  1. Most of the responses on this topic are cracking me up! ...there was a thread just this week on CAM (CanuckAudioMart) asking if anyone else had any issues with their significant others allowing their audio systems in the living room, it brought back fond memories of all my exes.
  2. @tigerwoodKhornsis bang on with his mod in my books, aka IMHO. This is one of the Chorus 2 crossovers I bought to play around with in some Cornwall cabinets. Same idea, I put them on breadboards to keep them safe, yet convenient to work and play with with. For the sake of discussion, all of the fasteners are stainless steel or brass. To secure the printed circuit board but keep it from being tightened down flat to the wood and possibly buckling and cracking I put nylon washers (spacers) between circuit board and the breadboard. I did recap them too, but with cheap ones, and heard zero difference in the sound versus before and after. As suggested, go for the good caps, and leave the leads long so you don’t heat up the capacitors making connections.
  3. ...I STILL don’t know what “a poll” would entail? And I guess I never will.
  4. Pretty much, lol. Moved from the south east end of Lake Simcoe to the north west side. Second thing I did was buy a snowblower. It's only about an hour drive from the old digs, but mother nature gives no quarter up here. My youngest son was starting his first year of highschool up here so I found a house one street away from it. He lost his mind when I showed him the new place.
  5. From the book of Klipsch, the gospel of Claude, I too am of the belief that the MWM was originally engineered using the K-33.
  6. @HPower, Tom, you are welcome here anytime as well! I just checked my phone and I still have you in my contacts. I’m a little further up the road now in Barrie. These would have fit in my old house easily. Had a great conversation with Mike, twice, lol, when I picked up each bin. That guy did a lot of leg work to get these here. They were part of a package that came out a roller skating rink in Quebec. When he told me that I kinda glazed over in a flashback, lol. When I came too we were discussing ALK crossovers. Somewhere after we touched on tube amps my feet started to freeze and I knew it was time to hit the road. Over the years a lot of the rarer Klipsch seems to have come to me out of Kitchener. And Sudbury! As I “mature” though, the conversations are always the high point and the speakers are an added bonus(albeit a pretty good one). There is so much more sharing ( read “learning”, for me) that just flows in person. I ALMOST envy my kids still in highschool.
  7. I vote we form a committee and expense the entire process.
  8. ...that grinder has character and belongs in any garage I would LOVE to hear these outside when I accoutre the other bin! I have two buddies with some serious acres, and one has a tractor, so that may be the way to go. If they ever make it to the basement they are there for the next owner. I’ll have to do a mock-up with cardboard before I try and shoehorn them down the stairs. The bass really is quite phenomenal though, and Klipsch clean. You are front row at a concert with these. I would have never even considered half the speakers that have graced my humble abode over the years if it weren’t for this forum.
  9. I have K-43s. And Kappa 15Cs. Two pairs of each. And they’re spectacular in the shorter horns I have (LSIs and Peavey FH-1s). But I believe with every fibre of my being that the extra octave down low the square magnet K-33s bring to the table meets the road in these bins. And not subtly. For the same reasons I think the Crites woofers would excel here. For my immediate purposes I do not need the added power handling for which the K-43s were incorporated into the design, but it may be something to play around with and measure at some point.
  10. A while ago an unloaded pair of these came up locally (anything within two hours one way is local to me). I told the seller I’d take them, but after measuring the entry into my basement I had to back out of the deal. He was very understanding and that was that. Shortly afterwards all of the ads in the usual places were gone and I thought they had gone to a lucky buyer. Fast forward a couple weeks and I get a text saying he was going to try and make them work in his space but he was in the same boat as me, but if I still wanted them I was first in line. Well, lightning rarely strikes twice so I set up a date to meet fate. Even if they only ever make it to my garage I had to hear them in person. Who parks a car in a garage anyway? Over the holidays I managed to get ONE of the two bins loaded with a pair of square magnet K-33s. I pulled the tops off my LSI Splits with Crites AB-2 crossovers (same as AL-3 minus the tweeter protection) and DE-120s on SMAHLs. Dusted off a Technics SA-GX303 85 watt/side receiver and charged up an old iPod with a 1/8” to RCA cable feeding it. I turned everything to zero and powered on the iPod and receiver and slowly dialed some Black Sabbath up to about 9 o’clock. What a disappointment compared to my La Scalas. I was expecting them to blow the garage door off and it was moot. ...then I fiddled with the iPod connecting cable and the OTHER channel kicked in! With the loudness in and the bass full, at about 10:30 on the volume control I chickened out. Ozzy lives! Chest thumping drums and guitars, and the LSI tops kept up perfectly with the treble control flat. Maybe once I woofer up the second bin they will fall shy but I don’t think so, I’ll just dial the bass down to tilt the balance. Special thanks to@bluesman., if you’re ever headed north on the 400 my door will be open to you! The garage will be tight, but I’ll just put the snowblower in the driveway, lol!
