home with hum or buzzing in a couple of different rooms. Various attempts had not resolved it. I was remodeling the house and needed to do some rewiring. That led me to the discovery of four issues: (1) Many grounds leading from the main panel connect to a copper water pipe, which is useless when the copper pipe leaves the house connected to pvc - do yourself a favor, verify you have copper pipe throughout or install a proper grounding system via rods driven into the earth; (2) a circuit was in place that had been clipped off and was no longer connected to anything other than air, unfortunately, it also had a retainer clip nail driven into it that was binding it to a live wire; (3) discovered another circuit was also compromised (nail through the wall pierced through it) and bound to the 2x4 studs; and (4) most outlets had been wired poorly by simply inserting the wire into the retaining clips (permitting them to move slightly or come lose altogether) rather then attaching them via the screw. All grounding and noise issues have been resolved; in the one room it was entirely due to compromised circuit (I replaced the wiring), and in the other is was due to loose connections on the outlets due to the use of "insert wire here if you shouldn't be doing electrical work' wiring.
  8. More info on the blue car shell sitting on the deck?
  9. This thread was rather self-centered was it not? I am not going to engage in narcissistic posts because I am better than those who do. The proverbial pot calling the kettle black if you will. I will say you are correct about one thing - social media is evil. If you Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or whatever the other "give me fame and instant gratification" nonsense is out there, well, Darwin should win. Forums are a bit different; generally, people look to engage. Facebook, twitter.... Kim Kardasian just wants you to like her fat fake butt and "like" or "friend" it. I, myself, given the opportunity, would choose to meet a few folks on the Klipsch forum over the chance to see Kim flail around.
  10. I have a Klipsch KSP 5 speaker system for sale (potentially). It is comprised of 2 Klipsch KSP 400's, the C6, and the 2 S6's. The boards in the 400's have been upgraded with new caps to (1) remove any hum or buzzing, and (2) improve the sound. The system is great and the sound is fantastic. Why am I selling? The wife is a hater; she thinks the speakers are too big and take up too much space (never mind the arguments we have had over the Khorns but they aren't going anywhere although I offered to replace them with Jubilee's) despite acknowledging the system sounds incredible. On top of that, we just installed new hardwood floors and she insists these speakers can't obscure the view. Whatever. The speakers are in A-1 condition functionally. They are old so there are some issues cosmetically - the black wrap (tape, facia, vinyl) is starting to peel and needs to be re-glued. Aside from that minor issue, they are beautiful. Make me a reasonable offer. I, as well as the speakers, are in Kentucky. Pick-up preferred as shipping these beasts sucks - both logistically and financially. I won't give them away but Klipsch forum members can negotiate a lower price. If I don't feel the offer is reasonable, I won't be offended, but the speakers will go in the basement and my wife will simply have to pay for me to construct a dedicated home theater. There are plenty of people who have heard this system or own several of these systems so I will skip the sales chatter about how great, how awesome, etc. I will just say I have them tri-wired and the wife is going to be out big money to best their performance.
  11. Better yet, install VirtualBox on Linux and you can run Windows on Linux and use both of them at the same time if you choose. Some days you need Linux, others Windows, and, of course, there are the days you need a Mac; all have their strengths and weaknesses. Then you can get crazy and use your virtual machines to run alternate operating systems that I suppose most have never heard of before: Haiku, ReactOS, MenuetOS, or Aros (for the Amiga fans.) There are others as well.
  12. For wireless, simply open up driver manager. It doesn't automatically install the driver for Broadcom chipsets (which is widely used). The driver is in the kernel. Once opened, you should be able to select the first radio button, click apply. You can then click on the icon showing you no networks, select your wireless network and done. Takes less than 30 seconds. Personally, I drop the ISO onto a USB drive and skip the whole burning process: this lets you sample each of the desktops in short order and decide which you like best. Once decided, click install on the desktop and you are done. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
  13. Mint. Period. I prefer the Xfce version myself.
  14. Awesome! Just when I thought I needed to spend some money on refreshing my '81 crossovers, Dr. Who saves me a mint. I thought everything sounded just fine and now I know it does.
  15. Its easier than that. The threads will point you to the problematic caps; you can choose to replace just them, or for pretty much the time you invest in pulling the boards and a few dollars, you can install all new caps. Once and done. My KSP's never sounded better. An added bonus: The schematics may not be correct for your "specific" speaker and you may find jumper wires etc. that the schematics don't account for. Pulling the boards is the simplest solution to getting it right (and ordering the right parts.)
  16. Since everyone is throwing choices about, I have to give the nod to the Consonance. Great reviews, great build quality, and beautiful amp. http://opera-consonance.com/products/m100plus.htm It sounds great with anything from Jewel to Metallica.
  17. I've been in love Jewel for a long time!! I'm not crazy about her newer stuff, but her early material is great (IMHO), and her "The Essential Live Songbook" Blu-Ray is heavenly (for the ears and eyes)... I agree. This Way is my favorite album from a female artist period; it was masterful and she was simply breathtaking.
  18. Geoff Tate (Queensyrche) Jewel Black Sabbath (Ozzy)
  19. Going to check my calendar. 680 miles. Several people there I haven't met before; might be nice.
  20. $400. Bad amps. Wrong center channel and surrounds. Sound sucked. Exactly what I would have expected. To kill two birds with one stone: I bought mine used for $900 (so I remember) and bought the matching surrounds and center channel new for more than that. The sound is impressive enough that I never considered the reference series, KLF's, or anything else after auditioning them. For a mixed purpose system they can't be beat; for a dedicated two channel system, yes, I would stick with Khorns.
  21. $700 is a good price. Shipping is what kills you. Some on this board are very cheap. I see them routinely for upwards of $900. As someone who has refurbed the amps, you can rebuild them completely for less than $50 or so if you know how to use a soldering iron. Biamp them and you have fantastic sound. You can also easily acquire the matching surrounds and center channel. I won't let mine go and frequently look to add more to the mix. I prefer them to the reference series myself and think the S6's were amongst the best surrounds Klipsch made.
  22. I would grab a set of mint Heresy II's before I dropped the cash on a set of new Heresy III's. I like the savings and you could always tinker with them later if you felt compelled.
  23. I agree. I spit out my coffee when I read the initial offer. It isn't a roadshow; it is a refund offer. For $600 or slightly more, I can buy a number of amps that I don't need to 'try' and I don't have unecessary complications. Offeror should rethink this promotion, or not.
  24. 1. They never got back together. 2. John's best music (God, Mother, Working Class Hero, etc.) came afterwards. 3. We had to listen to Paul's Wing's nonsense because the band couldn't temper his pop.
  25. The question wasn't greatest songs... it was greatest song "titles." As such: 1. After Forever, Black Sabbath. 2. Suicide Solution, Ozzy Osbourne. 3. Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd. (Also being one of the greatest songs ever.) There is a theme in what makes them great song titles; anyone see it? Of course, I also just named 3 of the best bands ever.
