I was from U Waterloo, definitely NOT a Leafs fan, although Davey  Keon was special. I lived/ worked right on Atwater IIRC.

Havent been to Montreal in a while. Went to 3 F1 races there, great time.

  1.

I missed this thread way back so thought I’d drop a line on the original topic of Internet Radio... all my devices seem to support TuneIn radio. I listen to a lot around North America but need to branch out a bit,

    - CKUA this is a great station in Alberta... check out Mulligan Stew on Saturday nights 5 - 7

    - any station from Kauai

    - British BBC stations

    - and for @Full Range late nights with Alice Cooper who’s a great host

I try different styles of music too, no incremental cost to listen to something new/different... Reggae anyone?

I also have a lifetime subscription for Sirius so that can fill in some gaps too especially on driving to Vancouver Island... Margaritaville is channel 24!

@RandyH000, oh boy it’s been a while since I had a bradoor. I worked 2 co-op work terms in Montreal in 1974/5. A warm beer was cheaper than a cold pop at the corner store! My biggest mistake... I never went to a Canadiens game! I was just a starving student.

  2. @Islander, thanks. Calgary Kijiji has a SL-1400 MK2 and a SL-1500 MK3, $300 and $500 respectively... not sure of cartridges. I would need a phono preamp with volume control to go with these... will see what’s up.  Record Store Day is Saturday so maybe a new table on sale?

  3. @Bubo, I think you summarized it. But the dilemma still rages... in my budget range the DD varieties are pretty much all vintage. I may want an on board preamp and that points towards new models.  Rega, Pro-ject and Music Hall seem to cover a lot of the market but can get expensive fast. I really like the looks of the vintage Yamaha TT. I can wait for the right deal, so time will just mosey along.

  4. You are exactly right... I’ve been hunting for a preamp to match up to the power amp too. If I get a preamp, or a vintage amp with phono, then I go analog... the digital side of inputs is well covered already.

If the guy guy with the Yamaha YP-511 was a bit more forthright, I would buy it. But the chunk missing from the dust cover irks me! If it’s so easy to fix why hasn’t he done so?

  5. @Shakeydeal, I know it’s crazy talk to take the TT output to digital then back again, but I’m intrigued by the idea.  There’s a Carver C-1 preamp in Quebec that would be fun too, but seller won’t ship. I just don’t have a preamp other than Denon AVR or the Dacmagic, hence the A to D idea.  Plus, I’m 66 so double conversion will not likely affect what I hear?

  6. Thanks to all for the replies. Some more background for my dilemma...

I had a Dual CS-608 way back. But basically gave it away in our last house move. Sadly also gave away some amazing records I had.

Will be playing the TT into either a Denon AVR or ... here comes the crazy idea ... via Bluetooth to a DAC / preamp to my power amp ... onwards to 1980 Heresy.

Does anyone know if a USB out from TT and into USB on Dacmagic Plus will work? USB timing /  master question? That Dac/pre is setup on a Parasound A23 which I’d like to use with the Heresy.  Missed a chance to buy an Akai AM-2800 which would have been a good setup I think?

  7. After a 12-year hiatus, I am thinking of getting back into vinyl.  I’ve done some research and here’s my conclusion; note I am a value investor aka, broke but want the champagne life;

Vintage TT – wow. It seems every vintage TT is the best sounding TT ever made and absolutely beautiful.  Until, the full reveal and there’s a chunk missing or no hinges on the dust cover, if there is one, and most definitely no tone arm, cartridge and/or stylus.  But they sound wonderful!

How could I possibly verify this if there’s no way to get the sound from the groove to my ear?  Why would I pay $600, pick your currency, for a vintage table that is just back from the best tech in – insert your town, for minor updates to well most everything.

Example – a Yamaha YP-511 direct drive recently given a grade A refurb by the best tech in Calgary and sounds fantastic, looks amazing.  Massive chunk missing from dust cover “can be repaired easily”.  Asking $600.  Really?

New TT – double wow.  Ok, so now I don’t need a preamp, amp or wires.  Cool.  I can Bluetooth this puppy to my music server and serve the groovy music all over my house to my powered speakers of which I have none.  This seems both oh so wrong and yet oh so right.  The vinyl experience was intimate, wholesome, calming well depending on the tunes.  Now, I can digitize that puppy and send it to my Bose Bluetooth speaker while I’m in the shower.

As with the vintage TT, new TT may or may not come with what you need to even spin a record.  Certainly, don’t expect a cartridge for anything worth talking about as an “audiophile deck”.  OMG, I just want the dang music to come off that spinning disc that’s too big to go into my CD player.

Example – Elipson Omega Black Carbon, carbon fiber tone arm and plinth “top” layer, with an Ortofon cartridge, Bluetooth, USB, preamp and line out.  Sales guy tells me it’s a pretty simple TT and can be returned to him for any warranty work.  Asking $525.  Hmm?