  11. ...it only happens to me when the FBI is monitoring my activity, but it may be different for you?
  12. Holy Crap! Who was that member down there that just bought the Fortes...? Lol Wow. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for an astute buyer. I’m nauseous with envy for whomever lucks out on this one. Hopefully someone on here!
  13. Pioneer SX-2000 My dad brought this, and his *** back from Viet Nam.
  14. ...the plot thickens firstly, thanks, as always! so what does a 2nd generation schematic look like?
  15. Is this the correct schematic for an ALK UNIVERSAL or C.S.W. (CornScalaWall ) ?
  16. Regarding dented dust caps. Dust caps are way tougher than they look, lol. The only way I have ever been able to pop out the dents in any of the dozen or so I’ve encountered is with a thin pin bent at a right angle inserted as close to the centre of the dent as possible and pulled out slowly with a pair of needle nose pliers. Depending on the size of the dent(s) you may want different lengths of the bend. Go slow. And rotate the bent pin 180 degrees under the dent if it doesn’t come up right away. Not sure who first posted this but I owe them a beer.

    Jokes?

...if I am out of coffee cream I just call in a personal day, there is no way I am leaving the house for work before having a coffee
  18. Hi @Nuttzy1, and welcome to the forum. Everything you can do to them will change the sound. Whether that is good, bad, or indifferent only you can decide. And everything you change brings you further into the world of diminishing returns, if and when, you want to sell them. Most buyers are looking for a 40 year old virgin, lol. Having said all that, if your mods are reversible you can always part out the good stuff after you restore your speakers to original. Maybe start a new post and watch how quickly it fills up with everyone’s experience and you will get a pretty good idea of the rabbit holes you can start down.
  19. Ok, I can relate to that. I always found the K-33 boomy. Even though it is now poo-pooed, I really liked the Kappa 15C in a Cornwall box. And as @jjptkd mentioned the K-48 is just a hands down killer. Something else comes into play with the boominess, how close your speakers are to the back wall. I can’t listen to anything closer than 2 feet from the back wall because of the boomy bass. And the imaging thing.
  20. @mopardave, do you have/have you ever tried a pair of the Crites woofers in your “Cornwall inspired speakers”? It was a long time coming waiting for a pair to appear on the used market up here (thanks @Islander) but they are a game changer in every speaker I put them in. Simply put, if you think the K-33 goes low, the Crites woofer goes instantly and noticeably lower in the same application. But there may be something else in this equation. Woofers love watts. That is another game changer in my limited experience. As an aside and not to detract from this sentiment, I was privy to the cast frame woofers and had to hog out the motorboard of my “Cornwall inspired speakers” with a rasp to drop the woofer in the same hole a K-33 slotted right into. I remember my son coming down at midnight to see what all the noise was... So as Claude mentioned, maybe for different reasons, the stamped frame may be a better idea for you. Having a quick look at the specs for the Kappa 3015LF, it looks to me like it does not go as low as you are looking for? Built more for speed than comfort, lol.
  21. I think you are correct, the K-500 was cast aluminum, the K-501 was resin?
  22. Dude! You live in Florida! You’re in business. Jubilees and Klispchorns fall of the back of trucks daily down there. (Writer’s embellishment) But seriously, GOOD deals happen often in the panhandle. You have been steered entirely in the right direction by the other posters. A three-way with a 15” woofer will make you smile every time you turn it on. Any Chorus would be top on my list. I was in pretty much the same boat as you a few years back after hearing Heresys for the first time and falling hard into the Klipsch rabbit hole. I ALMOST bought a pair of KG4s to start my journey but lucky for me they sold before I could make up my mind and a pair of Forte 2s came up so I pounced on them. I called them floor-standing headphones in my ad when a short time later I had the opportunity to grab a pair of Cornwalls. The Fortes were no match for the bigger sound of the 15” woofer. And just like another poster mentioned, they were free rent. They hold their value and quickly sold for what I had into them. If something catches your eye and you aren’t sure throw it out to the forum.
