  1. I am using some JBL 2404 tweeters in a test box like config preparing for a new speaker build. These are exceptionally nice sounding and seem clearer and higher than the K77. However, they will not fit in a heresy box. The motherboard of the Khorn can be modified to hold the speaker due to the fact it is separate from the bass bin. That said - I find no fault with the K77 and how it meshes with the other components in a heresy and would always use it in my system. 2 cents.
  2. Yo Craig - keep me in the loop if you get it. I may be interested after your refurb. While I find my Fisher still entertaining, past listening to Sheltie Daves Scott has always left me thinking that my next project may need to include a fun time with components.
  3. Darn fun read - i get a kick out of the 'just because I can' empirical approach. A couple of things - 1. I imagine that a side by side comparison with a two way with the lower freq being a front loaded horn the delay would be much more obvious on the single driver system. 2. The 40 -50hz low end with reasonable SPL (equalizer necessary) is snickered at by the author as if to say 'all that work to just get to here'. Regardless, it is a wonderful result for what he has to work with. I find it a pretty amazing feat - especially since I rag on Lowther (and all the full rangers) for their respective claims of quality bass. 3. They are pretty darn attractive for 'amateur' woodworkers. They should be proud. My ear does not like the compromises of single driver systems and it seems that his own review of the results tells me I would think the same here. Regardless, it is a piece of art and may well get the best results one could with that driver. Bravo to the architects and construction crew.
  4. Don't let this get out - the next thing you know Klipsch will have to put warning labels on their gear along the lines of 'addictive and habit forming' much like the gambling industry. There will be an 800 number to call for help and a twelve step program for those that recognize they have a problem. We have already had to participate in two interventions. Please don't let it happen to your children.... My wife is a proud member of MAKO - Mothers against Klipsch Owners.
  5. I agree with the others. The older JBL is a very comparable sound to many in the Klipsch line and your ear may say that there are certain advantages in various model side by side comparison to Klipsch. There is a very large number of reliable repair folks for their drivers, surrounds, lens, etc. They are admirable performers and I lean toward their older professional stuff.
  6. I get a bit nostalgic on this one. For several years I sang this song to my daughter - I believe it was from about 2yr. - 10yr. - most often at bedtime. She still remembers if fondly (as do I) regardless of how bad I sing Little Miss Magic J Buffet Constantly amazed by the blades of the fan on the ceiling<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /> The clever little glances she gives me cant help but be appealing She loves to ride in to town with the top down Feel that warm breeze on her gentle skin She is my next of kin Chorus: I see a little more of me every day I catch a little more moustache turning gray Your mother is the only other woman for me Little Miss Magic, what you gonna be ? Sometimes I catch her dreamin' and wonder where that little mind meanders Is she strollin' along the shore or cruisin' oer the broad Savannah I know someday shell learn to make up her own rhymes Someday shes gonna learn how to dive Oh that I wont deny Chorus: I catch a little more dialogue coming my way I see those big brown eyes just start to lookin astray Your mothers still the only other woman for me Little Miss Magic, what you gonna be ? Yes she loves to ride in to town with the top down Feel that warm breeze on her gentle skin She is my next of kin Constantly amazed by the blades of the fan on the ceiling Those clever little looks she gives just cant help but be appealing I know someday shell learn to make up her own rhymes One day shes gonna learn how to fly That I wont deny Chorus: I see a little more of me every day I feel a little more moustache turning gray Your mothers still the only other woman for me Little Miss Magic, what you gonna be ? Little Miss Magic, what you gonna be ? Little Miss Magic, just cant wait to see Its raining, Its pouring Your old man is snoring

