My system is pretty mixed up and sounds really good. I think the timbre mismatch can be overcome just by playing with the xover settings on your receiver. I had the most mid level problem when I added my RF-25's, they were very over powering in the mid range level.

I have thought of using my RS's as Mains or front surrounds but have been skeptical of the outcome.

Welcome to the forum. That should be a great receiver. I am currently using the TX-NR626 and am very happy with the performance & video quality of it. I am sure you have a lot more power and features to play with on the 828. As far as the HDMI issues go, the newer Onkyo lines seem to be a bit more stable but I am keeping my fingers crossed.

The RF-52's should blend nicely. The newer reference RP-250's might overshadow the rest of the system. Probably could play with the speaker configuration for them on your receiver to help with blending.

Does anyone know if the RCW-3 woofers are dual voice coil. Looking at the backside of the woofers they have 2 sets of terminals. Got a buddy that wants to separate the speakers and run them like a component set up.