Upshot – decision.  Well, I’m not happy with the vintage sellers.  They don’t seem to know really what they have, how many hours are on that stylus, when was the last maintenance and what was included etc.  And full disclosure seems to be reluctantly offered.  But equally the new deck sales guys really make me mad by insinuating that I’m a cheapskate for only wanting to fork over $525 bucks for a “simple” TT and to have the audacity to ask about warranty.

My decision is to buy new, but wait until something worthwhile is on DEEP discount.

I might use the Bluetooth approach just to freak myself out when there’s no cord attached to the back of the deck, other than the super expensive, uni-directional, ultra-pure super frozen rhodium/gold/silver power cable from Mars.

Your thoughts and experience with vinyl re-entry welcome.

  8. When I was working for a Joint Venture associated with a very large international company ... we used to have to do an annual cyber security training, attest, swear on bible to behave etc.  Then, said parent company would spend all year trying to infiltrate, coerce, fool, etc. people.  That simple hover over an email address and READ IT CAREFULLY could have saved a lot of people embarrassment as they were caught in the internal scam.  If you were caught twice, IIRC, you lost internet privileges for some period of time.

There are a lot of scams out there right now.  Also, just a thought ... use more than one email account.  Keep the family "business" to a very limited set of use.  Never give out anything over the internet.  If you buy/sell on electronic boards, e.g. Kijiji, Craigslist, FB ... use an email account you can blow away if you need to.  Don't mix family and hobby stuff if you can help it.

The email, internet and phone phishing attacks are getting pretty intense.  Just don't answer anything!

When I "really" retire, I will likely blow away my email from years and years of family life, and only send new email to immediate family.  The rest can try to call me.  Then again, I don't answer my phone.  Curmudgeon?  Maybe.

  9. @JRH my 1984's warranty card says 5 years.  I like the 1980 warranty card!  I will speak with the "boss" and see if there's any reason she wants me to keep the 1980's.  It would be fun to have all the documentation I received together in one place and perhaps for you to have it together with the pictures and story above?  If anyone asks, I'll just say Jim has it.  I'll get back to you via this thread but I don't see why we wouldn't.

  10. @JRH attached front side of warranty card, both for the two 1980 Heresy are the same.  Klipsch Lifetime!  Well, not for mine although I bet Klipsch doesn't have too many original owners who have the documentation I have and a set of speakers after (nearly) 40 years.

  11. @JRH I’ll try to get pick of warranty card reverse side. Since I’ve had my hands inside, replaced the E crossover with one I built, I doubt I’ll be making any warranty claims... Disco Sound Distributors are way long gone too!

  12. So, wife and I were cleaning out storage room and found the original documentation for the 1980 (and also my 1984) Heresy.  I was wrong.  I bought a Sony TA-F55 integrated amp, a STJ-55 AM/FM tuner and Koss headphones in summer 1980.  I bought the 1980 Heresy Jan. 30, 1981 for $1,057 Cdn.  They were distributed by Kuehne & Nagel distribution services to Disco Sound Distributors in Edmonton.  Wow... me at Disco Sound!  I've attached the warranty cards ... my handwriting but it says I have Lifetime warranty.  Um, maybe not. I also have the original brochure from Klipsch with intro by PWK, and page of information for each of Klipshorns, Heresy, La Scala, Belle and Cornwall speakers.  Fun to see these old documents, thanks again @HDBRbuilder and @JRH

  13. Posted ML speakers (Center and 2 towers) with Velodyne DD10 as package deal. No takers, although interest mostly in the sub. Re-posted just the center channel. 2 days later buddy replies he’s interested, can I demo?  Is it my best price?  Yes I can demo, check hifiShark... yes it’s my best price there aren’t any others for sale in Canada!

He comes for demo, pretty close to my age, very polite guy. The speaker is in near mint condition... I play TAPS from Corb Lund (great horn, range) and start IN MY LIFE by Sean Connery (amazing voice). Buddy starts waving his hands and head. I think, oh boy he’s gonna bolt. He stands up, starts peeling $50s from a wad, hands me my asking price. We spent the next hour going over the speaker, packing it up. He wants my other ML speakers but has to sell some stuff first.  Seemed keen on the Velodyne too. Finally a good sale!

I guess in this economy breaking things down to bite size might eventually sell the whole enchilada!

  14. Published a paper on analytical laboratory automation... based on work in 1980 - 1981 on Digital Equipment Corp. PDP11/34, macro/assembly and FORTRAN.  Very dry, and now replaced by apps on chips from cell phones!  If you understand any of that I know how old you are.

Thinking of writing a novel. Writing part comes to me. The ePub/editor/publisher seems daunting... @ssh thanks for Creative Penn reference, looks like it will help.