Good stats and planars still provide (to my ear) the very best of sound - as long as you plant your butt in a pretty strict sweet spot. It eventually was too much like having an oversized set of headphones - only one person at a time got to experience the nirvana...
  8. My second is not so much for the poetry of the lyrics but for the song as a whole - Stevie Nicks 'Landslide' w/Fleetwood Mac. I took my love and I took it down Climbed a mountain and turned around And I saw my reflection in the snow-covered hills 'til the landslide brought it down Oh, mirror in the sky -What is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changin'...ocean tides Can I handle the seasons of my life? I don't know.....I don't know Well I've been afraid of changin' because I've built my life around you But time makes you bolder, even children get older And I'm getting older too.... So, take my love...take it down Climb a mountain and turn around and if you see my reflection in the snow-covered hills... well the landslide will bring it down The landslide will bring it down
  9. Good thread Thebes -- My first thought for best lyrics (they mean bunches to me) is Behind Blue Eyes - The Who No one knows what it's like To be the bad man To be the sad man Behind blue eyes No one knows what it's like To be hated To be fated To telling only lies But my dreams They aren't as empty As my conscience seems to be I have hours, only lonely My love is vengeance That's never free No one knows what it's like To feel these feelings Like I do And I blame you No one bites back as hard On their anger None of my pain and woe Can show through But my dreams They aren't as empty As my conscience seems to be I have hours, only lonely My love is vengeance That's never free When my fist clenches, crack it open Before I use it and lose my cool When I smile, tell me some bad news Before I laugh and act like a fool If I swallow anything evil Put your finger down my throat If I shiver, please give me a blanket Keep me warm, let me wear your coat No one knows what it's like To be the bad man To be the sad man Behind blue eyes
  10. hello Max - I probably can't answer anything for you but I have a thought on the 192/24. If I get things correct, your last DAC used in the system chain has to have the 192/24 capability. For instance, with my system if I want 192/24 capability I would have to come off the analogue out of my transport/DAC - if I send the signal digitally (let's say Lpcm) to the amp DAC it is 'downsampled' (I may have made that word up, but it fits) to the highest capability of the DAC say 48 or 96khz. That said, there is probably a setup issue - regardless of sampling, your downstream DAC should be handling the signal. As to the MP3 sounding better on the DVD - I really can't say. Is it possible that in your setup the DAC solution for DVD is better than for CD? I say this because when I went to the DAC in my new CD player (granted the replaced player was very old) instead of the DAC in my amp I got a significant improvement in sound quality. The same wasn't true with my DVD arrangement. I have not had your experience with MP3 - quite the opposite, the sound quality is obviously different to the bad to my ear. Take all this at face value - i am just starting to get transport skinny to see what improvements I can make.

If that is not possible a Heresy is your next best choice. While the current Reference offerings from Klipsch are nice, the timbre will not match that of the Cornwall very well. You are on your way to an awesome setup! Welcome to the forum. ---------------- yep and welcome

Was I missing something? I still can change and Bob Crites is incenting me to make test boxes, but an Onken test box would require nearly as much work as a finished cabinet. That said - an Onken box can be made to look really pretty with all the opportunity for exposed wood...
  14. Nah - it is the bastard child of Albert Einstein and Samuel Clemens daughter who was married to John Saunders. Thus the mistake of Colonel Sanders, etc.
  15. I recommend your own suggestion - start with a sub. That will free you to see what you really think about the mids/highs - the woofers will be just fine augmented by a sub. As to price - my two farorites in your price range are Hsu and SVS - any of either's subs in your price range should work well.

I have the Valencia 846-U and it really puts the "theater" in HT. When powered with a SS amp, the bass is outstanding. The horns with a good tube amp is only as good as the source material. It is unreplaceable, IMO. I have heard Cornwalls and Khorns and think that my Valencias are as good as anything Klipsch has to offer. I only need a sisde by side comparison but it might come to a matter of taste. ---------------- Yep on the taste thing - I prefer the Heresy at its size more than any other (especially augmented by a sub). I have several Altec and JBL stuff that I prefer for the rest of the Klipsch line (not by much and sometimes just for certain music) until you get to the Khorns which remain my favorite for looks, sound and price (with a small aside to Bruce Edgar's stuff). When you get to this quality of sound it becomes a preference of coloration...
  17. I think that, as usual, Tom was succinct and matches my impressions to a 'T'.
  18. Bob - Great looking box and idea. Also, if this is a test box and will be used over several times you may want to consider inserting female threads in the box so you can reassemble often without worrying about the wood becoming chewed up and gettin a loose motherboard.
  19. Many audiophiles look down their nose oat the B&O stuff, but I am a big fan of the late seventies through late 80's stuff. My old Beogram keeps chugging and is very nice to the vinyl - they have excellent tracting capabilities. Cartidges are hard to come by for those years, but lots of reputable players to help out. I am a fan and suggest folks give a critical listen to them. Max - as to which model - I am not sure, but the Tx seems like a reasonable call.
  20. All my voices took a vote and decided I should be Boris. I am not sure I understand why....
  21. Simon and Garfunkel - no good reason, they just get on my nerves.
  22. Friend Michael - This will, one day, be one of your favorite stories to tell on yourself. Remember that you have such a good friend as Indy to record it for all time and be sure the lesson is shared with all
  23. Great description Max - You and Thebes should coordinate on a book, very interesting reads from each. Fini, been there, done that. It is one of those slow lesons in mortality that has a lasting impact. Hang in there.
